If you don't ride it often, take the battery off the bike when not in use? alarm obviously won't work, but bump/jump starting certainly doesn't help the life of your battery :)

(or get a trickle charger you can use with the battery on your bike)

Mine's Ivanated (full) and if I put the baffle in my exhaust it creates a 'bog down' point at about 5000rpm, so if you've got full ivans kit and still have stock exhaust or baffled aftermarket, that could be it..

Or it could be the exup  :lol

So has anyone had one of these large zoom, small sensor type cameras?

Talking to my family, my birthday's not until August, so I'll probably leave it for now and have another look closer to the time :)

Thanks for all the advice though :)
(by the way, new fav: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-S9100-Coolpix-Digital-Camera/dp/B004LRO72K/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1336494279&sr=1-1

Yes, it was one of the first ones recommended to me in this thread  :lol

Hmm, I wish Pitt, Unfortunately, I've just got a new battery (recommended on this site) which came fully charged.
I've been riding it every day (ish) since start of March... It seems fine now, and thinking about it, it sounded like it was struggling to start for a few days before, so maybe the charge just isn't quite enough to 'top up' the battery (only 10 miles to work :\ )

Unfortunately I don't have any money to put towards it, I'm saving all of it for when I'm out there :)

The problem I've got is that there's just so much choice in my price range..
I Think I've narrowed it down a bit, what does everyone think:

http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=oly_sp810uz&products=fujifilm_s4000&products=panasonic_dmczs8&products=canon_sx150is&sortDir=ascending

To be honest, I think I'll need the advanced zoom after the trip, my girlfriend (who I'm going with) has a panasonic FZ8 (coincidence??) which has the 12x zoom, and will be similar to any camera I get with regard to the other statistics. So I feel like the extra zoom will be useful to both of us, there's no point us taking identical cameras...

Sorry if it looks like I've completely ignored some advice here, I've taken it into account :)

Thanks again everyone, some really good ideas coming up

wow thanks for the detailed replies, they got a little bit technical but I think I got it :) (ISO how sensitive the sensor is to light? kinda like exposure?)
and noise means distortion in the picture? and also noise in terms of zooming whilst filming  :lol

Breadlord, I did deliberately go for a bridge type camera, because I felt that as I'll be keeping it as my main (and only) camera I'd be better off getting one I can play about with a bit. once in NZ, we'll buy a van anyway, so size/attractiveness isn't as much of an issue :) Although I agree it'll need to be hardy..
But as phil says, the 'sturdy' cameras are all mostly point and click which is annoying because it's a damn good idea...
I feel it might be worth getting one of those disposable waterproof cameras when we're out there, and keeping this camera as a main one?
I think the AA batteries are a good idea too, I've got some rechargeable ones somewhere and will just generally be more travel friendly :)

Thanks for all the replies, I've tried to do a few searches myself, but the sheer choice makes it very hard, especially as I don't know what I want!

Hi,
looking at the photo competition I can see there are some pretty good photographers on here :)
(flattery over, advice needed)  :lol

I'm looking for a new camera to take on a 6 month jaunt round New Zealand in September.
My mother and brother have agreed to buy me one for my birthday, at around £150.
I'm looking at this type of thing:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fujifilm-FinePix-S4000-Digital-Camera/dp/B004G8Q60K/ref=dp_cp_ob_ce_title_1
because I like the look of the ridiculous zoom on it.

Can someone that knows what all those little numbers and letters mean have a little look over it and let me know if there's any standout reason why I shouldn't get it please :)

Is it worth waiting (birthday isn't until early August) for other cameras to come down in price?

Any other recommendations within the price range?

Many thanks

Tom

Oh good, thanks both!

I only asked because I had some starting problems over the weekend (I commute on the bike now - no car) but after charging the battery there's no problem... I'll keep an eye on it.. but it wouldn't start as soon as I turned engine off, suggesting charging issues..
Thanks again

I changed that connector over christmas Mike, so hopefully it's not that!
The new connector was what I went to straight away, but I'm getting nil resistance over all of them, (measuring from the wires) and it's not getting hot or anything so as far as I can tell, the connectors are good :\

Hi,
Another electricity related question...
I've read in my haynes manual (and on here) that my voltage across the battery terminals at 5000rpm should be about 14.5v
It's only 13.5v :( I've checked all the wires and connections that I can see.
Using the guide in the Haynes manual, I've tested the alternator and the resistance is slightly higher than it should be across all the connections but that's the only issue I could see. Would this account for the lower voltage?
My fazer is the 04 one, so lights are on with the engine, would this drop the voltage to 13.5v?

Thanks everyone, google hasn't thrown up anything, I reckon this site's saved me a good amount of money (and blood pressure)

aye, as in south coast, bottom-right-of-the-country Hastings :)

I'll be going assuming it's not raining (it's a drought though, so no chance of that)

If you are lucky enough to buy a new bike, get the dealer to fit all the add-ons you might like.

All my Fazer add-ons were done at purchase and can be legitimately claimed for.

Friend of mine had £2000 taken of his car claim because it had alloy wheels as standard from the dealer (insurance told him it was added extra)
so always check first.

I tried listing all my mods, premium went from £250 to £1500... And that's for the 'non performance' things such as heated grips and crash bars..
Probably because I'm 22...

Dad had one, loved it, he moved up from an FJ.

Only thing I would say is look for a bike that's been serviced by Phill Hacker of the FJR owners club.
Many a picture I've seen of an FJR with completely seized rear linkage, after being greased at a dealer full service (part of the service to do this)

Hope that helps :)

Check your insurance, some say it's void if you've got an advisory you haven't rectified (think I read that on an MOT certificate)

another +1 for Sidi, couldn't say what they're called, but have goretex in them and never leaked (in scottish torrential rain)
Although I also have trousers down over the tops, so only bottom open to the elements

Hey Simon,
Nothing to do with your problem, but I changed my fork oil last year as a total newbie :)
That link is invaluble and I also looked up a few videos on the internet which helped :)

If I can do it, you certainly can

Thanks, I thought it was both, I found out because I didn't think it was as bright, whilst holding the pass button, I switched full beam on and it got brighter to the left (I think) side...

Thanks again :)
