front end damage advice
« on: 13 October 2013, 05:02:40 pm »
Hi foccers,

Had my trusty favour nicely sorted after a service/MOT and took her out to the shops for a treat...then some plonker decided to reverse into me on the slip road. After he'd finished humping the front end of my fazer with his people tank (carrier) we exchanged insurance details. Apparently he thought he'd hit a bollard....Totally his fault etc.

Anyway, I need some advice, I rode the 1 mile home and found the bars/forks don't hold straight without slight right hand input. What's the best way of checking bent forks/frame etc? All the plastics are fooked so does anyone have any experience of insurance claims and whether this will be fixed/written off? And lastly, despite it not being my fault am I likely to be stung with excess/higher premiums?

Thanks!

ps no vultures please.

Firstly- why the foc was he reversing up a slip road?
If going through the insurance should get police involved as that's obviously a big no no for which he should get done for it and deservedly so!

For the age of the bike the damage will write the bike off, any estimates go on genuine replacement part prices, not forgetting that if you do go through insurance everything will be claimed for and costed- including small scratches to any engine casings, mirrors, indicators, foot rests, levers, etc etc.

You can loosen all the bolts for the front end ( lower and upper yokes at the forks) then re tighten, sometimes a nudge can twist things slightly, loosening and re tightening can put them back to normal.

Yes, your premiums will go up slightly, even when claiming a non fault accident (which yours is) and claiming through the others insurance company! It's an absolute disgrace and 4 non fault claims in 5 years has seen my insurance go up to stupid!

We're you injured in any way or was your helmet/ clothing damaged?

If not I'd be tempted to suggest £500 to the dick that knocked you off, you could get fairing and a (better) front end for that!

The problem with accident solicitors is they're not that interested if there's no injury, that's where the money comes from and since the change in law not many would be bothered to take on your case.
Now the annoying flip side is most insurance companies are not happy to deal with the third party their insured driver has hit directly (in my experiences) and therefore you're pushed into finding a solicitor!

If you do go through solicitors/ his insurance then have a hire bike immediately, even if you're happy to ride yours- they will pay out the value of your bike within a couple of weeks as an interim payment as bike hire charges are astronomical for insurance claims (I had one which was charged at £60 per DAY, they payed out for my bike but I still needed to hire a bike, signed some paper work and the bike I had was charged to me at £80 per WEEK as private hire!)

Oh, and if there is any damage to your clothes/ helmet you will be claiming for all that too!

Thanks punkstig!

When I say slip road, I mean the road into a shop car park off the main road. He was overtaking parked cars on our side, however it was not clear. He stopped, popped it in reverse and flew back at me (I was stationary in my lane as I'd seen it was not clear). Unfortunately all the witnesses simply buggered off to do their shopping! He was quite sure he would accept full blame so fingers X'd he'll keep that attitude!

My insurance is only TPFT so will have to claim through his, although I do have Legal Expenses included on my policy. Will call both mine and his insurers tomorrow and see how it proceeds.

My clothing is fine but leg is sore, no visible damage though!

didn't manage to get my food shop done in the end...claim for hunger?? ;)

Do not bother phoning your insurance company yet- check your small print first, I believe after an accident no matter who's fault when you tell your insurance company they may well cancel your policy on that date, which then leaves you screwed on a hire bike as you need insurance!

Speak to his insurance first and see what they say, if they are not cooperative with you then ring a solicitor, as yours is tpft your own insurance won't help you much!

Get it checked by a mechanic. There could be damage to the frame or headstock not just the forks.
