Introduction / Re: FZS 600 suspension upgrade
« on: 10 April 2017, 08:33:20 pm »
Thanks for the info Tommy, it looks like I've got some decisions to make. My main problem is the harsh feeling when I'm riding along bumpy roads. Backing off the preload helps the harshness but leaves the forks a bit squidgy. I'm looking for a comfortable controlled ride, rather than track day handling. I'm trying to decide whether to go for emulators and linear springs or progressives and 15W oil. At 85 quid, Hagon progressive springs are obviously the cheaper option but is it money down the drain? Maybe try them first and see how they are and if I'm not happy I flog 'em for whatever I can get for them and go down the emulator route. Then to sort out the back end but I feel the front is worse than the back at the moment. Any opinions would be gratefully received.

What is it about snakes and spiders? The number of people who hate either or both is incredible. My wife is terrified of spiders but has a western hog nose snake as a pet, I've had various pet snakes over the years and have no problem with spiders and would never deliberately kill one but wouldn't really want a pet one. My big hate is wasps, evil nasty little bastards with a bad attitude that sting for fun.

Hmmm.... I think it's lost something aesthetically, i.e. It looks foccin' awful :lol   and as you're hurtling along at full racing snake speed, the noise is still going out behind you Not to mention what it's doing to your back pressures, added to the 180° bend in the pipe you may end up with running issues.

It don't think it matters how loud it is, they won't hear it if you're behind them or travelling towards them cos the noise comes out the back of the bike. Besides which they're likely to have their windows closed and the radio on. Dozy pedestrians may do but nowadays most of them have earphones in. I have  to admit it kind of amuses me the way motorcyclist talk about car drivers as a the enemy when 95% of us are also car drivers. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of bad drivers about but there are also plenty of idiot motorcyclists and most motorcycle accidents outside of built up areas involve no other vehicles.

Hi Tommy, just been reading your post regarding the YSS cartridge emulators and I am thinking of going down the same route. I was just wondering how the setting up was going. Have you managed to get it about right yet or are you still experimenting with oil weights and air gaps etc? Do you feel that it was the new springs or the emulators that made the biggest difference or the combination of the two? I ride two up regularly and wonder if I would be removing my caps and springs to fiddle with the emulators or just adjusting my preload on top of the forks. Any advice or set up tips would be appreciated, cheers

Where are you Sharpie? :) I'm about 65 miles from Skeggy in Nottinghamshire and I thought we were about as far as it got. Mind you being 65 miles from Skeggy ain't too bad, we could be a lot closer. :lol

Sorry Fazerider you're probably right, just reading on various forums, it seems the headers reach about 700°F. I'll check when I get my new toy :)

I have to admit I went the cheap, easy and available route. I wrapped a bit of insulating tape around the wound (temporarily)  Like Jules, I'll maybe treat it to a new piece in 8 or 9 years :D  If it works, it works.

Me too, don't know what it would be like in he heat of the UK :lol  but even if it stays at 40°C above ambient the engine covers could be sprayed in standard rattle can black with no problems couldn't they? I always thought  :faz s were cool, now I know :thumbup

Cheers Limax, A thermometer that only reads up to 550°C will be nowhere near high enough to read the temperature of the header pipes Sharpie, I think they get to about 800 -900°C +  The slightest amount a rust will have the paint flaking off. I wonder if something like Jenolite which converts the rust into iron tannate, would be worth trying before repainting it. I've just been looking at something called corroseal, it maybe worth googling.

FZS600 Fazer / Speedo started going mad.
« on: 07 April 2017, 11:01:18 pm »

I went out for a ride today and on the way home the speedo needle started waving around randomly, only slightly to begin with but by the time I got back it was thrashing about all over the place. When I checked it, the cable had been rubbing on the disc and had worn through to expose a tiny patch of wire that was shorting out on the disc, so I've rerouted it and I'm going to have to sort it properly tomorrow. I'll wrap some insulating tape round it for the time being but has anyone got any ideas for a more permanent repair without replacing the cable?

Thanks Jules, I'm ordering a -50 to 550°C thermometer in the next couple of days so I'll find out for sure. I'll let you know when I know, if you're interested. :thumbup

Agree with Darrsi, safer all round for the pillion to use the grab rail than to hang on to the rider. my OH prefers the grab rail behind her than the side mounted ones cos she can brace herself against acceleration and deceleration, we don't do top boxes, we use an oxford tail pack on the rear carrier which she doesn't lean on.

Gonna buy me an infra red thermometer, they're only about a tenner on Amazon. I can find out myself then.

Just out of interest, does anyone know what sort of maximum surface temperature the head and barrels reach on our engines?

Thanks for that Andy, I thought it looked possible but it's good to have confirmation. Is it fairly straightforward?

The seagulls maybe because he lives near a landfill site, could explain where he found the bike.
