Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / BROKEN SPARK PLUG !
« on: 18 December 2011, 04:36:48 pm »
Ayup, i noticed the other day when i started the bike up it ran erratic ie miss firing it had done this previously but seemed to clear it self once warm, so put it down to the fact im not using the bike and the fact its been in pieces, however this time it did not clear so i thought id remove plugs and 1 2 3 fine no 4 turned and turned without any resistance ie only finger tight and when i pulled the plug socket out this came out .

The plug leaving the thread in the head oh shit this is going to be expensive was my 1st thought, however i was thinking as there is no plug to tighten up, the thread should be easy to unwind unless its been cross-threaded! so i found a torx bit the same inner diameter as the plug thread left in the head and being a torx bit the edges on the bit was nice and sharp, so with torx on extension and the lightest tap with the hammer i felt it sit into the thread part and set about unwinding it out, it also came out with the little washer so i was well chuffed to say the least, i changed all the plugs with new iredium ones just to be 100% and its fine now however cant think why the plug snapped unless they was tightened to much by previous owner as i did not fit em and have never touched em  :\

well im one not to turn a bargain down and was offered 3 x 4ltr tubs castrol power 1 10w40 fully synthetic for £45 and 3 genuine yamaha filters for £15, i know some peeps say fully syn is waisted on the fazer however at that price i thought its too good to turn down, so ive got enougth for 4 oil changes .

All im aware is Auto oils that say "Energy Conserving" are not recommended for M/Cs' because they contain "friction modifiers" (additives) which can affect the operation and longevity of the "wet clutch" so If the oil does not say "energy conserving" than it would appear it acceptable for use in M/C, with wet clutch's

so do i do smi or full syn and 10w40 or 0w30 or 5w30 deffo confusing  :rolleyes

Oh i probably opened a can of worms with this question, however i noted some foccers buy car spec oil, and whilst ive been tinkering with cases and now need to fill the engine up with oil, i have afew options.

bike spec comp4 10-40 semi syn £39
bike spec comp4 10-40 fully syn £47

car spec mobil one 10-40 semi syn £29
car spec mobil one 0-40 fully syn £26 (special offer in halfaurds)

Now in the past ive always put comp4 semi syn however if i can buy the same product but cheaper than im game

so who puts what in the engine and would you recomm fully syn!! bikes done 12k

No probs:  http://www.customseats.co.uk/   melvyn hunter and his son ross do the foam mods and gelastic inserts and than they have someone make the cover, they do the work from home and your more than welcome to visit em, melvyn's a nice chap and likes a chat, turn around is 3 days approx well every seat ive had done is about that and ive had about 7 done, i  take my seat to em when im working that way and explain what i want and material, as the design and some of the material you see there is slightly different to the designs on there site but still cost the same.

carbon rad covers from Germany ordered tuesday arrived friday perfect fit and all the original bushes fit and the holes align 100%

Whilst i was at it i won some R1 NRC engine covers off evilbay the casings are rough finished and unpainted as stock so i got to work sanding the casings for a smooth finish than took a box of bits to have powder coated.

I brought a sargent seat last week however when it arrived and i fitted the seat the rear pillion seat is slightly wider and touched the rentec grab rail and in time i felt it would rub thro and tbh i felt it did not follow the lines of the rear cowling so i sent it back for a refund, and than sent my original seat to Coventry custom seats for a remake and a gelastic pad and the outcome i saved £££ and im very happy with melvyn's work yet again and turn around was 3 days

Lovely Mike, but Akrapovic AND Meccano?

That Meccano bracket you will never guess where its from!!!      electric garage door operator it connects the motor to the door so  heavy duty i cut it down put a bend in it and had it chromed, the akro sits higher than standard i cut across the link pipe and than closed the cut up by bending the pipe to desired position than tig welded it back up.

The seat was from P&P and i think it has gillies chain adjusters there for a r1 and i adapted to fit gen 1, the wheels was my 1st ever attempt at polishing and wish i never started it but once you do there aint no going back so had to finish what i started.

