I muffed up!...
« on: 04 December 2013, 11:03:38 am »
Hey,

So I recently got Muffs fitted, was hesitant but the thought of paying £200 for gloves that still wouldn't keep my hands as warm just seemed daft.

I got the Tucano Urbano muffs and generally am happy with them. Only ridden twice since I got them so still trying to get used to them... However I have a couple of questions I'm hoping someone can help me with. (I should point out they were fitted by the dealers who were pretty helpful but I can't get back there for a bit)

1) The throttle is stiffer now. I'm sure this is just to do with the gasket used to attach them, but has anyone else had a similar problem and what did you do to solve it? I'm thinking i'll have to have a proper fiddle with it but time is limited due to work and daylight so I figured someone might have advice

2) How do people use the Full Beam switch? I can get to the indicators ok, but the Hazard lights and Full beam switch seem very very difficult to get to with out taking my hand out. The muffs I've got have a cover for the Thumb which I'm actually thinking about cutting off if I can't get used to it. I know it will reduce their warmth a little, but I think they'll still be ok.

Would be great to get people's thoughts/advice,

Cheers

 :)

P.S I haven't used the term Muff so much since I was 16!  ;)

At a guess they have pushed the clamping ring (if that's what its called) hard up against the end of the grip so it's causing the grip to rub against the switch housing. I quite wiggle should pull it away a bit and free the throttle.

In my experience all muffs take some getting used to and do feel cumbersome initially. If I were you I would stick with it for a bit, they're never going to be perfect but the benefits of a good muff are worth it.

U loose the full beam if ur ands r in muff. (Ooer) the gasket that holds the muff on i remove so i can take em off easily. When ur ridin ur hands will naturally keep the muffs in place.
Just flapping about on this stagnant little pond on the outer rim of the internet.....yup....  :-))

Same issue I had - ended up with cruise control! As mentioned above they need to be moved back from throttle end.

Same issues here and thinking the same about cutting off the thumb  :lol

I have an additional issue in so much as the over lapping hooking part of my gloves velcro straps get caught on the fur lined edges so going to shave it off and have another go at riding with them. They work well and I can ride in thin summer sports gloves.

Good luck fella, you're not alone :lol

I've been using the Tucano Urbano muffs for a couple of years and they are brilliant.
I wouldn't cut the thumb off, you just need to get used to using them.
The split ring & cable ties that stop the muffs from coming off are totally unnecessary and I don't use them. Try taking them off and see if that solves your throttle problem.

I've got the same ones .. don't have an issue with the throttle at all. I have the o ring and cable ties fitted.

Full beam and indicators (esp the indicators) are, however, fiddly to use .. I just put up with it.

R321 I believe for bikes without mirrors attached to bars.

The neoprene ones are good for use during summer if its raining- muffs not only stop wind chill but also stops rain being forced up your jacket sleeves!

As for winter the ones in link are the way to go, thicker, fluffy lining, metal reinforcement bars to secure them in place.
Although starting to feel the chill now I've still been riding in my summer gloves without heated grips, that'll soon change though!

Had a set of bikeit cheapo muffs for 12 years, and used them every winter (put about 50+k on them now). Although I've modified them a bit by screwing bar ends through them, and inserting wire round the front to stop them distorting they work brilliantly.
Fleece lined, waterproof, and now they stay where I put them. They're not massive, so don't look like boxing gloves on a 5 year-old kid either.
I think they cost me £15 when I bought them, one of the best 'sensible' buys ever. You don't necessarily need mega bucks ones if your inventive. ;D
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!

I will be fiddling with the Muffs this weekend  ;)  so i'll see what I can sort out.

It's good to know I'm not the only one who's had these issues though.  :thumbup

They'll fit fine, the bit for the mirrors is just an extra flap with velcro, just fold them over and possibly gaffer tape them in place! This is just an extra space for water to get in though!
