That's good mpg Eddie, best I've ever had is about 55mpg and I thought that was good.  Mine's (Gen 1 too) got the full monty and when showing restraint it can be quite frugal for what it is........... a fookin' animal when I unleash that poke, soooo addictive.   I've considered changing for a more modern bike, why, I don't know.  Everytime I lust after summat else, I think, "Why?"  'cos the Gen 1 may be labelled as an old mans bike, but it's economical too besides all of it's other well known attributes innit!  If you're gonna get more than 59mpg, it will have to be tied down on a recovery truck eh?  Fat chance of the Gen 1 being on one of them......oh, sh*t, opened my mouth.....  :eek
