Blowing silencer

Hi all,

I've just changed my header gaskets on my 2002 Foxeye as they were shot (easy job - soaked nuts in plusgas for a few days), and while giving the system a wee check over I noticed the gap between the front of the silencer and the black link pipe section was blowing - is this normal as I've never experienced it on any previous bike and my basic mechanical logic tells me that all the exhaust waste should exit out the back!?
I'm kinda hoping it means the original can is duff so will help me justify a shiny new end can!

Yes, that can is shot. You can bodge it by squirting high temperature silicone sealant in the gap if you're a tight git like me, but it's not a long term solution... if you are hankering after a new can, go for it.

Yep.common prob on the 6....ive got 2 spare std end cans that both do that, its a shame as the outside is in excellent condition...

mr fazerider...wheres the best place for the high temperature silicone sealant ?....yep, ian tight aswell

How much power do you reckon I'd be losing with the can in this state?
About to do a 3-day trip round the top of Scotland and I don't want to be letting it get any worse!

Mine was blowing and I just use bathroom silicone. Seemed to do the job a treat and has held out fine.

I've used Holts Firegum in the past on my CBR. Take the can off, pop some of this in a bead around the inside, reassemble and the problem usually disappears. The heat of the exhaust cures it from a paste to a hard but flexible seal.


Probably a good idea to get a new can  . I'm waiting for this to happen to mine so I can justify it to SWMBO.

mine has been leaking for 2 years or so now. MOT always says the same thing "Exhaust leaking but not excessively noisy". If it ain't too bad and you don't even wanna buy silicone then leave it.
