I've been using Dunlop RoadSmart II on my FZ8 and so far I can't fault them..

Fazer8 / FZ8 / Re: FZ8 'race' shift pattern
« on: 19 August 2015, 01:20:20 pm »

What is race shift pattern  :eek

basically changing from 1 down 5 up to 1 up 5 down. The easiest way I've been told is to flip the clamp over 180 deg on the splined shaft but I'm not convinced there's enough room to do it or if the clamp will work mechanically from the top.. or if there's enough adjustment on the selector rod to cope with the extra distance..  hence my question..

just being lazy and trying to avoid getting the spanners out if there's no way to make it work without investing some dosh  :o

Hi,

is it possible to set up an FZ8 with a race shift pattern without investing hundreds of pounds on new rearsets ?

I'm thinking not as there is not much room through the frame for the selector rod but happy to be proved wrong.

i got my calipers off like that..  was tight with the wheel but they did come off..

and because of that I can't remember if you can get the pads out the top of the caliper.

if you pull the 'R' pins out and knock the pins through you'll soon find out...

BTW the main caliper bolts torque back up to 40nm

Im running an SP Engineering big bore can on my FZ8 and they do howl once the revs rise..

For me, I like the position of the can tucked up just not sold on the long link pipe...

no probs..

there are loads of different versions on ebay.

When I looked for mine I tried the match the diameter of the head to the fitting and then just trimmed down the 'threaded' part to fit the hole..

hope you find the right size.

I used something like this to block up the holes on my FZ8 after I fitted bar end mirrors..

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Plastic-Black-Blanking-End-Caps-Round-Ribbed-Tube-Inserts-UK-Stock-/311377996220?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=610465292322&hash=item487f9329bc

Just have a measure up and get the size and quantity you need..  I had to trim the 'threaded' part down a little but they've been in over a year with no problem..

probably only be a couple of quid with a couple of spares if you cock one up trimming it down..

edit..

just found a pic..

Fazer8 / FZ8 / Re: FZ8 rear shock..
« on: 29 May 2015, 08:16:00 pm »
well I spent a little more time in the saddle today and I think I need a little more preload as with the extra grip now the back end squats a little too much from my liking. Unfortunately the shock is already set to maximum and there is no compression adjustment..  as a quick fix I will take the plastic washers from the spring on the old shock and add them under the spring on the new shock but that may not be enough so I might have to get a 5mm or 10mm alloy spacer made up in an effort to lower the sag to about 20mm from 30mm..  From experience on the old shock each click of preload changed the sag by about 5mm so hopefully it wont take too much packing.

It's still very ride able and over some familiar bumpy roads today I managed to stay in the saddle comfortably instead of having to brace my legs and lift my butt to stop me being fired out the seat..

just little tweeks I suppose, just a shame I've maxed out the preload already..  The later model FZ8 are not any lighter as they are pretty much the same up to 2014 so not sure why it's ended up like this but hey ho ..  it is what it is...

Fazer8 / FZ8 / FZ8 rear shock..

Two posts in two days..    The FZ8 Forum has never known such activity..   :lol

Anyway...  I know this subject has been done to death but I wanted to share my experience from today.

So about 2 weeks ago I bought a 2nd hand but v low mileage standard shock from a 2013 FZ8 as the later models come with damping adjustment.

I fitted the shock this morning and it was a very easy fit as obviously it's a straight swap and then set about setting it up for my weight.

I ended up with max preload on the spring and the damping adjustment was 7 clicks back from turned fully clockwise..

This resulted in a sag of 30mm from the bike unloaded to me sitting on it which is about where it needs to be and when compressing the suspension and releasing with the bike on it's wheels the front and rear rebound at about the same rate so that seemed like a good place to start..

for the record I'm about 13 stone in my gear....

On the road, well I was amazed at the difference. I can feel the rear shock working and the whole bike just feels alot more stable even when using max throttle over bumps and ripples the tyre just grips instead of skipping about and spinning up which is what it did before. I also managed to stay in my seat for the whole ride which was also a bonus...

Over all I'm very pleased with how the bike rides now with fairly minimal investment as the rear shock was £40 off of Ebay and I had the forks re-built with 10wt oil whilst maintaining the the standard springs and have dropped the yolks down the fork legs by 5mm.

I'm sure with more investment in Ohlins springs, fork cartridges and a new, aftermarket rear shock it could be made even better but that would be the best part of a grand all in where I've spend about £120 so far..

Guess the message is you dont need to pay hundreds of pounds to improve the way your early model FZ8 rides, just a few choice and in-expensive changes can do the trick.

