Where do me flaps go
« on: 17 November 2013, 07:51:19 pm »
Those rubber flaps that come down from under the petrol tank, do they sit forward of the cam tops or slip down the back towards the spark plugs. And what are they for.

in front of the cam cover, I believe they are there to stop dirt being thrown up from the front wheel. To stop muck getting into the spark plug wells etc.

Makes sense, spose, seems like an after thought on picking a front mud guard out of a parts bin when they designed the bike that wasnt quite right for the layoutg

In front- it's there to restrict the amount of water getting to the plug caps/ spark plugs in rain, it's not a fully faired bike and this can be an issue- I know because I had several plug caps fail in heavy rain on my mk1!

If you go by the manual, they go behind the exhaust cam cover.

Not exactly been covered when you have 2 different answers, in front of, and behind the cam covers?
I was always led to believe they go behind the cam covers, to guide water into the drainage holes.
So, with this useful information in mind, my flaps are in front of the cam covers!

Pick the bones out of that!

Have mine infront. Why would you want to send the crap into the engine?

They dont sit very well to the front as they create a scoop. Again its like an afterthought and they couldnt get them to just flap straight down to the front, like they sit straight down at the sparkplug side.  When to the front does the wind blast push them back.

They stay in place at the front. Looking at the pic from the silver wheels thread it seems to go into the gap in the engine and infront of the plugs. Can't see the logic of it myself.

I had this once a few years ago in heavy rain on the motorway, down to 2 cylinders all of a sudden! Now have me flaps hanging down in front and not had a problem with getting wet in there since (snigger).

Having said that, virtually all official photos of the Fazer I've seen have had the flaps positioned behind the cam covers, and the part is named "Air guide" on the AJS website so not sure what it's intended purpose actually is?

Records state my 6 just had a Yamaha dealership full service when bought it and found the flaps tucked down behind the front cam cover... So I pulled 'em out n hung 'em over the front cam cover as per previous Fizzers iv owned.. Does look like a poss water trap more than a cover when wedged in front the plug caps..