Bloody hell, how many years has he had that now looks exactly as the day i sold it him, and watched it ride out my street and me standing there thinking i should have not sold it  :'(   the gearing is stock apart from the rear as i think at the time thats the only size sprox i could get and going up on the rear the speedo read exactly as per the twat nav so is bang on i think.

taking into account i did spain on that bike, bilboa back home so he cant have done many miles .

strange how my old bikes turn up, i had 2004 blade before that gen1 and the other day that appeared on ebay with only 1000 miles added to it since i sold, and still immaculate, however that gen 1 was the start to the only bike ive owned 3 of so must be GOOD.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: RAN OUT OF PETROL MULTI GAUGE INCORRECT!!
« on: 04 December 2011, 12:59:05 am »
Ayup justy, i dont think the multi is at fault however i do think its more sensitive, i think the tank sender is/or was the problem maybe not set up correctly, the way its set now the tank float is mm from the base of the tank and there is still 1-litre left in the tank but the multi gauge now reads 0 so its probably about right now nxt step ill ride it till dry and see if it correctly set up  :\
The 2nd gen1 i had also had similar probs with the stock gauge misreading what was in the fuel tank and i had to set the sender up on that bike as well.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / RAN OUT OF PETROL MULTI GAUGE INCORRECT!!
« on: 03 December 2011, 09:33:59 pm »
Ayup chaps, yeah i ran out of petrol lucky for me it was as i was pushing it out my shed for its weekly clean even tho its not moved a wheel  :b  .  Nah than the multi gauge stated i had 2-litres left! when it took its last breath and died, so i set about seeing what the prob was and removed tank and sender it seemed the contacts on the sender was not sitting at its lowest point due to the plastic shroud it must have never been right so i fixed that and sender gauge now reads 0 for empty, now when i fitted everything back and filled tank i noted i had to put 2.5 litres in before it even started to read on the gauge, so i took sender out and bent sender to take into account the reading, when i installed the tank again i put a 1-litre in and nothing and so put 250ml in and the gauge registered this, i than ran bike up until gauge read 0 took tank off and drained fuel to see how much left in 1-litre was what came out, i also noted the sender is within mm from touching the tank base.

So my question does the tank hold fuel due to the shape that does not register on the fuel gauge.

Ive owned a GS and im sure JP will  ;)  value for money its by far the best i brought mine new in nov 2010 was the latest DOHC engine vastly improved over previous years much more GRUNT twas a pre-reg so good saving i did 2500 miles around germany in may for 9 days, and 3500 miles going to imola (italy) for 11 days end of sept-oct, and the odd weekend ride outs and i took all my bling off and just sold the bike all i lost was £600 over the price i brought it new i doubt there is any other bike that holds its value as good as a GS, it used some oil as all do till about 30k i thrashed it a real goodun and it never let me down once.

Minced with sportsbikes to and fro italy with ease as you find you can ride a GS faster in the twisties than a spastic rocket due to the confidence it gives  :rolleyes

I was going to Replace it with a Multistrada a full dancing n singing pikes peak or s-sport but they got serious issues no rear brakes, gearbox jumping out of gears, eletronics locking you out the list just goes on and on, so if any one is thinking about a used one think wisely no extended warranty can be taken unless you have owned from new :\ , (however bmw will extend the warranty on there bikes to any owner as long as bike serviced upto date and its not expensive for what you get) so tbh i dont think a MS is good value unless you prepared to loose a sh1t load of wonga, used MS bikes aint selling.

Have any of tyou tried light-weight wheels ?

Cable Tie has a set.  Very nice.

He says they make the bike a lot easier to wheel in and out of the shed and putting it on the centrestand for the weekly wash is a lot easier ...  :rollin :lol
YOU NO ME TOO WELL MIKE.  :rollin

These pvm race wheels are on my GEN-1 6'' rear 190 tyre! i brought these off ebay they had new pilot powers and wheels was as new and not used i paid £400  8)  BARGAIN .

These are the ultimate BST carbons off my bm that ive now sold and ive sold the wheels as well now for, they make a huge difference the rear is roughly 7-8lbs lighter than stock and the front about 5-6lbs

Just buy some light weight wheels and you will get many benefits not just weight saving either.

