FZS600 Fazer / Re: sprocket nut
« on: 13 July 2015, 08:13:23 am »
To Darrsi

I've met and talked to quite a few Fazer owners over the last fourteen years, probably twenty or more.
But I've only met one Fazer owner that actually experienced the problem.

So from my point of view.... yes it's a known fault, but you're more likely to not have it, than have it.

And whilst there may be a long list of people that have experienced the fault.
There isn't a list of those that haven't
Because there's little point remarking on a fault the bike hasn't actually got.

Sadly I have to go to, work beckons, but the weather doesn't.
In any event, hope you have a good day

As far as I know you can only do it by:

1) Remove gear shift pedal
2) Remove sprocket cover
3) First try and rotate nut by hand
4) Get a  decent adjustable open ended spanner and fit it over the flats of the nut that aren't covered by the tab washer, and try and rotate it backwards and forwards.

If it doesn't move it's probably O.K.
If it does move it's probably not.

It's a known fault, I suppose you could call it a 'common fault', except it's not that common.
So you're bike can suffer from it, but it's more likely not to.

Yamaha do actually make a slightly bigger nut, to assuage the worry.
But in reality that's all it's likely to do, because it doesn't address the cause of the problem really.

Oddly enough I reckon you can probably solve the problem (assuming the threads aren't shagged) with the original nut if you want to.

This involves grinding off part of the the lip on the nut, so whilst it tightens on the shaft, it doesn't tighten against the sprocket, it simply fits flush with it. After all, there is no specific reason why it needs to 'tighten' against the sprocket, it only needs to prevent it moving laterally.

If memory serves some Honda sprockets used to be 'loose' in the 1970's.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: 48000 mile service
« on: 02 July 2015, 02:18:50 pm »
I checked the valve clearances around the 30,000 mile mark, they were o.k.
Didn't bother after that, and the bikes now done 80,000 and still runs fine.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: tapping sound when braking
« on: 30 June 2015, 06:17:36 am »
My bike does the exact same thing.

I reckon the cause is this

The pads rock on the centre pin.
Doesn't matter when the bikes not done many miles
But after many miles they gradually wear an indent in the brake caliper.

Best way to test it is put the front brake on, sit on the bike and rock it backwards and forwards.
You should get the clacking noise.

In any event don't worry about it.
Mine started doing it around the 40,000 - 50,000 mile mark
It's now done 80,000 miles, and the front brake still works fine.

To Fizzy Pies

If you don't make it round tonight I have some info for you.
The spare plug cap doesn't register any continuity.

So I stuck it on my bike and it worked fine.
Checked the one I took off my bike and that didn't register any continuity either.
My guess is, they're suppressed and don't have continuity when checked with a regular multimeter.

Thanks for beer offer, actually I'm a Guinness man, recent convert. In any event I ask for nothing.... you get a free brew, and if you like, a miniature bottle of my whiskey, that's my other hobby.

Strictly for medicinal purposes of course.

Ideally you need only a small amount of fuel in the tank (say a gallon), because the tank has to come off to balance the carbs.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Carb Balance...
« on: 27 May 2015, 06:07:57 pm »
Hmm different cylinder to my problemo.

I had (and likely still have) a problem with the No.4 spark plug thread.

With the exception of the first service from new I've serviced my bike ever since.

At around 50,000 miles, which was in 2009 I serviced it and changed the plugs.

When I took the No.4 cylinder plug out, a copper washer came with it.  The copper washer must have been located under the plug washer.

Now I'd done ever service apart from the first one, and I hadn't put it there, and I suspect they didn't change the plugs on the first service because it had only done either 1000km or a 1000 miles.  And if they did change the plugs why stick an extra copper washer under one of them?

In any event having taken the old plug out, I tried to screw the new one in.  No chance, none whatsoever.
I ended up re-tapping the plug hole with a old spark plug with grooves filed in the threads and all manner of aluminium shit came out as I did so.

Ultimately I managed to get a new plug in (an iridium one), and I decided not to change the plugs again.
Oddly enough, or not as the case maybe, the bike still runs o.k. and it's now six years and 30,000 miles later (it's now clocked 80,000 miles) and everything else is worn out anyway... so I guess it doesn't matter that much anymore.

As regards vac gauging your carbs, I've done it before for other Foccers, so why not you.

