I know that you have probably already checked this, but have you made sure the the spring washers on the disc bobbins aren't tired, and the noise is the disc jiggling on the carrier. I had a ZZR600 that did exactly what you describe, and it was the spring washers on the bobbins which had just lost their "Spring".

I think that's exactly what has happened. I've been looking on various forums and it seems the R1 and FJ1300 with bluespot calipers suffer with the same problem. The general consensus was that it's normal, but after cleaning up the calipers (I noticed that one piston was slow to move on each of them) the noise is much less on one than the other. One post mentioned that replacing the spring clip with an 06 R6 caliper fixes the rattle. I think it's a case of the tolerances and wear adding up to allow movement and the rattle.
It's a shame that I didn't track this down whilst the bike was I the road as it's SORN’d now or i’d have thought to touch the brakes to see if the noise disappeared.

As it's such an easy replacement I’ll probably just clean and lubricate everything and see if that fixes it. If not I’ll start swapping things.

As  a bit more detail I’ve just taken the callipers off and it’s the same on both of them.
The knock is because the pad is held in with one pin so the pad is free to rotate around it and the knock is coming from the the pad rotating into the calliper.
So I’m assuming this in normal even though it’s quite a knock?
Might be worth ordering some new pins

I’d agree if they looked worn but they don’t and more importantly the holes in the pads seem to be elongated anyway so can’t see that would make much of a difference (unless it’s got the wrong pads installed that is!)

Are your pads able to a”rock” in your callipers?

After having checked the bike over for the umpteenth time I’d convinced myself that as the noise only seems to happens on rough road surfaces that it’s the front tyre that was worn and was causing the noise.
So I’d just stuffed some earplugs in and enjoyed the Summer.
The noise was still there but life’s too short and all that.

However…. I’ve just put the bike up on its ramp and happen to grab hold the (now free to rotate) front wheel.
If I rotate it back and forth a couple of degrees I get a noise that very similar to the noise I hear.
Is it normal for the pads to knock as you rotate the wheel? There’s no noise if you rotate in one direction, just when you go back and forth.
I’ve tried to hold the brake pads and pins to take out slack but the knocks still there.
Just wanted to check before I go down another rat hole!!

I’ve inspected and adjusted the cables so I don’t believe that’s the source of the noise so the search goes on…..
Not been for a ride yet but the valve seems quiet enough when revving it up.

SkidT - Hijack away  :lol

I’m going to have another look at this as my hearing is shot and maybe I’m missing the pinging and only hearing the lower frequencies.
The cable has been adjusted to “rest” with the fork aligned with the hole but I’m going to see if there are any witness marks where the valve is hitting the exhaust.

32
It's like something loose with a tinkling sound at 30 to 40 on/off throttle. Normally if really loose it rattles like someone tapping a spanner on the exhaust at tickover when cold.

Hmm, I’m not sure if it’s that. I hear something that’s quite a low frequency , but the speed seems about right.
I’ve just had a look at the valve and there’s some lateral movement (maybe  3 mm in/out) . Is that acceptable?

Almost since as long back as I can remember my bike has been making a noise that I’ve been unable to locate.
The closest I can get to describing it is that it sounds like the rattle you get from the clutch basket when you pull the clutch in.
Its not overly loud but I do notice it up to around 30 to 40mph. It might be there at higher speed but its drowned out by other noises.

Its a constant tone and doesn’t change with road speed or if the clutch is in or out.
I’ve checked just about everything from fairing panels rattling , through from mudguard resonating to chain tension.
I did at one point think it was the front tyre as it seemed to disappear after I replaced it, but I soon heard it again.

The one thing that’s just struck me was that perhaps its no more than a loose Exup valve rattling  away.
Could it be this? I’ve serviced it regularly so I know its free. I wonder if its too free!

Not from new, mine was 18 months old with 4K up.

