Chain or wheel bearing issue
« on: 30 August 2015, 08:31:33 pm »
Hi all

I'm new to biking having passed my test a month or so ago, so not used to the sounds and characteristics of a bike. I have an issue with my 2002 600 Fazer.

I fitted a new chain and sprockets (JT and DID) about 4 weeks ago and noticed the chain made a buzzing sound when wheeling it around, I assume it will fade with time once they've worn in. Wheel is perfectly aligned and chain tension within spec.

Anyhow, the problem. When I've been for a ride and everything is warmed up, pushing the bike into the garage there is a creaking/clunking coming from the drivetrain. I'm struggling to isolate it, not sure if it's coming from the front sprocket area or the rear, possibly a wheel bearing?

Once it's all cooled down the creaking goes. Could it be the wheel bearing? Any ideas?

Cheers all
Myles

The buzzing is the chain cutting a new path on the plastic chain guide, it will pass once done, just make sure it's the correct tension and well oiled/lubed.

Thanks for the reply Darrsi, any ideas on the creaking. Could a wheel bearing creak when warm but sound fine when cold?

Difficult on info given because you're saying drive train then wheel bearing?
Bearings that are shot normally squeak or squeal.

Fair enough. It's difficult to pin point exactly where it's coming from.

With the bike up on the centre stand, spinning the rear wheel there is a creaking along with the mentioned chain buzz. Once everything has been left for awhile and things have cooled down the creaking has gone.

I'll take a video and upload it.

Should there be a washer/spacer behind the front sprocket? Looking down the chain towards the front, the sprocket seems offset to the inside edge of the chain, so the inside of the chain rubs against it rather than sitting centerally.

Sounds like your rear wheel isn't lined up properly, compare the markings on the rear of the swing arm by the axle on both sides.

Wheel alignment is spot on. Aligned perfectly to the markings on the trailing arm. Just to double check I ran a piece of string around the back wheel up to the front of the bike parallel to the front wheel, all good.

I am I right in thinking the OEM front sprocket had some kind of rubber vibration damping device? If so, the JT sprocket doesn't have this - would it effect the alignment of the sprocket?

is the chain too tight? that can cause it to clunk

I've never had that, but i very much doubt it.
With the bike on the centre stand just spin the rear wheel by hand, it should make a purring sound with no clunking, screeching or inconsistent noises. You'll know if it's right or wrong.
If the wheel is misaligned the chain will try to correct itself on the front sprocket creating nasty noises, which will be more noticeable when riding but should be easy enough to hear when moving by hand as well.
