Personally, if i wanted to keep a low budget then i'd consider 2nd hand original discs.

The discs seem pretty straight, well under 1mm of wobble. And then there's no guarantee that 2nd hand discs are any straighter.

You can get brand new Ferodo discs for £108 each from M&P.

And this is why i don't want to spend on new discs.

Always thought discs were way too thin to be "straightened"?
Any warping of a disc will keep pushing your pads apart so your initial grab at the lever would feel unresponsive.
Other than that it can take a few goes at bleeding before getting them sharp.

Initially; I thought the discs were bent when i got the bike, turned out to be bent rotors, which i had straightened.

  • Initially; I had the standard brake hoses, and the brakes were OK-ish.
  • Then i got the hoses upgraded to braided and the brakes were crap.
  • Investigation found the warped rotors, which were then fixed and the brakes were much better.
  • Then i had a line leak on the left side so had to have the banjo replaced
  • Now my brakes feel soft.
Likely as you suggest, and i suspect: They probably just need another bleed, though i don't expect to get them up to 100% without spending silly money on rotors, discs, callipers etc... but i'll never do that. Just not worth it considering the initial value and that it's a cat C, and the likely resale value -vs- investment.

« on: 17 November 2014, 02:41:37 pm »
Recently had a banjo fitting replaced due to a small leak. Brakes were bled, but now feel much less effective than before.
Granted; They were never at 100% as the rotors were bent before i got it. They were straightened out, which sorted as much deformation in the discs as possible, and the brakes were good enough.

All i can think of is that they might need re-bleeding.

Thoughts?

Resolved
Leak on right side due to worn washers.
Now replaced, re-bled at all points and back to where they were (which wasn't 100%, and wont be unless i buy new discs).

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Slow punctures - how slow is 'slow'?

I have a similar leak in my rear (hurr hurr).
About 5psi/week when it's warmer out, but with the weather like it is, it's down to about 1.5-2psi/week

Might not be a puncture in my case, could just be that the tyre isn't sitting right on the wheel.

I coated it in ACS.
It's going to be SO satisfying to give it a very detailed clean come the end of February.
Then it might be time to finish the bike.

I made this for it. But the missus was snoozing on the lounge and probably wouldn't have liked being rocked by bike noise downstairs so I didn't actually use it yet :(

You made underfloor heating?

Had my steering looked at. Felt way too light. Turned out to be a loose bearing.
All fixed now. Not scary any more.

If you do change fork oil, go for 15w instead of standard 10w oil, you will notice a big improvement.

I shall keep that in mind.

Got it looked at. Bearing was loose. Seems to have fixed it.

Could be the headstock bearing. If you hold the front brake on and give the bars a good seeing too like they've just stolen your lunch money is there any up and down movement,  looseness or clicking sounds?

I shall check that tomorrow.
I've been wanting to put it through a mock-MOT anyway, seems like a good opportunity.

  • Rear pre-load is set at standard (though it could probably do with adjusting because i'm a tubby bastard at 16.5st)
  • Rear pressure wasn't low at last check and i still had the problem, but i will check it again, as i do have a very slow 5psi/week puncture/leak. Probably needs putting back on properly.
  • Fork oil? I'll certainly bring that up tomorrow.

FZS600 Fazer / [Technical] Steering feeling very light [Solved]
« on: 06 November 2014, 07:15:29 pm »
Solved.
Had it looked at. It was a loose bearing.

Ahoy.

Over the last week or so, my steering has felt way too light.
I've checked the tyre pressures, and they're correct. I've yet to take it in for a once-over at the garage, though.

It could be the position/angle of the bars as i have Renthals (756) on a 1 inch riser set, and they're rotated back a touch for comfort, but the lightness in the steering seems to have only popped-up recently, and i've had the bars/bike for just over 5 months now. Certainly feels lighter with left turns compared to right, which leads me to think it might be a bearing issue.

I think i'm looking to get some pointers on areas to check.

