Foxeye fuel light - adjustable?
« on: 09 June 2015, 01:27:45 pm »
Just got to the bottom end of the first tank of fuel in my new bike.  I thought that the fuel light may have been broken, as it wasn't coming on.  I braved it out and kept going, and found that it only comes on when the needle is in the middle of the 'E'.  In fact, if I remove the key at this point, the needle doesn't move, it's already at the end of it's travel.

I'm sure this isn't normal and I'm not sure I'd trust it another 10 miles from the light coming on, let alone the 50 that others have advised on here.

Is there any adjustment I can make to make the gauge/light more accurate - either in the gauge or with the fuel sender?

the fuel gauge is about as accurate as a blind sniper.

work out how far you get from a tank and go with the odometer or wait till the needle is low and fill up

That's when my light comes on, good for a minimum of 30 miles!

Once the light came on how many litres does it take to fill it? Once you know that you know roughly your range once the light comes on.

Exactly when my fuel light comes on. At this point I can usually only get just over 18ltrs in to brim it again. This is a 2003 Fazer with 22ltr (correct?) tank, so theoretically you've got about 3-4ltrs left. I've only pushed it for another 20 miles odd from light on though. We should organise a test, where we take out a can of petrol on back, and see how far we can go from light on...

I've got a '98 with a 18ltr tank, but I've drilled the hole out on the neck so I tend to get about 240/250 a full tank, but my light comes on when it gets to about 1/4 tank left (2nd line up from bottom) and I generally get about 40/50 miles when that happens.
I'm not a frugal rider so that's fairly good in my eyes.

You try it first, then let us know how you get on :rollin
The reason I'm saying this....we all ride differently and also different weights (No offence) plus some carry topbox, panniers etc. So you won't get an 'actual' figure you can rely on, plus I don't personally fancy getting  the stuff that maybe lurks at the bottom of the tank into my carbs etc then that would give me more headaches to sort if it wasn't stopped by the fuel filter :)

I feel better knowing that mine isn't the only one that behaves like this, and it may be normal behaviour.
I am wondering if they changed when the light comes on ( maybe not deliberately) between box an foxeye, as my box used to come on just below the quarter.

I'll just treat my light an an indicator that its time to fuel up, rather than an early warning.

Thanks for now all the replies

You should be able to take out the float chamber when tank is empty and bend it up a wee bit, that'll give you a better reading too :)
You might want to read this
http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,1413.0.html it'll cover your model too I'm sure as think they only changed the size of tank but the parts will be similar.
Go to reply 18 as there's a pic that'll show you what I mean about bending the sender slightly :)

Last week my low fuel light came on at the start off a short run and 35 miles later it took 15 litres to fill the tank squeezing in the last half litre.  1999 bike with 18 litre tank so still had 3 litres or more left in tank.  My light comes on about half way between the quarter full and empty marks.
