Just went pop
« on: 02 January 2015, 05:08:48 pm »
I just returned from a trip away and as per normal if my bike has not been ridden for 2 weeks, and its cold, I had to charge the battery, this normally only takes a small time until the charger said is full so presume battery is on the way out.
However today after removing charger I pushed the starter button, heard a pop from the battery area and lost all electrical power. Checked the fuses and they were all ok so was hoping for a bit of an idiots guide over what I should check or replace to try and solve this problem. I do not own any sort of electrical meter.
Thanks in advance for any help.

If all electrical power has gone, that is to say nothing electrical works, then I'd suggest the main starter relay fuse is blown. I'm guessing that if you follow the positive (red) wire from the battery the first thing that attaches to that is probably the starter relay. Check the fuse in there. There may be one visible on the outside, however if there is it's probably the spare.

However a bit of a worry if it has blown as I'm not sure what would cause that. Did you do anything other than connect the battery charger?
Feel the Fear and do it anyway!

It was after the charger was disconnected, just went when pressing the starter switch.
So there is a separate fuse on the live side of the battery, couldn't see that tonight as it was dark and my headtorch isn't the best, will check in the morning. Thanks

Check the main and ignition fuses, starter relay and starter circuit cut off relay there under the lefthand side panel, and seat.

It's also possible you've shorted out the battery unlikely though, sounds like a main fuse if you've lost all power.

Checked both fuses by relay and they are intact.
Would a relay failure prevent power to lights horn etc? How should I check the relays or is it a replace and see scenario?

Thanks

If the main fuse is blown you will get no power at all bike side of the battery.  Has the battery got voltage across the terminals?

If it has, there must be a fuse blown somewhere are you sure you've checked the main and the starter fuses?  Or you could have melted the loom somewhere that should have been obvious at the time with smoke/smell you don't mention anything about that so I'm assuming it's not happened.

If you have a multi tester you need to find out at what point power is cut off on the loom from the battery, quite easy to do you will need to lift the tank and just start checking each circuit in turn those that don’t work must have blown fuses or damaged wiring.

Maplins, Halfords and most car factors shops sell them save the wait, you can also use a couple bits of wire and a 12v bulb an old bulb holder is pefect.  You can disconnect one of the front or rear indicators and use that crude but it works.

There are two fuses in the starter relay, one is a spare, did you check both of them and if so how did you check them?

Seen it before, Lads checking the spare and thinking all is well  :lol

The "pop" could just be the solenoid making contact.

Does the odometer come back on when you release the starter button or is it all completely dead now?

All power seems to be dead, nothing anywhere.
I removed fuses (both of them) from relay and visually they were still complete, but were of different ratings, is this correct?

Just because the fuse looks ok doesn't mean it is. I've seen dud fuses with the break was hidden behind the plastic

Not yet.

Checked both fuses with multi meter and they were ok

Need a new battery anyway as old one didn't hold charge for 2 weeks in mild weather let alone the cold so waiting for payday to get that.

Also bought a cheap second hand starter relay as this seems to be the only component that is common for all power supplies.

Hopefully come weekend I will be able to post am back on the road.
