Maintenance free chain.

Looks like BMW have come up with a maintenance free chain, which they've called M Endurance. It's being offered as a £100 option on S1000RR's and S1000XR's. Seems all clever stuff in conjunction with Regina by the look of it. Looks like a normal X ring but with an industrial diamond coating (ta-C). No lubing or adjusting. Scott oiler shares will be in a tailspin.

I had to check the date as well . Seems too good to be true, but if the coating doesn’t wear off coupled with the claimed lower friction coefficient, it certainly could be a revelation, as long as it comes in gold .

I've already found with a DID ZVM chain and a Scottoiler that there is no need to adjust the chain between tyre changes (about 5500 mile fae me).  On a chain that has done over 20,000 miles I can't measure any wear.

So I'm not that surprised by BMW's claims. 


The problem is you still have sprocket wear, in particular the front sprocket.  Mine was starting to look a little spent after 12,000 miles.  So I just popped in another (20 quid), I didn't bother fitting a new chain (170 quid) or rear sprocket (45 quid).
So have BMW also invented almost ever lasting sprocket, or are they advising you swap out the front sprocket now and again - and how many times?

I have had 4 BMW bikes (all Boxers -- R850 SE, R1150SE, R1200R and the present R1200RS SE and had no failures or breakdowns with any of them--mibby that's some sort of record ?? Mtread & Robbo.
