I'm going to give the kitchen a new lick of emulsion and spruce it up.  It's not a big kitchen so the walls have got dirty from cooking.


Question, is sugar soap good enough to clean kitchen walls prior to painting or is there some other hot tip out there?

what I've found to work best is hot water washing up liquid applied by a female and a few cans of beer?

Oh dear Harry- missus bending your ear again to get the decorating done for Easter,    just as you're wanting to relax, I'm getting the same grief, they're all the same.


Sugar soap is great stuff, does a fine job. Look for the Mangers brand it's a bit pricey but better than the wilkinscum stuff tbh.
Go for a matt emulsion too, hides any imperfections. If your really flush with money go for a water based quick drying eggshell

I used this stuff to cover the grease stains, etc, on my kitchen walls. Just put it on with a roller as normal and then emulsion over.

mate who's paid to decorate amongst other things, recommends sugar soap

on a different note.....when paint starts to split/lift, what is the best way to deal with it before repainting?

I would steer away from matt paint, yes a silk or satin will show more perfections but a matt paint will love to collect grease and dirt, I have found Wilkinsons kitchen paint good in the past - get the kitchen paint.