I'm still working (old bugger hanging on and trying to get to state pension age), so you'll have to give me a ring to see if I'm available.
The works no. is 01204 845382 and my mobile is 07813 439196.

I've got a set of vac gauges and a garage, but I live in Bolton.  Bit of a flog from Sheffield though.

Re: The spark plug. Is it on the No.4 (right hand road side cylinder)?

63
Have you checked the rear wheel to see if it's running true.

A mate of mine buckled both front and rear wheels on his Fazer, likely due to potholes.

He found someone to straighten them in the end.

'it's a motorbike, the cost is never minimal'
[/size]
Oddly enough in my case it kind of 'is', because the money is already spent.

I bought my Fazer in 2001, and then on an impulse bought another Y reg 2001 Fazer with a few hundred miles on the clock in 2003.
That Y reg Fazer is still sat in the garage with a few hundred miles on the clock posing as a shelf with a sheet.

I would be cannibalising a virtually new (unused) bike, which I suppose is a bit mad, but everything I need is there, and It's already paid for.

I realise that the virtually new Fazer, has a value now, and would be worthless at the end of the project, but I wouldn't actually have to go out and buy any parts.

I suppose I would probably have powder coating the frame, coolant, oil and brake fluid to pay for, and possibly tyres, (the tyres date back to 2001 like the bike).

O.K. it's not minimal, you're right.

I agree with you.

However I was talking to a guy today at my local M.O.T. station.  He was having his 1996 Fireblade done.
It's a carb engined bike, has a fuel filter but no pump.

And I thought; how much pressure can the pump actually be rated to?  If it pumped too hard surely it would overcome the gravity based pressure of the floats in the carb bowl.

I suppose there's only one way to find out.

Thanks

I've had the bike from new (Easter 2001), and I've kinda grown attached to it.
Never happened with any other bike, but it has with this one.

The cam chain worried me a bit until your post and Darrsi's post.

The bike really needs quite a few things:
1) Back shock absorber
2) Cam chain, and valve shims (never been touched)
3) Choke cable (broke)
4) Clutch cable (stretched)
5) Plug thread in the off-side cylinder (difficult to get a plug in and out) likely damaged threads.
6) Gear lever (worn needs re-bushing)
7) Seat's worn
 8) Paintwork to the tank is chipped
9) And all the usual suspects of course....most things are worn.

Maybe I should fully restore it..... New engine, new back shock, new everything.
Or am I really starting to loose what little sanity god blessed me with?

The funny thing is, whilst it would be very time consuming, but the cost would be minimal.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm guessing you don't need any special tools.
But do you need a hoist or a jack or something like that?

I've got a couple of mates who would give me a lift.

But I'd like to prevent the frame from getting scratched if I can, is there a method to avoid this?

The only other question I've got is:
Do you actually need a fuel pump or can you run the carbs direct from the tank via the fuel filter, just using gravity like bikes used to be?

The bikes done 80,000 miles.  I know the mileage is genuine because I've had the bike from new.

I was thinking of putting another engine in it, which is the easiest side to get the engine out?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Brake Caliper Pistons
« on: 05 May 2015, 11:59:03 am »
I once had a problem with both front discs binding on the pads.

There was no corrosion on the pistons, but the seals were not pulling the pistons back fully when I let off the brake.

The cure was new seals.

I reckon the cause was either toasting the front brake doing the Hard Knot & Wyrenose pass twice as fast as I could
Or
Possibly topping up the system using DOT3 brake fluid..... I think it was DOT3, or if it wasn't the wrong brake fluid.

Pretty sure the rattle noises coming from the engine are from the cam chain.

The questions are:

1) Does anyone know how long (miles) a cam chain lasts?

2) Has anyone had a cam chain fail, and if so what happened?

3) Has anyone had a cam chain jump a tooth and if so what happened?

The noise doesn't bother me, but I'm concerned that it may fail or jump a tooth.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: speedometer does not work...
« on: 18 January 2015, 10:37:56 am »
I've had:

1) Sensor lugs break inside the hub, it was down to me not aligning them correctly.

2) Disc rivets wear through wire if not clipped back properly.

3) I reckon if you get moisture in the big black connector box container under the tank you could get corrosion of the speedo connection point.

Other than that I don't know.
