question re MOT

Hi all. Had a bargain off a colleague but need to put an mot on it. He had it a few years but didn`t do more than 200 miles a year and no mods etc.
I`ve noticed that the rear plastic thingy that holds the number plate has been cut down by a previous owner and theres no rear reflector.w Question is will this be a mot failure and if so coud i get away with a stick on jobbie onto the plate.
He never had a problem when he mot`ed it but was he just lucky.

Nope i dont think you'll have any problem with that one buddy.


Most mot testers are pretty sound & things like noisy cans....tiny number plates etc will still often pass.


I would doubt that the reflector is even mandatory...probably just the plate with correct sized letters.


My last mot my number plate and exhaust (without the noise baffle in) both passed...but it failed on excess play in the swinging arm..rocking bike left and right you could see the excess play.




You just dont know til you get it in there.


On basis of how mint the bike looks i think it'll pass but just make sure all the basics are working...indicators, lights, horn, cut off switch & crack on.

A rear reflector is mandatory, I just had small stick on one fitted by the mot station, was all of 50p and stick on the lower corner of the plate like a circular cola cube

This came up on another forum just the other day, apparently the 2 most common failures for bike MOTs are small number plates and no reflector!!!

My MOT bloke keeps sticking the little cola cube on my number plate too!  It must cost him a fortune as I keep pulling the bugger off, it looks naff!

On my bike I have moved the numberplate up and over the origional reflector and then cut off the mudguard flush with the bottom of the numberplate. I have then fitted a 2x1 inch reflector on a bracket bolted to the mudguard behind the plate. Now of course I have my reflector on display at all times but if you were to choose you could swivel the reflector up behind the mudguard (like my picture) if you wanted, and pop it down when you have to like for the mot.
I see now you have put a picture up it looks like they have cut away most of the guard and only left the bit for the indicators, so not sure if my idea would work for you, here is mine

My wife's ZZR400 had pretty much the same issue, cut away mud guard with a crappy bicycle reflector hanging down off number plate. Going back over old MOT test certificates, I came across a previous fail for a missing rear reflector - which explains all. Have picked up a replacement mud guard off ebay for a tenner, will fit it one day to just tidy it all up.

So, yes, you need a reflector. But it seems any old thing bolted on will suffice.

Mine has a hacked rear end, its annoying as the rain gets up over the back and soaks me.
