Well that was quick; the TPS is at fault. Fortunately I've got a spare attached to my spare carbs, so all done now. Not sure what can have broken it with the engine out?

Thanks chaps, I suspect you are right as it's struggling to go into diagnostic mode, and just sits at 10k when it does. So I guess a dodgy connection somewhere... I'll have to get the circuit diagram out and get testing. This is the start though so thanks.

Mk1 FZS600  rev counter doesn't always shows the revs, it shows 3k, then the revs, then 0k.

I've had the engine out to drill out an exhaust stud and do a bit of painting, so I'm guessing I've not reconnected a wire, or pinched something. I can't find anything obvious though, and can't find anything in the manual. Can anyone help???

So I painted them, and it isn't sticking very well. They look a lot better than they did though, so still worth it I reckon.

You can take one side out, clean the stuff in there, put them back in and then pop the other side and clean under there.

Or, if you use clamps to get both sides of the piston near the middle, then you can usually get one side out then just jiggle the other side with your fingers to get all out at once. If they are very stiff then that won't work.

Yes I'm not sure the manufacturer quite understands the phrase 'stainless' tbf.

Thanks for the responses, that's 2 for paint and nowt for anything else, so painted it shall be:)

FZS600 Fazer / Stainless steel downpipes - maintainance?
« on: 08 October 2011, 07:20:05 pm »
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I can't find it. I have stainless downpipes on my FZS600 mark 1, and I let them get in a bit of a state. I've had them off and been getting the rust off with a whirly wire brush drill attachment. It's leaving them very tarnished still though and I'm wondering what to do. Stainless means stainless all the way through, not just a coating like chroming, right?

My options are:

Nowt, leave it skanky
sandpaper, but this takes material off
Paint - but I seem to remember that stainless doesn't take paint well?

Cheers if anyone can help.

deefer... right, I'll add that number for next time. This one I don't need now I think - for a bike which I've had to RIP :( Had a looksie at the recovery garage, thought it would be worth getting back on the road. In the cold light of day, and having had a good poke, it isn't.

Cheers pal.

I'm after one of these... I'm sure there's a proper name, but this is what I've decided to call it ;) I mean the cover on the engine on the right hand side, the one furthest forward that covers the gears that link the crankshaft to the starter motor.

If you've got one... price me up, ta.
