Depends whether it'll constantly be on your mind even after a full professional repair. How'd it happen anyway?
Personally, I wouldnt as both top & bottom rear engine mounts appear to be affected - if it was just one then I would at least entertain it.

I have a pair of engine cases sat outside if you want them?

If you've gone to the trouble and have the engine out, you might as well rebuild it. I have these cases as I bought a 'donor' engine that had a knackered top end due to the cam chain jumping a tooth (apparently). It cost me £80 and i just pulled the gearbox out of it as I new the rest of my engine was in good shape.

It'll only cost you a days work and a set of gaskets/sealant to split the cases and transfer the insides.

In NW London.

Not rocket science.  ;)  :D

This probably answers your question about 'what is in the top half of the engine'...

Given the damage I would not repair it myself. I dare say there are people out there that would have a go and you may find a repair shop that can make the mounts stronger than they were originally but I am not sure I would trust it.

What do you have to lose by trying a repair.
If it does not work then replace the crankcases or buy a replacement engine.
If you go the replacement crankcase route you will most likely need new shell bearings and a lot of gaskets and seals which could prove very expensive. There are 6 different shell bearings sizes and the crankcases are colour coded meaning that if the crankcase you buy does not colour match your broken ones then you will need shell bearings or which there are 12 and are about £10 each

I would take it to a fabrication/engineering works and ask their advice

The area under the top mount is the crankcase breather, no moving parts in there. There is a metal plate between it and the gears on the main and drive shafts with a pipe down to the sump.
