Givi rack arms...What are they made of.
« on: 13 January 2018, 08:11:53 am »
I want to get some extra brackets welded to one of my bikes (FZS1000) givi rack arms. However looking at the oval profile I'm wondering if they are cast . Anyone know for sure what they're made of.

Probably just an extruded flat steel tube, Givi describe them as a " full metal construction" but don't specify what metal. As  Grahamm says they do rust easily.

They are steel, had one on my gen1 and as I wasn’t interested in the rack i hacksawed the ends off and plugged the holes.

Ok guys, thanks for the info. So welding steel brackets to it shouldn't be a problem.

I have a feeling there were threaded holes on the inside of the arms that admitedley would need spacing out at the other end of the bracket. Not sure of your plans or if that is any help? I never wanted the rack part but wanted grab handles, with the threaded holes I was going to put a bracket to the pillion footrest just to support soft panniers.

You can definitely weld them if modifications are needed. Done it on other Givi racks before.

Excellent, thanks for all your input. As I have a high pipe on my bike, the plan is to get a spare pair so that I can weld some brackets to the right hand side so that I can fit a pannier frame for camping trips etc. The obvious option is to fit a low level exhaust when using the panniers, but want to avoid that if I can. If anyone's got a spare pair tucked away in their mancave, please pm me. :)

they are prone to rusting (must be the Italian connection)
I had mine blasted and powder coated and they've been fine since - 3yrs ago (I also bladdered the inside with Waxoyl)