The only caveat to this is that with the max preload already dialled in the max rider weight for this to work is not gonna be much higher than 13st. To far above that and you'd have to get the shock re-sprung but even that is not that much money.. I think Hyperpro variable rate springs are about £85 new.

thanks for reading and I hope it offers some help to other FZ8 owners who are disparing of their rear end   :)

Fazer8 / FZ8 / Re: possibly the best mod I've made ??
« on: 28 May 2015, 04:15:17 pm »
Well I swapped the washers over today and the foot mounts are much better.

Having said that I can feel a few extra vibes through the balls of my feet but when resting on the instep of my boots I cant feel them.

I'm gonna leave them flipped for now as I think having more rigid foot mounts is worth the odd vibration..  Will have to get out and do a few miles to see how I get on..

thanks again..  great tip...   8)

If you want to make it better still, you can take the rubber washers from the peg mounting bracket and turn them the wrong way round. That reduces bracket flex even further.

Really ??    I had taken a look at them and I had assumed that they would be the same either way round...

That's a job for tomorrow..

thanks for that...

Fazer8 / FZ8 / possibly the best mod I've made ??
« on: 27 May 2015, 03:57:15 pm »
Hi,

Just made a small and relatively cheap mod to my FZ8 and I am so pleased at the difference it's made to riding the bike..

I just feel so much more connected having got rid of the rubbery, ugly OE pegs. Really chuffed and only £25.

..........................

I have fitted some billet alloy foot pegs and they feel great under my feet and no vibes because the pegs are still rubber mounted on the frame.

and here's the ebay link to the items I bought. They came from far east but I've had no issues at all and the delivery was about 10 days.

There are UK based versions but they are nearly twice the price..

thanks for reading...

be interesting to see which one you ride more over the summer..

I love my FZ8 with the mods I have done and it turns me into a bit of a lunatic when I ride it   :evil but it's such good fun..

Cant wait to get the PCIII fitted and mapped....   :eek

Breakdown recovery or buying the first battery you can get hold of in France will be alot more than £50.

Buy a new battery, fit it, forget about it and enjoy your trip...

For Sale & Wanted / WANTED.... HyperPro rear spring for an FZ8.
« on: 08 May 2015, 12:34:10 pm »
hi all..

just trying to improve the rear end of my FZ8 a little.

I understand that the shock is garbage but I've bought a later shock off a 2013 model that has some damping adjustment and with a hyperpro spring might be a little better that the existing 5 year old item..

Just done have £400 to spare right now for a nitron / Ohlins shocker.

thanks

For Sale & Wanted / Re: Delkevic 200mm round stainless end can
« on: 07 May 2015, 02:47:43 pm »
if it's not stamped 'NOT FOR ROAD USE' then it's up to the MOT tester to determine if it's too loud.

I have an SP engineering, stubby, big bore end can (quite similar in size to that and also straight through) on my FZ8 and with the DB killer in place my tester passed it with an advisory saying the exhaust is loud.

HTH...

Fazer8 / FZ8 / Re: Forks
« on: 03 February 2015, 02:39:22 pm »
I've put 10wt oil in mine (5wt standard I think) with the standard air gaps and raised the forks by 5mm through the yolks.

result is a less bouncy and much more planted front end. Dont get me wrong there is still room for improvement but for the cost I think it's worth a go.

For info I have my rear pre-load set around 20mm static sag at this time. That's not much but still rides ok and not to hard on the rear.. traction is still pretty good on all but the most rippled surface but I can deal with that if the front end is behaving itself.

Also just done the same. Ditched the OE bridgestone and fitted Dunlop Roadsmart IIs.

totally transformed and they inspire so much more confidence in the cold / damp conditions. Only had one small front slide on the Dunlops and that was in the first couple of miles of a ride and also involved some diesel. Compared to having at least one slide every time I went out in less than perfect conditions on the 021s, mostly on slow ish speed roundabouts, I'd says that's a pretty good improvement.

got this one in the end.. It's on the bike already..

comes from the USA but was delivered in 3 days and was £21..

Also put a 48t on the rear sprocket, which is plus 2 on standard so it's quite lively now..  just need to get a speedo healer at some point..

Hi, I'm getting some new tyres and a 15t (-1) front sprocket fitted, or so I thought..

Seems that my local dealer cannot get a 15t front sprocket for a 2010 FZ8..

Has anyone else done this and if so where did you get your front sprocket from?  I've seen some in the USA but nothing UK yet, not even on Ebay..

cheers

Excellent cans. Got one on mine. Wicked sound on roll off in first. Even better when the block is warmed up.

yeah..  pops and crackles like a goodun on the overrun..  Not sure my Lambda sensor is enjoying it quite so much though..   :eek
