I have just noticed that the previous owner has had the back tyre plugged after i assume was a puncture. is it safe to ride or would it be best to replace the tyre? I have done a few miles on it since i bought the bike.

I've never replaced a tyre that could be plugged, always had it repaired, or if it's getting on a bit, repaired it myself.
Had dozens of flats over the years, never had a plug fail.

I wouldn't sweat it either mate. I've had a couple of plugs in one rear tyre before and that's on a gen 1. If I had the slower gen 2, then it really wouldn't concern me at all.

There is a manufacturers recommended speed limit on push through plugs of about 40 or 50 mph, also they are designed as a get you home solution. If you have the tyre removed and a vulcanised patch/plug fitted it would be safer.
Saying that I drove halfway across Saudi Arabia in my Volvo 850 T5, mostly around the 140 mph mark, and only found out later that the dealer had fitted a plug when it was in for service

I rode a FireBlade down our local race track at an indicated 165mph with a plugged back tyre with no problems, it was as good as normal.
