Best Engine Oil for Fazer 1000 1st Gen?
« on: 12 September 2015, 04:27:05 pm »
Hi Foccers, I'm looking to do an oil and filter change soon on my 04 FZS1000 Fazer and wondered if you guys have any preference for engine oil, and it appears that SAE 10w 30 is about right for the UK conditions and not higher than CD grade or higher I've just read in my Haynes manual.

Pardon me, what is that in plain simple English - CD grade I mean?  Read some adverts for oil (sad but true) :eek , and I can't understand it when comparing to 10w 30 oils for sale as there is no mention of that and I don't want to buy the wrong oil?

Hoping your superior knowledge can help me.

Thanks in advance.

!0W-40 semi synth with new filter http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamalube-Semi-Synthetic-Oil-Service-Kit-Yamaha-FZS1000-Fazer-01-05-/141540443262?hash=item20f477c47e

Any motorcycle specific oil in that grade will be fine, even some supermarket own brands.

My bike didn't like fully synth Motul oil, so went back to semi synth.

Silkolene 10w 40. Either comp 4 (synthetic) or super 4 (semi synthetic). Used both for years on my fazers and hold consistency and colour for good mileage. I have used castrol and halfords and both seem to end up thinning and becoming discoloured quickly.

That's great info, thanks very much. All very interesting.

Never heard of Castrol being a wee bit pants like that, although Halfords own brand being a bit naff doesn't exactly surprise me.

I used Silkolene on a previous bike without any issues, although not sure who manufactures Yamalube?

Not sure where you have read about CD grade oil? CD is old diesel oil grade surely not for the Fazer http://www.oilspecifications.org/api_eolcs.php

Long story short the best oil will be ester synthetic.

I buy these oils:

Silkolene PRO 4 10w-40 Full Syn 4T

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-812-silkolene-pro-4-10w-40-xp-full-synthetic-ester-4-stroke-engine-oil-for-all-high-performance-motorcycles.aspx

Silkolene Comp 4 10w-40 XP Ester Based 4T

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-785-silkolene-comp-4-10w-40-xp-ester-based-semi-synthetic-4-stroke-engine-oil-for-high-performance-motorcycles.aspx

The first one is the best oil you can do. The second is good enough to me. I mostly use the second one. But you have asked for the best.

Silkolene 10w 40. Either comp 4 (synthetic) or super 4 (semi synthetic). Used both for years on my fazers and hold consistency and colour for good mileage. I have used castrol and halfords and both seem to end up thinning and becoming discoloured quickly.

I might be wrong but I was always told that an oil that blackened up was doing its job by collecting the dirt in the engine. If an oil stays the same colour then it's not picking up the dirt.

I use Halfords 10w40 bike oil and change both the oil and OEM filter at or before 4000 miles.

I will settle on Fuchs Silkolene 10w 40 oil. Thanks to all who chipped in with help and advice.

Previously used with success Mobil 1 on previous RSV1000, and note that no mentions of it on this thread. Wonder why?

Yamalube link kindly sent, leads to ebay seller who's out of stock (Flitwick Yamaha)...maybe they had to discontinue because it was a great deal by the look of it, and maybe they weren't making enough profit?

Once again, thanks for your advice, it's appreciated.

You got six owners offering opinions - all valid, I hasten to add - so that's not exactly a vast spread of responses. :)

Which oil is best is an almost impossible question to answer.  There are literally thousands of oil threads on bike forums world-wide and none give a definitive solution.  Mobil 1 is good oil, as are 99.9% of the semi-synth and synth brands out there.

So long as you use a 10w-40 semi synth (or synth, if that's what you prefer) and change it regularly according to the Yamaha specs, your engine will run happily on it for 200k miles and more.  You may find one which you think makes the gearbox feel nicer, or seems to make the motor run quieter/smoother/faster/delete as applicable in which case that will be your favourite - simple as that. :)

Only thing I would add is that as long as it meets the proper specification for wet clutch motorcycle engine it will be fine.
I do not believe there is a best oil, just personal preferences.

I use Silkolene 10/40, semi synthetic on all my bikes, just because i can get it cheaper than anything else.
Change it regularly and all will be fine :)
