FZS600 Fazer / Re: Help! What happening to my bike?
« on: 28 June 2012, 10:36:36 pm »
Have you an inline fuel filter fitted?

If it's happening below 3krpm, it may also be worth checking the pilot jets in your carbs.

You say its intermittent; is it truly intermittent, or is there any pattern at all (eg., cold / hot etc)?
Does it start / run ok from cold? Has it had any recent work (is it possible something has been disturbed during an unrelated job)?

If its started with heavy rain / wet weather, it's probably worth going through electrical / ignition systems looking for signs of water ingress and drying them out as required. Also worth checking for poor earths (rust) while you're at it.

As for water in the tank, has it had fuel in the last 10 days?

When it happens, does it turn over properly? Is it sluggish turning over (or dead)?

How old is your battery? (ie, is it feasible that its on its way out?).

Has your bike got a speedo overlay, or warning signs in foreign lingo (which could point to the bike being an import)?

Don't know about the earlier bikes, but the later ones can be switched between km / miles.

Before you go playing with fork heights and other factors, what tyres have you on, and what pressure / condition are they in?

Mine occasionally feels like its slipping at the back (esp on one particular bend) - but I also know full well my back tyre is squared off (motorways) and it won't be helping.

If you're running sporty tyres on it, are they hot enough?

« on: 25 June 2012, 10:22:41 pm »
I'm with Aviva, and when I enquired about the cost of insurance to fit heated grips and luggage (topbox), I didn't get charged any extra. I did get charged extra when I bought the Fazer, but to be fair it was a far bigger bike than what I'd had before, rather than admin charges.

FWIW, I had a claim on a works policy (also Aviva) after a van decked the bike 10 days after I'd bought it, accident happened Tuesday with the claim settled by Friday, and the bike assessed by the following Friday.

If you're going through brokers, try going directly to insurers (that way you avoid brokers fees etc).

« on: 25 June 2012, 05:14:34 pm »
Brake torque arm - if you have locknuts, they'll have a (usually blue) insert in the thread (it'll be quite obvious), further nylocs aren't hexagonal across their full width, but are machined round on the insert side.

As for the brake test, its gets tested on a roller for brake effort, as for the drag, it's not something I'd worry about. If your brakes were dragging or binding, you'd know via your fuel consumption.

Is it a sports rack you're after, or topbox / pannier rack?

If it helps, I've got a Givi Monokey topbox rack on my S2.

« on: 24 June 2012, 08:28:07 pm »
What age / mileage is the bike?

Out of interest, is there any other mods to it?

Have you done a general bolt tightness check (ie, including screws that are unrelated to the exhaust itself)? to rule that out?

If memory serves, BikeTrac is £299 fitted and around £100 annual subscription.

Haven't fitted one to mine, but if you're in a high-crime-risk area, it may help take the insurance down a bit.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: another exhaust question
« on: 23 June 2012, 05:36:35 pm »
Have you tried putting the original exhaust back on and seeing if it still happens (ie, putting it back to a known standard).

Is it down on power, or hesitant on the throttle at all?

Some exhausts do need setting up / re-fuelling to get the best from them, and the restrictor being fitted might not help in this regard.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Circuit repair for clock bulbs?
« on: 22 June 2012, 02:07:56 am »
The lights will have a feed (either from a fuse via the light switch, or via the ignition switch, I'm not familiar with the thou but on my FZ6 they come on with ignition), and an earth on the bike's frame, a rusty / bad earth can cause high resistance which would cause dim lighting.

If there's any connector blocks / multi-plugs, make sure they're clean and tight as they can suffer with water ingress and corrode. Bear in mind wiring to clocks will naturally be routed near the headstock and can be affected by steering action.

Chances are you'll find damaged / poor wiring connections are causing the problem, rather than a fault with the circuit board itself - wiring is subjected to vibration / movement, chemical attack and temperature fluctuations (wiring routed near engine suffering constant heating / cooling).

If you have a multimeter, you can try testing for battery voltage (especially on your "dead" bulb holders, the contacts can weaken with time, and pcb tracks can break).

If its an "ordinary" circuit board, it should be repairable if you're handy with a soldering iron, if its one of those surface mount component boards they can be a bugger requiring specialist gear to re-make joints.

(Apologies if I'm "teaching Granny to suck eggs", but in my experience people often overlook basics when diagnosing electrical faults).

If you have a wiring diagram, locate the wires to the lights, and make sure they're all intact, clean and tight all the way through (esp earth points).

What kind of state were the bulb connections in when you replaced the bulbs?

If it helps, my FZ6 (which followed on from the FZS) runs 5k rpm at 60mph (standard sprockets on that are 16T front 46T back).

Worth checking your electrical / ignition circuits for breaks / chafing / corrosion as well as water ingress.
Anything going through plugs / sockets can be a menace.

General / Re: Insurance Renewal
« on: 19 June 2012, 12:37:20 am »
Am with Aviva, they've been generally quite competitive.

Made a claim from works insurance (also Aviva), claim was settled within 3 days, and the bike assessed within 10 days, and the bike ready not long after that.

"Why the foc do the make it sooo difficult to get apart?"

Its mostly to discourage people from taking them apart. To be honest, once they're open, components are that small that you'd be lucky to do anything worthwhile anyway, without specialist skills / tools.

I think you've just answered your own question - try a new battery.

How long has that tyre been on, and (crucially)was the valve changed with it? What dust caps are (were) on it; metal or plastic?

Yep, I had a similar problem, esp if steering lock was on, have a look on the FZ6 page.

Just saw this thread, I would have said motor too, mate at work had identical symptoms on a Goldwing not long ago.

Cheers all, nice to know its not just my bike.
Was a bit worried it was going to be a new ignition switch and matching it to the immobiliser / ECU (ie ££££).

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Wind buffeting from standard screen!
« on: 05 June 2012, 07:29:01 pm »
What kind of speeds does it become a problem? I have the later FZ6 Fazer and find it ok up to 70-75mph, much more (80-90mph, winding on for overtakes) and it becomes irritating for any length of time.

A different screen may help, but equally some helmets are better than others as well.