I rode for 2 hours in city traffic, although it doesn't matter as long as I am on the bike :)
And did something crative

5 out of 10.
Find a larger pumpkin, hollow, cut visor hole, fit actual visor, wear as helmet for a photo. Then you may claim the remaining 5 points*
*depending on quality of pumpkin helmet.

Today i attempted to adjust left switch position only to find the screws keep rounding. I'll need to fix that.
Also discovered my clutch cable is badly frayed. Waiting on a replacement.
Also also discovered the braided line on the left front calliper has sprung a leak of ... indeterminate enthusiasm, so i cleaned it up and will be keeping an eye on it. Bolt seemed tight, just hoping it won't require a new line.

You can easily fit an external mic to the SJ4000 as well, looks like a bargain....might even get one for my 20 miles a day commute.

Indeed. And by the same token; I could get a hole cut in the case to allow a USB connector in there for power.

Not all 'class 10's' are the same
Just don't get one off ebay as it's more than likely a fake with no where near the advertised capacity or write speed

Just another reason i don't like ebay all that much.
Would prefer to use Amazon or even a real shop, if i must... Eww.

That SJ4000 does seem to be in the lead at the moment, maybe the £99 GoPro Hero if i can manage to afford it (not very likely).

I have a Drift HD, which is just out of the budget, BUT i picked up two refurb Drift HD170 Stealth cameras from Actioncameras.co.uk. They were £50 each and when one of them packed up, they quickly sent a replacement.

It has: 1080p at 120 degree field of view (30fps)
            720p at 170 degree FOV (30fps)
and       720p    --   "  --            (60 fps)

The lens is rotatable, the batteries and mounts are interchangeable with my Drift HD (Which gives you a viable upgrade path without buying all new accessories). You can get a Mic adapter from ebay for about a fiver that will allow you to connect any 3.5mm jacked Microphone.

Also the extended life batteries are easy to come by and cheap (£15) because Drift use rebranded Fuji batteries so every man and his dog makes a copy.

I used the Stealths on my latest trip to Europe. ALL of the rear views and supplementary views are the Stealth cameras.

They have better colour saturation than the first camera I got which was basically a Polaroid XS100 in a different coloured shirt! Here's a video with that one:

As a starter though, it's not bad. But I really wanted the ability to have an external mic to capture my inane wafflings.

I'll certainly keep an eye out for one on buy it now, but never been a fan of bidding. Still don't fully trust ebay.
I think i'll be fine without a camera. All you'd hear is me swearing, and i'm not sure that me calling someone a "cock-faced shit-bastard" will really help my case should i actually end up in an accident.

I wasn't thinking about the extra cost of memory card!
No matter what cam you get the mem card is extremely important, I got a 32gb 50mbps one from currys for £15 or £20, the 50mbps speed is the important thing, anything less and you'll have errors recording at 1080 or a lower res with higher frames per second!

True. I wasn't going to skimp needlessly on the card. I do try to buy the fastest they can handle to avoid write-errors.
Currently looking at something along the lines of maybe a Samsung class 10 32GB card.

You're not after a gopro but the new budget model is £99,  comparing that price to the likes of the Chinese ones or action cams from the likes of aldi, for a bit more money you are getting a guaranteed quality product that has a proven track record.
It's a no brainer, they have been very clever with their pricing structure, and let's face it- the video quality it produces is better than their cameras that were £300 3 years ago, but that's advances in technology for you!

After digging through an arse-load of marketing crap, i finally found some specs for it. It seems pretty damn good for the money. Battery life is excellent in comparison to other similar devices which pretty much removes the need for me to run it off the bike battery, comes with a proper helmet mount, too.

Only problem is that i don't have £100, plus £15 for a memory card. Hence the £80 or less budget. But it's a possibility.

Again on the Mobius: Is it rain-proof enough or will i need the waterproof case? If yes: Does the case accept the charging cable?
