Only go there if you're sure you can get what you want without needing the assistance of the monkeys that work there.

I go in there sometimes, but only because I have a trade card and get things cheap.  £7 worth of bulbs (only four side light bulbs  :eek  ) for 98p!

Started first push of the button today  :D   So looks like it was water in something, possibly side stand switch or killswitch maybe?  I'll go over all the joins with contact cleaner tonight and check plug caps are down firmly, flap things are in the right place etc.

It has now however developed a chirping noise on overrun... I think it's something to do with the clutch mechanism inside the sprocket cover (I had that off yesterday to check out the nut) so need to take that off again and stick a bit of new grease in it.

The side stand stops it cranking though doesn't it?

Might just be water in the coil(s?) from the rain this morning maybe?  I'll see how it starts in the morning...

Had another problem develop this afternoon.  Coming home from work I filled up with petrol, same petrol station as usual (same pump even) but when I went to restart the bike just cranked over and over and didn't want to fire.  Tried a few times, then waited a minute and tried again, more cranking, then it fired up the instant I pressed the button!  Remainder of the journey (another 45 miles ish) it was fine.  When I got home I switched it off and tried starting again and it did the same thing.  It'll just randomly start working and when it does it fires up straight away.  Big backfire out of the exhaust on two occasions but that's just down to all the fuel going through it and not being burnt off I guess.

To add to this, I went for a quick run down the road and when I was turning round in a layby, sitting still in neutral it just conked out - not like a stall, but like I'd turned the ignition off.  Once I'd got it going again it rode home perfectly, plenty of power, no missing or anything.

Now this definitely sounds electrical to me, but what could it be?  It was wet this morning, but it was wet last week and had no issues then... anyone got any ideas?  Need it for work and I can't really afford to have it off the road for any amount of time  :(

Ta very much  :D

I thought it might be cam chain (hence doing the tensioner), I'll get some bits in and see ifI can sort it out next weekend.  I've done rebuilds and cambelts on cars before so realise how important it is to get it right, I'll probably go for a split chain if they're just as good as the non-split type.  Thanks for the help  ;)

Is there a step-by-step guide anywhere on how to replace it?  Don't really fancy paying £60+ per hour when I can do it myself...
If it doesn't quieten down this week I'll get a replacement and do it next weekend.

I have reset the cam chain tensioner - it was sticking out about half way and moved in/out smoothly.  Heard it ratched back out when I put the spring/bolt back in.
How big a job is it to change the cam chain?  Is that at a stage where it needs to be done or is it just irritating?

Hi guys, calling on your technical knowledge here... My bike has started ticking, any idea what it is?  This is from stone cold and it stays there even when hot.

Any idea?
Ta very much  :)

Please excuse the horrible red bits, the last owner decided to paint bits of it and now I have to work out how to strip it without taking all the other paint off  :rolleyes

If your system can handle SATA, I'd consider getting an OCZ Solid State Drive, installing your OS onto that and then turning your whole existing drive over to storage.

It'll also give you faster boot times :)
Much faster than a traditional hard disk, but would personally go for Crucial M4.  Had lots of OCZ Vertex 2 drives (which I realise are old now) and had lots of failures and incompatibilities with various machines.  M4s have been goos as gold.

i think the pics says it all..........spend a few more quid and get an older but more reliable jap job. its false economy in the long run. I get umpteen people calling me everyday asking me to do work on them. wont touch them. everything is made of toffee and parts ( if available) last weeks if at all. but its your money and your choice.
There was an 05 plate CG125 for £500 that I'd arranged to go and see... on the way home, just prior to seeing it, got a text message from the seller saying it'd just sold  :'(  This was second choice and I only went for it because it was so cheap and only needed for a couple of weeks.  Had it been long term I'd have waited and picked up something more reliable.

Oh and for the record mine was a Huoniao.  And no, I don't know how to pronounce it  :look

Collets were still there - cam cover came off first and the top end all looked ok until the head came off...

Maybe the valve has stuck or something and got a smack from the piston, it was going flat out at the time for a while although I don't know what revs as the rev counter didn't work...

Not sure on the condition of the bore but I'd guess the block was scrap.  Head was definitely scrap.  Sump will have been full of bits of piston so that may well have screwed the gearbox and clutch... It's possible that it would've been fixable but would've cost more than it was worth.  Bloke that bought it had a spare engine lying about so is going to fit that and then possibly sell it on.

As for the cause of failure, possible overheating caused by oil pump failure, possibly just not up to the job of 40+ minutes flat out down the A12 twice a day...

Yep, piston has a big hole melted in it.  Exhaust valve has also melted and the end of the plug is too.  We took the exhausts off to load it onto the trailer and they rattled - turned them over and bits of metal fell out  :lol

Yep, I never expected to keep it for more than a few weeks but it turns out that was a bit optimistic.  £100 for a week and a half practice and commuting wasn't so bad, I passed my mod 2 the day after anyway so picked up the Fazer from my friends house (was in his garage til I passed) and wouldn't go back  :D

Did my mod 2 test two weeks ago now, just prior to that I'd bought a cheapo (£200) 125cc bike to practice on and get into work for a week.  The night before my test this POS died on the A12 at about midnight - just suddenly lost all power and then had no compression on the starter.

Anyway, a couple of days ago I took the head off to see the damage, think I got the job done pretty well  :rollin   Thought you guys might be interested in the pictures of the damage done...

Bear in mind that this bike was registered in July 2010 and had under 7500 miles on the clock  :eek   On the plus side I sold it for £100 so got half my money back  :D

Those are some good videos, see that sort of driving on a daily basis unfortunately  :rolleyes

How does that cam attach to your lid and how long do you get out of a charge?  Thinking of getting one but don't want to spend hundreds...

Get bits from a breaker/ebay, will be far cheaper than going to a dealer.

I use GetDataBack for data recovery.  You'll be ok as long as Windows can still see the disk - if it's physically damaged and Windows won't see it then you're out of luck :(

Rode in on my POS 125 (not done my mod 2 yet so can't ride the Fazer yet :'( ) today.  If you noticed a brown streak from Liverpool street up the A11 I'll apologise now, that was probably me  :eek :lol

Lawrence are you interested in selling that "stupid streetfighter" headlamp?   :)
Yes, got all the bits except two bolts that I re-used in fitting the faring.  I've also got the bar end mirrors if you're interested  ;)
PM me if you're interested.
