Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Givi Pannier Racks
« on: 28 January 2013, 07:43:58 pm »
Evenings guys,

Looking at buying a set of Givi E21s and side racks off a fella on here, and had a couple questions about them? In the photo he's sent me, the indicators have been relocated up onto the topbox rack, and then there's a metal brace going between the pannier racks through the indicator holes? I'm sure I've seen givi panniers on bikes for sale though with the indicators in the usual place, so is this back brace not really needed, or is it a different type of rack or something?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / ZX9R Clutch lever
« on: 28 January 2013, 02:24:35 am »
Well had this on for a couple days now, and have only just noticed something about it today.
The original switch on the FZS was a two pin one, and the Kwak one is a 3 pin - luckily you can still get the wiring connector on the Fzs loom to attach to the kwak switch, and i didn';t think anything of it as the switch still cut out the sidestand if it was down and the bike was put into gear.
However, what i noticed today was that you actually have to put the bike into neutral to start it, rather than just squeezing the clutch in and hitting the button.
How did other people get around this, or did you more live with it?

Looks good that stuff, found the S3 case so asked a seller on ebay for a price for the case, a handlebar M8 mount and a connecting arm to link the two together - should be just what I'm after once I know how long I need the arm to be!

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Knee down?
« on: 25 January 2013, 01:23:55 am »
Funnily enough on my old bike (ZX9R) I never managed it deliberately, it was jacked up a fair way and I'm not massively tall, so I couldn't reach it (or at least wasn't happy leaning the bike over as far as I was).
That said, coming around a roundabout once, I was hanging off in the wet, and the arse end slid out on me - no idea what from, but I suspect a patch of diesel. Because my knee was out, and kinda locked, I managed to catch the bike on my knee and hold it up for a bit until the rear wheel regained contact (sounds heroic, it was completely by chance).
Even if it did scare the crap out of me doing it, if I hadn't been hanging off in the "knee down" type position, I would've gone straight into the floor instead of coming off fine, albeit it with a fair few grey hairs!

For Sale & Wanted / Re: fazer 1000 clocks
« on: 24 January 2013, 06:05:42 pm »
How many miles on them mate?
I want to fit a multiguage at some point, might be easier to just wire it up to a set of clocks off the bike rather than have to be without transport whilst i do it!

883
I'd go for PR3s. They feel "better" all round, it's particularly noticable in the wet though. They'll last longer than the 2s as well, so money wise it's not different over the long term, you just get more stickiness for your money IMO.

Personally, I'm looking forward to trying out the new Bridgestone coming out in a few months, the 23 replacement :)

Thanks - but they are Silicone and I dont want Silicone hoses.

Tom

Any reason why not mate? Think you might struggle to find a specific fazer kit to be honest apart from Yamaha's own - all the aftermarket ones are silicon as far as I'm aware!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Temperature & Clutch Lever?
« on: 21 January 2013, 07:35:31 pm »
Well got myself a ZX9R clutch lever and perch on the way to sort out the clutch.

Do rather like the idea of getting a multiguage too, read how to wire it up and it doesn't look too bad - just gotta get some pennies saved up now!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Lowering the bars
« on: 20 January 2013, 08:38:41 pm »
After something to lower the bars on my FZS1000, it's got what I'm 99.9999%sure are renthal ultralows on at the moment, and I still seem to be sitting far too upright compared to what I'm used to!
Had a search and it didn't come up with a lot of info for the 1000 other than the GTYR lowering kit, which is bloody expensive new!
Was wondering if there were any other commonly used options available to lower the bars? Ideal situation would be a set of clipons to be honest, if anyone has ever experiemented with those?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Is my bike getting good MPG
« on: 19 January 2013, 01:46:52 am »
Whilst your on a restricted licence I'd leave the k&N out. If you get stopped or heaven forbid are in an accident and they find out about the air filter being a performance upgrade, your in a world of pain from both the law and the insurance company.

Basically your airfilter could in theory take you over the 33bhp limit, which invalidates your insurance, which means at the roadside your bike gets siezed, you also get 6 points/£200 fine, and taken to court for driving other than in accordance with a licence where another 3 points minimum and another fine. That's your licence gone. Then you have to get someone to insure your bike, pay the £150 recovery cost, and the £15-£20 per day storage costs.

Don't put performance upgrades on a resticted bike, it just ain't worth it!!. Standard filters are just as good for now.
Can't see that happening, the restrictions block off the carb inlets, so blocking the amount of air/fuel mixture that goes into the carbs, changing the filters barely going to change that - just might make it run a fraction leaner in the revs that the restriction allows. BIke could theoretically be siezed at the side of the road, but only reason that's going to happen is if the police a.) know that you should be on a restricted license, and the vast majority don't know about that, and b.) have reason to suspect your bike isn't restricted, which is only going to be the case if you blow past them at somethig like 120mph +
FWIW, I've had K&N's in all my bikes as they usually give a little more power when the jettings altered to suit. Only one I took it back out of was my ZX9R, as it played up with the ram air on it.
I also had a restricted bike which the restrictors fell out of after about 6 months, had a non-fault accident and they didn't even check. Had a bunch of mates do the exact same thing, and nothings ever happened to them either!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: speed triple comparison
« on: 18 January 2013, 08:46:11 pm »
Give it a couple years and Yamaha will have made their cross plane crank triple engine, put in in a sportsbike, and then taken it out and stuck it in a Fazer-esque machine. Voila, triple engined fazer :)

General / Re: what a bunch of bankers !
« on: 18 January 2013, 08:41:03 pm »
my only comment is that we the people  voted this government in , with very short sighted intentions. Maybe after 4 yrs of tory get the rich richer quick policies, the electorate will take a more balanced view at next election. That is what will count , not amusing ditties like this.
If the torys ever get a majority ...welcome back victorian levels of poverty and  austerity for sure, it will make this government seem generous.

