Just the sort of stuff you learn when your daughter is at uni , I don't know why they don't show the world as it is , that's speculative .

I don't get it, surely they are drawn to the same scale as the other countries. Why would they make them smaller?

We see what is called a Meractor Projection, this is done so that it is easier to fit a round globe on a square page, nothing more nothing less.
All lines of Longitude (vertical) meet at the top at the poles but are spaced like lines of Latitude on the Equator.
If you look at a good atlas it will have two world maps at the beginning the normal, can't remember whats its called, projection which looks like an orange peel and then a Meractor next to it. All this means is that land nearer the poles gets blown up relative to land near the Equator.

Just ask a sailor.

Apparently it's to do with the developed countries wanting to look bigger than they actually are , what else aren't they telling us .

Learning this at Uni!!!!!!!!!! really ??
Sorry they will be teaching them to do joined up writing (in my case maybe even spelling)next.
My son has a double masters degree from Liverpool and Bordeaux Uni's.
We have recently stopped buying him Velcro lace up ?shoes. Seriously clever lad but I would not let him cross the road on his own.

I would foccin hope everywhere is bigger than they appear on a map of the world or we've wasted a lot of money getting planes to these places :rollin

The Mercator Projection is the most used one for International Sea Charts ... and also Land Maps.

The other main Chart Projection (that Sipperjack can't quite remember) is the Gnomonic (pronounced No-Monic) Projection.
