Valve shims
« on: 28 December 2013, 01:59:33 pm »
Happy new year to all!

finally got round to doing the valve clearances after 44,000 miles. I have found that both inlet and exhaust shims are now on the lower clearance and require adjustment. Any tips for access to cheaper shims rather than paying out to a main dealer.

Cheers Yoss

I got mine from wemoto when I got mine

Make up a table of clearances & currently fitted shims, I repositioned a couple and only had to buy too sizes.

But overall clearances do not change much with use so if they are in speck, even just, don't bother chasing your ass too much,
Mine was at 61,000 miles and would not have changed them if I did not need to get other parts at the time

I bought a full set of shims from Hot Cams via ebay USA.  Cost about £70 shipped to the UK.

Concur with the above - if they're in spec, even if close to the lower limit, that's still in spec.  Maybe check again in 12k miles if you're worried that they'll tighten up still further.

Do you mean they are out of tolerance? Or are they just within limits, just in tolerance.

I took mine to a bike garage to get checked, so I'm no expert on checking valve clearances.

But I am an Inst Tech, and if it's within tolerance it's within tolerance.  Box up and ride on.

I have a really nice man do mine. I asked how much if shims need replacing, nothing, as he just swaps them with a mate at a bike shop. Although mine are all original and within spec.

 Thanks for the info,
Got my shims from Wemoto. Its all back together now and running well. Removed the AIS at the same time.
I now have 11 used shims going spare if anybody wants them.