Well funnily enough the government can't just sit on a deficit, it's got to either increase taxation, or increase austerity measures - so either way things are gonna be tight for years to come!

General / Re: Stale fuel
« on: 18 January 2013, 08:16:09 pm »
And don't use the last liter or so, as it'll probably have a load of water in it, which will then result in you needing to strip down your fuel system to clean it out!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Alarmed Disc Lock?
« on: 16 January 2013, 11:05:15 pm »
Hey guys,
Was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for an alarmed disc lock to use on an FZS 1000?
I only really use it for the noise, carry around a big chain to anchor the bike down. Bought an Xena XX14, and it didn't fit on the Fazer discs unfortunately, so that's going to be returned, and I need to find something else!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Temperature & Clutch Lever?
« on: 16 January 2013, 04:50:58 pm »
Is there a temperature gauge somewhere on the FZS 1000 that I just can't see, or is knowing when the bike is warmed up just a bit of a hit and miss affair? Way I'm doing it at the moment is to just pull the clutch lever in and see what the revs are at, trying to keep it at about 1500 for about 5 minutes and then knocking it down?

Also, is there a clutch lever off another bike that will fit the FZS, but be adjustable like the brake lever? It seems abnormally far away, and I find I'm having to pull it with my fingertips, rather than my fingers, which I don't like at all! Don't really want a set of aftermarket levers though at the moment!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / New Bike :D
« on: 13 January 2013, 02:09:49 pm »
Well went for what was only supposed to be a viewing and a test ride today, and ended up coming away with a new bike big grin
It's a 2003 Yamaha FZS 1000 Fazer in silver, had noticed it on eBay as being slightly cheaper than the rest, with a bunch of mods fitted that I'd have done anyway, and advertised as being in excellent condition.
Turned up, and the bike was totally mint, all the consummables were great, it had a full service history and all the paperwork checked out.
Took it for a test ride, and was very impressed with it. It's bloody cold out so I can't really hammer it around yet (and the upright riding position seems REALLY weird at the moment), but the engine feels very strong at low revs indeed, to the point where if I opened the throttle quite quickly at about 3k revs, it would spin up continuously. You know it's probably not too bad when you're in 6th at 30mph and it's pulling strongly! Brakes are also very good, which actually gave me a bit of a fright to start with as I was worrying I was going to lock them up! Only bit I reckon I made need to sort is the suspension, on the very tentative ride today I had it seemed "right", which probably means when I want to start pushing it, it'll seem a bit bouncy.
Not the colour I wanted, but at the price, condition and with the extras, I just couldn't turn it down!

Even had a bit of a result with adding it onto my insurance, initial quotes I had were about £160 to add on an 03 model. Rang up Carole Nash and asked about adding it on, and then asked about modifications. It's not got a LOT of mods on it at the moment, but as the insurance company didn't pay out for the last lot as I hadn't declared them, I decided I was going to declare everything I could possibly do to it, just so when it DOES get done, it'll be properly covered. Weirdly, adding all the modifications to it dropped it to £125, and I managed to get my £500 excess protection insurance thrown in for free big grin

Just ordered myself an alarmed disc lock, need to get some heated grips sorted too as my hands are fecking cold (never realised quite how effective the 9's fairing was at helping with that!) and then need to sort out a topbox, and then I'm done for now smile

So now I've got it, are there any jobs I should do to it that'd help improve it? And what would modifications would people recommend?

Guess I asked for that  :lol

I managed to leave out one key word, "caliper". What's the difference between the 1000 rear caliper, and the 600 rear caliper? I've seen a load of people asking for the 1000 ones?

Thanks for letting us know your not interested then

Hey Gal, I sent Trev an email asking a few questions about his bike, but decided although it does look a cracker, he wants a bit too much for what I'd be willing to pay for a yellow one I'm afraid!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Anyone Looking to Sell?
« on: 11 January 2013, 01:47:44 am »
Well guys, finally had my insurance payout come through, so looking to buy an FZS. Was just wondering if there was anyone in here that was thinking about selling? I've had a nose at all the colour schemes now and decided I can't live with either a yellow or a blue one - I don't like the colour blue for some reason, and I find the yellow one just too loud!
As said before in my wanted thread, the ideal colour scheme would be the black/red later models, but i also quite like the gunmetal grey of the later ones too. Would much prefer a black painted engined bike if possible :). Also willing to pay more for extras that I'd be wanting on the bike anyway (aftermarket shock, fork work, ivanising and a topbox are the main priorities).
So, who's up for selling?  :D
