HELP NEEDED
« on: 04 September 2014, 08:27:01 am »
Could anyone help I'm pulling my hair out here, I'm having intermittent problems with starting my box eye fzs600, nothing happens when you press the start button I've took the battery off and give it a full charge, put it back on and still nothing, I've checked all the wires to see if anythings loose and I can't see anything the only other thing I've noticed it that when you turn the ignition there's usually a click click click sound, that isn't happening, all the lights on the dash are bright the headlights are bright when the ignition is on so to me that's telling me the battery is fine,  only way I've been able to get it started is to bump start which I'm getting rather good at lol!! If anyone could through some ideas on similer problems etc they know or have had it would be a big help, this is the 3rd time this year it's happened and usually it's start working again after a day or so but this time it hasn't. :'(

Thanks Danny

Just to add it had been stood for just over 2 weeks In The garage while I was away on holiday, but it fired up first time no probs, after that the only other thing I have done is fit some heated grips then lock it back up till I went to use it yesterday for work.

Have you checked the battery using a multi-metre? This would be your best bet to determine if the battery is in good health or not. It certainly sounds electrical as the "click, click, click" you hear is the fuel pump priming the carbs

You want to be seeing a strong 12V on the battery with the ignition off. Then turn on the ignition and see if / how much the voltage drops when you turn on lights etc. If you can get the bike started, test the battery again - it should be around 14V and this is to check that the charging system is working.

I assume you have checked your heated grip wiring, but just in case I'd suggest going over it with a multi-metre as well to make sure you haven't accidentally shorted something. How is it connected up? Direct to the battery, or via a relay?

Do you have any sort of alarm or immobiliser on your bike?

The grips are the oxford premium sports ones that just connect straight to the battery I've disconnected these just incase they where draining the battery but still nothing, there is a box under the seat which is and alarm immobiliser but I have nothing for it as it's never worked when I bought it, if it was something to so with that wouldn't the immobiliser stop me from bump starting it??

Sounds like a dead battery to me possibly finished off by the grips and leaving it parked up. Have you got a multimeter? The lights coming on isn't really a sign of a healthy battery because it takes a lot more current to turn the engine over than it does to power the lights. You could try pushing the starter switch and while it's pushed give the starter motor a few taps with a hammer and see if it turns over. There's a chance it's stuck from carbon dust but it's more likely that the battery is weak. If you've got another 12v source like a car you could try jumping it off that and if the starter spins you know it's the bikes battery that's the problem. Be sure to keep the car engine off if you do it.

try turning off the lights when you try and start it, my mate had a failing battery and wouldnt start but then turned off lights and fired right up.

using a very high quality THICK motorcar jump lead, hot wire the starter motor wire (there is only one coming from the motor) to the +ve battery terminal. Its will arc/spark but hold it there. Does the starter  motor spin?

ONLY DO THIS WITH A HIGH QUALITY JUMP LEAD AND DO NOT TOUCH THE ENGINE OR CHASSIS WITH THE OTHER END OF THE LEAD WHILST YOU ARE HUNTING TO THE STARTER TERMINAL

If there's no clicking from the fuel pump when the ignition turned on sounds like either connector not in properly or fuse in ignition circuit blown

yeah, thats a good idea which I forgot about - the pump clicks about 5 times after main switch on but before you press the starter button. If it aint clicking then its the main switch , run/kill, or fuse or - although unlikely if it worked before - a wiring/loom problem.

I bet its electrical and not the s/motor - spesh as you've been messing with heated grips and now it doesnt work. I'd stick my neck out and agree with Jules - a fuse; or a short or bad earth or battery. Do what others have suggested and use a multimeter to check the Volts as above.

Just realised if the bike is running fine once it's been bump started and doesn't cut out after a couple of minutes the fuel pump must be working.  I'd check if 12v getting to starter motor when button pressed. If it is then starter motor off and check if brushes stuck. If 12v not getting through then check starter relay

check the rectfier. might not be shunting enough power to battery now that the grips are there.
