Argh!
Got it done but that valve clearance check is pure:evil !

Hours of work to find out that something is actually fine!  :\
Oh well, at least it's only every 25K!

I'll suspect there are rather a lot of owners who will never check them, myself included (84,000 miles up and not checked). Most mechanics will tell you that these 5 valve Yamaha heads will stay in service for the life of most of the bikes.
I read that there's some women in the States who had her first check at something over 200,000 miles and just one  valve was on the cusp of needing a reshim. Impressive.

Not quite correct you can download her service log here http://fz1grl.net/2012/03/fz1_maintenance/

Scanning down the post on the linked page she says about her valve checks "I did the 1st one at 26k, the 2nd around 52k and then didn’t do one until 162k and only the 2 exhaust valves needed adjusting but even then they were still within spec. Haven’t done one since and am now at 219k."

But yes,  impressive all the same.

That is impressive. My take on these is that if they are in spec, they are in spec. I never change if in spec even if others want it in the middle of spec range. It could stay within spec for a lot more years and it is IN SPEC 😄

Cheers
