General / Re: On-duty police officer dies in crash in Southampton
« on: 06 April 2013, 09:42:05 pm »
Most police forces use unmarked bikes for surveillance which often includes "loss catching".... This is where cars following a subject loose sight of the subject.... They call the bike up which is normally well behind and the rider has to make ground to catch up with sight of subject, talking the cars back into the following..... This is often used in heavy traffic as the cars can easily get stuck in traffic etc..... They use unmarked bikes incase subject sees them etc.... It is a really useful role but really dangerous as the rider is under pressure to catch the subject without drawing too much attention.....

Don't know if this is what the rider was doing but may explain it if he was filtering at speed on an unmarked bike.....

General / Re: Perishing tyres
« on: 06 April 2013, 09:32:35 pm »
Worth speaking to tyre dealer, but what was the date of manufacture on the tyre?

I've seen this sort of thing before and tyre manufacturer said it was because the tyre had passed its six year life. Until that point I didn't realise tyres has "best before" dates..... Apparently it's something to do with chemical breakdown inside the compound...... Hence all tyres have a date mark on the sidewall..... It is normally a week number (2 digits) followed by a year (2 digits) and normally appears slightly different moulding from the size etc.....  So may be something like 4209..... Week 42 of 2009

Sentences vary for that offence..... I know of cases where points were given and cases where prison has resulted..... Whatever the sentence it doesn't bring the deceased back and is often very little help to the family.....

A tragic loss.....

That moment could last forever for any of our families, which is who my thoughts would be with....

General / Re: Road Tax Via DVLA On-Line ?
« on: 04 April 2013, 10:11:25 pm »
Sorry.......
Mid is the motor insurance database..... It is a public access database all insurance companies have to subscribe to.

I believe the public site is askmid.com or something very similar. It allows you to put your registration in and it then tells you if that vehicle is insured or not.

It is used by dvla and police and various others to check insurance is in force on a vehicle. As with all databases though it is only as good as the information put into it..... For example if someone puts an o (oscar) in instead of a 0 (zero) at an insurance policy input, it will come up with the vehicle not being insured.....

Hope that helps....

Another issue I've seen on these is where the extended and heavier pressure reading caps has bent the valves causing them to leak......

General / Re: 3d domed number plates
« on: 04 April 2013, 07:38:40 pm »
I haven't seen the exact plates you refer to but the law is very simple on plates. If it is a mass produced car or bike (without complicating things) the plate has to be a standard plate conforming to bsau 145. If they confirm the plate is made to meet that standard, and shows the standard on the front of the plate you should be okay.... If not expect a £60 ticket, or worse if the bike was examined post crash (hopefully never happen but.....) be prepared for insurance company to deem it not roadworthy due to plate legality and possibly invalidate, or drop your insurance to 3rd party only......

The dvla system checks the insurance against the mid and if details don't match it will stop process..... You can check the motor insurance database online mid which may help explain if it doesn't come up....

Another tragic loss for the family and a reminder to us all of how a momentary act can last forever....

Offsiding is something that is taught on the police advanced motorcycle and car course and is a pass or fail element of the course.... It has great advances and at times is extremely useful andimproves safety..... However if used incorrectly is a serious danger.... It is not encouraged on thestandard police riding course typically as the risk of poor judgement is so high...... I use it when I need to....

As for the police comments if any of us do wrong we should expect consequences..... These days too many people try to blame others for their own problems. I'm not saying every officer is perfect, far from it. Officers are taken from the community as represent the community which does include bad as well as good. All officers are taught interaction management, ie talking to people, based on the physiological principle called betaris box. This revolves around the persons behaviour, including voice, language and actions suggesting how an officer should deal with them..... Like anyprinciple there are always exceptions and also officers from time to time will miss read signs.... Nobody is perfect, it should be about learning from every interaction.....

General / Re: Car mot (brakes)
« on: 03 April 2013, 10:09:00 am »
The mot testers are trying to get their heads round all the new changes in the morning but should still advise, but as stated earlier and not forced to.....

I would also add if only one side is grooved make sure the floating caliper is free and lubricated as it may not be..... Which is not something covered by the mot unless it shows a braking imbalance on the rolling road......

Events, Meets, Ride outs etc / Lowestoft motorcycle event
« on: 25 March 2013, 09:48:33 pm »
A young biker from Lowestoft is organising a motorcycle safety event on Saturday 27th April 2013. He has arranged for the towncentre to be available for various displays and dealers etc to try and promote road safety to make biking safer for us all. There will be giveaways and various stalls etc trying to educate all road users of how vunerable we can be as motorcyclists, but how enjoyable it can be to be on two wheels....
If any of you fancy a ride out it should be a decent day with some great routes to and from the town making it a chance to have a run out to the coast and see some new bikes and chat.....
Bikesafe, fire service, police etc will all be there and local dealers hopefully including Honda, Piaggio, Vespa, Triumph and of course Yamaha have all been invited....
This is the facebook page.....       www.facebook.com/motorbikesafe

For Sale & Wanted / FZ6 for sale...... Now reduced price
« on: 25 March 2013, 09:16:13 pm »
It is with much regret that my Fz6 is now up for sale......   :'(
I have owned the bike for 3 years and it has been superb but cost cutting is hitting home and I need to realise some cash from the bike.....
It is a 2005 model in silver and black. It has been really well cared for and is taxed and has MOT until Feb 2014. It has done about 28600 miles but this may increase very slightly if the spring ever comes....
It is has only sensible and practical mods of scottoiler, heated grips, luggage rack, optimate socket, stainless steel radiator grill, frame crash mushrooms and tyre pressure monitors. It has not been thrashed and only used for solo riding. Tyres, chain and sprockets have been recently replaced and are in good condition.
I am looking for £2000 ono for the bike. I am in Lowestoft Suffolk and you are welcome to come and look if we arrange something.
If you want any further info just email me at crtr729@aol.com

Hi....

Definitely looks like brake light switch wiring..... Could check it with a multimeter if you had one.... Worth sorting out before blows a fuse or worse someone drives into the back of you when they don't realise you are braking....

General / Re: Tax Discs
« on: 27 February 2013, 08:49:17 pm »
I would reinforce the postings so far.... The law says the disc should be displayed on the nearside of the bike towards the front....
However from a practical point of view a displayed photocopy would satisfy most police officers.... I spoke to a rider the other day who displayed a photocopy and had the original under his seat which was a good idea in my book....
The police databases do not hold tax details and only hold markers for tax that has expired by 6 months or Sorn notices..... The officer has to go with what they see.... The databases are good for insurance and mot (good but not perfect) but with the tax, what you see is what you go with....

Introduction / Hi all....
« on: 24 February 2013, 09:38:50 pm »
Hi all.....

This is the first time I've embraced the modern age and joined something like this, so please be gentle with me... :D

I am the dark side of 40 and live in Suffolk..... Always been into bikes and currently have a general 2 faired fz1s, a 2005 fz6s, an er6 and a k1 hayabusa..... Mostly commute on my bikes and ride an fjr1300 for work......

Fairly handy with the spanners and have tinkered with lots of bikes over the years.....

Bought the fz6s a few years ago now as I needed a cheap decent commuter and loved it..... So went and bought the fz1 end of last year but haven't really been able to use it much since with the weather and needing to do a few bits on it to get it right.....
