Swingarm play...

So, doing a final check over before an MOT, and i noticed..


Bike on centre stand, moving the rear wheel left to right is ok, no play, but grabbing the wheel and pulling up, there IS a tiny bit of play.....


I cannot figure out where its from, i have put in an R6 shock but cannot remember if it was there before, and am worried it may fail the MOT


regardless i will take it for one this week, for the money its fine if it tells me how much of an issue it is..


anyone else seen small ammounts of up and down play on the swingarm up and down when its unloaded i.e. bike on center stand


The rear shock has no play, and the linkage might be where it is coming from but i just cannot understand it...

I've changed the shock before while the bike's on the centre-stand and when I reassembled everything found some play in the linkages / swingarm that wasn't there.
I pushed her off the centre-stand and then put her back up on the stand again. This time the freeplay had gone!
No idea how or why but give it a go and see if yours does the same and sorts the wheel out

They've all got it to some point, whether it's a little, or a lot. Perfectly normal as long as its millimetres, and not centimetres!

Its barely visible, more a feel, but still there, i would guess 1mm or less movement at the furthest point from the pivot so cannot be massive as that is where it would be at its most...the actual play at the pivot or linkage must be minute....


I am just going to MOT it next few days and see what they say...


if i can get one tmrw lunch time we shall have a result!

Go check new bikes in dealers showroom and you'll find most of them have the same amount of play.

Shock mounting bearings can have a tiny amount of play which is amplified at the end of the swinging arm.

The guy who did my last MOT put a steel bar under the wheel and levered it up to test for play.
He said "Usual Yamaha bit of play there".
I said "Ohhh".
He said "Nothing to worry about, they are all like that".
It passed.