Less tyre wear giving more miles on a set of tyres due to the rim weight  inertia - Lower unsprung mass provides better tyre grip and reduced tyre wear - Quicker acceleration, faster cornering and later braking- much less rider fatigue- Quicker and more responsive handling . [/font]

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: What Screen ?
« on: 21 November 2011, 08:45:12 pm »
First impressions............
I LUV IT!  :lol
The only way I can recreate the noise from the taller standard screen is if I stoop into a racing crouch.  And I ain't gonna do that 'cos it's a Fazer 1000 not an R1.
Okay, I'm not in 'still air' at all and I'm gonna get covered in bugs, but for a 6'2" rider, the streetfighter screen is recommended.
Just take a look at how many taller screens (used once etc) are for sale - less is best.
AyJay...... you need to build up your grip strength mate but look after your licence first.  ;)

LESS IS BEST TELL THAT TO THE DONKEY  !!  :rollin :rollin :rollin

I set the TPS so the tach needle flickers between 5 & 10k rpm.  A small amount of advance over the stock setting.

You could also do Ivan's dynamic method which is described on Pat's Site, too.  You'll end up with the ignition advanced again.  I find my way quicker and less likely to piss off the neighbours. ;)

Mike, ive got a ignition advancer fitted so would i need to be firm as to where the tacho needle ends up!!

Karlo, thanks for the offer ill let ya no .

Hi chaps, i sorted the trim panels and they no longer rattle, i filled the bars with tiger seal PU adhesive that dries like rubber i did this with the bars on but forgot about the hole in bar its not pluged, it was for the left hand switch gear and guess wat  :o  i had sealant coming out my LH switch gear  :rollin  and it fecked now i could not beleave i made this mistake so i got a replacement off the bay.

Mike have you a link for doing the carb synch!

I called the man at oberone again today he said the heavy stainless bar ends are back in stock as there been alot of peeps asking for them but, so apair is on there way to me. http://www.ducati-products.com/acatalog/Motorcycle_Small_Universal_Bar_End_Weights.html

« on: 16 November 2011, 07:56:32 pm »
Ayup chaps, now since i changed my fairing inner pans to carbon ive noticed ive got very light tingling vibs in the bars not sure if it was already this as ive only rode the bike twice since changing the bars to renthal, and at the time oberone had no large stainless weights so ive got the large ali ones and the carbon pans seem to vibrate this did not happen with the stock plastic ones however i had lined the backs of em as well, so my 1st call is going to be line the backs of the carbon pans to eliminate the rattle/vib, now when it comes to bars, ive done a tinternet search and peeps seem to fill the bars up with silicon or expanding foam any one tried this!!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: AIS removal kits
« on: 14 November 2011, 10:29:13 am »
I believe the TPO kit is the one that requires you to remove the AIS stub from the exhaust header.  If so, those are a shrink-fitted part at the factory and can be a pain to remove as several owners have found out.

Sounds like CT had no such problems but something to be aware of when making your choice. :)

You are correct mike regarding removal of the ais stub, i also had no problem removing the stubs sounds like i was lucky .  :D

« on: 13 November 2011, 11:08:35 pm »
Ayup solorider, ive done the ais removal on 2 gen1 nows the 1st kit i used is the one you have in you post and the other one using justy's kit, now my opinion i prefer the ebay kit because it leaves the area free of all plugs and looks neat, and at the time i could not find the link on ebay  :\  so went with justy's kit and if your not aware the quality of his stuff is A1.

How the ebay kit works you push the cap in and in the other end is a ballbearing as you tap this in it pushes the wall of the cap out making a perfect seal and is pish easy to fit.

Tidy bike ya have er Nick.. i think to tell exact difference ya need to see in the flesh! the pics where the items are not fitted and the close up's was done with cam flash on, so will look glossy, but i do agree i like a satin finish to carbon if possible as it makes the carbon weave stand out.

Its a BIG shame they dont tell you the truth about timescale honesty is the best policy its ok having a good product but you need to be straight with your punters, as the goods look really good, and if they said to me from the start its 8 wks id have waited 8 wks but when they start bullsh1ting you start to wonder.
