So I've driven around  3500km (2000 miles) since my oil change and I noticed that the red oil lamp briefly lit up while giving the bike the beans. It lit up just for a split second.

Later I stopped at a parking lot, put it on the center stand and waiter ~10 minutes. I could barely see the oil in the glass.

How much is between max/min in the sight glass and is it normal for the FZS to burn oil?

Quick question. How easily should the front wheel spin? Mine seems to "drag" against the brakes.
For instance, should it be able to spin one turn freely? Half? Quarter?

Just a thought re your axle. Are you sure the fork legs are in correct position? If not ,then you can slightly loosen clamp bolts on upper & lower yokes and move fork legs into alignment. Dont forget to retighten bolts to correct torque setting.
PS wheel spacer goes on offside (right hand side) of bike. The speedo sensor locates left hand side.

I'll double check the fork legs any way.

Yes, I know the wheel spacer goes on the right hand side of the bike. But it is possible to have the flange of the spacer within the seal or outside. It's probably fine either way.

Looking at this picture it's obvious that the spacer should not be in there by default. Seems like the other owner got it wrong. I've ordered a new  axle wheel bolt and will be refitting it as soon as I get it. I'll just take the time and see if I can fix the seal too without damaging it.

Wondering though, when I see the schematics the spacer (#8) on the right hand side should be the other way around?
With the flange towards the outside?

When I took the wheel off I noticed the spacer was "inside" the seal. So I just put it back together the way it came out. Any thoughts?

Changed the bearings yesterday, they were worn out and cranky. No more chirping :)

Also the front wheel axle bolt was slightly bend  at the left side, hard to get in and out! I'll change it for a new straight one. Seems like the bike got a bit of a tumble on it's left side.

Thanks. I'll see to change it right away. Are there any definitive tests I can do to pinpoint it?

FZS600 Fazer / Chirping / squealing ?
« on: 04 July 2016, 01:26:22 pm »
While driving my last trip I noticed an intermittent chirping / squealing at around 45mph. It's not connected to the engine revs but it seems to be speed dependent. I can't hear it above 55 and not under 35(ish). It's hard to pinpoint the sound as there's so much wind noise. But it does seem to come from the front/beneath me.

Has anyone else had this sound? Wheel bearings? Brakes? I'm not sure, I can't find any noise when turning the wheels by hand at standstill.

Agreed it would have been better to do the filter and plugs beforehand, but my fingers were tingling to try it out and I didn't have a new filter at hand.

I got them much closer than they were initially.

TPS was correct both before and after.

86
So I hooked up CarbTune and calibrated as best I could. It's running much smoother now.

However, I saw that the first tube was much more volatile than the three others. The bike has some dips and surges when idling around 1150-1250, not a lot though.
Is this normal behavior? Should it be dead stable when idling?

To do:
 - Change spark plugs
 - Check/change air filter

Blatantly says only use Dot 4 on the master cylinder cap, and the brakes are pretty awesome enough using that, so I don't see why you'd need to try anything else?
It's not exactly expensive stuff, just get a litre so you can bleed the brakes properly, always better to have too much than not enough.

Yes dot 4, just wondering if anyone has tried the dot 5.1 mod and how've they got on with it?

Someone has tried it 'cos I read it on here somewhere in the last few days, but not sure who it was?

Found him  :)

The guy from the other thread here :)
The brakes are working 100%, no problems with DOT 5.1 so far (800km). I'd like a little more bite from the brakes, but thats probably just worn out pads.

I had no real reason to use 5.1 over DOT 4. Just wanted to try it out.

« on: 25 May 2016, 09:23:31 pm »
Just changed mine to Castrol Edge Power 1 10w-40 Semi synth. It feels smoother now (placebo?)

The last oil change was done 1500km ago, but I don't know how much time has passed, so I decided to do it anyway since it was the previous owner who did the last one.

However, the oil filter was perfect and OEM Yamaha. The one I got in the kit was a generic Snell (but Hiflofiltro package). Is Yamaha OEM filter better than the Hiflofiltro/Snell filter?

This didn't turn out too bad! :D

Should paint the top box too. It's my daily commuter so I need the box, it's an elementary part of the bike :)

This won't be too bad :)
Regarding the fitting, it really just looks like the bracket was bent a small amount at the base, very hard to see but it made a huge difference at the end!

Thanks for answering my simple newbie questions.

I got an answer from the ebay seller but there were no manual for the fairings, no brackets either which I found weird...

They were designed for a stock bike ie standard exhaust you have a stainless aftermarket one is the lowers or mounts catching on it?
Exhaust does not interfere with the fairing.

I know Mark Lawrence bought that same kit and painted it etc, you'll get him mainly on the fb foc-u forum, you could maybe message him and ask.

I sent him a message, but I don't know if he wants to respond to strangers  :b

They will go on! I'll just keep at it until something works. I'll post the solution whenever I do.

Being an owner of a BMW E39 I'm so used to every single problem being documented  :lol

Unfortunately that's not possible. One side there is a 10mm~  hole for the frame screw and the other there are threads for the M6-screws.

I found the kit on ebay and sent the seller a message. Hoping for a response even though I didn't buy it from them directly.

I would be afraid of fitting the bracket to the side fairing and then tightenting. I needed to use a lot of force to even get it close...
The angle seems off. I was expecting it to sit flush against the metal. Right now it seems more like 30-40 degrees off.

Both brackets are identical, I thought perhaps one had been bent if the bike had fallen over or something...

There might be something I'm missing, or not understanding... But it really seems straight forward.

However! There are two different spacers on the rubber mounting.
There are one type that sits flush with the rubber (seen in picture above), and another that is around 1cm long. The 1cm long fits exactly and perfectly in the radiator position, so I really doubt I should move that to this position.

When I bought the bike I got some extra side fairings. They were in pretty rough shape so I sanded them down, filled in the gaps and gave it a (poor) paint job.

This is how it's supposed to look:

I do not have any part number, the kit is probably as old as the bike and the previous owner is unavailable so I'm trying my luck with you guys.

It's fitted with five holes, one at the top fairing, one on the radiator, one on the frame next to the exhausts and one on lower frame.
I got four of 5 holes mounted, but the one next to the exhaust is giving me a great deal of trouble.

Try as I might I could only get it within 1cm. I don't believe I'm supposed to use that much force to fit something, I must be doing something wrong.

This is how the brackets look:

Any help is appreciated.

So I checked and adjusted the chain yesterday. I had to use some rust remover to get it open. In this process I got some of it on the tire along with some other lubricants.
I'm a bit paranoid when it comes to slippery tires, what is the best way to clean a rear wheel tire? I've seen some specialized expensive cleaners in the shop, but what's the cheap method? :)

That sounds a lot like the new practice after people starting buying from online dealers.
Especially in Norway they charge ludicrous amounts if you don't buy the wheels from them.

98
I've looked alot of pictures now of the original can and compared it mine. I am very certain that the can is original but repainted, it has the YAMAHA 5DM-markings, as do the strap.

The major difference is that because of the rubber I have to fit the strap on both sides of the mounting bracket on the passanger foot peg. It will never fit if I try to force it together. I see on the pictures of the original that the strap is flush with itself.

Is there a way to tighten the gear changes on the bike? I drove my brothers Thuncerace (not the thundercat), and though I know it's a totally different bike, it was just so much smoother between the gears. Is there a way to make the gears more "precice" when changing?

What is this rear wheel hugger? Does it have any practical applications or just for the looks? (Mine does not have it)

Right! The swing arm moves as it should then, no sideway movement :) As long as there's not a lot of pressure on the right passenger foot peg which might cause it to be pressed inward, everything should be fine.
Will have to double-check with a passenger + load.

Crazy story :S