35
Sorted. I’d forgotten the rubber cover that sits on the air box!
Found it on a shelf.
This is what happens when you dismantle something and try to rebuild it later.
I need a beer  :o :o

36
I took the side panels off a month or so ago whilst I did a bit of tinkering.
Went to refit them and noticed that both of the top rubbers are missing.
Looking at the exploded diagram on Fowler’s website it shows the rubbers at the bottom but the top is shown as being attached to the air box cover not the frame.
Does anyone know if the top rubbers are the same as the bottom?

That reminds me- it states there is storage space under the seat for the Yamaha U-Lock.

Has anyone managed to source one of these or is there another lock that fits?

Does look the biz and £47 doesn’t seem too bad for something that actually works  :D
Might have to raid the piggy bank.

I saw the Sealey tool on Amazon but the reviews indicated that the end was too big to fit on their particular bikes.

If it fits the Fazer then that’s the one I’ll get.
Thanks for the response.

Was thinking of having a fiddle with the pilot airscrew adjusters.
Can anyone recommend a tool to do this with the carbs in situ?

I keep looking at this;it certainly is a very interesting product.
The knowledge and effort you’ve put in shows you know what you’re doing.
It’s a truly impressive device.

If you could integrate Google Maps (or Android Auto) I’d not be able to resist hitting the buy button.
Also I’m less concerned about the overall size, more the shape. Is there any way you could just round off the edges to make it a little less box shaped?

This is really nitpicking. Fantastic job.

But then again I can see a 2016 MT10 with 2,800 miles for £8,300!
Maybe I could strike a deal to change for £5k?
Must stop watching YouTube videos of MT10s on one wheel at 80+ mph..... not that I can wheelie like that anyway!
I’m getting too old for this too, but if I remember not to look in the mirror I can still think I’m in my 30’s rather than twice that.

OM10. Wtf!! Clearly my brain is more mush than I thought.
Fz10 of course, or maybe I really meant OW01,which would cost me considerable more than £8k :eek

Finally got round to riding the bloody thing (I’ve always been a bit slow!)
In my defence as well as the carbs being stripped and Ivanised, I’ve started at one end of the bike and serviced just about everything.

So it was with some trepidation I thought I’d better ride it before we’re all locked in.

First impressions were good; the fuel was a bit stale so whilst the choke worked (that’s a first) it was a bit fluffy low down until it warmed up.

Taking it easy for a couple of miles until the engine was warm, I then wound on the throttle in third (I think!) Jeezuz it took off like the proverbial cat. I got to 10k just hanging on. I  had a quick look at the speedo and it did seem to be an awful long way round.
It was also still pulling....

I’ve been trundling around in a car for some time so I’m willing to believe I‘m a bit rusty when it comes to power, but the real revelation to me was the mid range pick up off a closed throttle. Before I’d really struggled on roundabouts with the trailing throttle to light throttle transition being really jerky. Not any more. Loverly!!
Ive just spent the rest of the time accelerating from 30 to 70 in out local lanes, just because if feels so responsive.
I think I feel less vibes too.

I did have a hankering for an OM10, but Whilst I’m sure it’s a fantastic bike I don’t think it’s worth the (at least) £8k extra it will cost me considering the mileage I cover.
Not that logic has ever stopped me from buying a bike if a fancy it  :evil

Just noticed that when Ogri kindly sent me some O rings he included the bag with Supplier details and O ring dimensions.
Whilst the Captain is sorted, maybe the next person might find this useful.
Hopefully it’s the right bag, or it may spark an interesting conversation with Kent Bearings!  :rollin

Do you mean the O ring for this?
I’ve got some I can send you.
As Ogri kindly let me have some I’m happy to pass some on.

I don’t know about the ECU reflash but I bought an Ivan kit for my gen 1 a couple of months ago.
I initially contacted him by Facebook Messenger, which is the route I’d recommend.
He responded really quickly too.

You can bet you’ll have to pay VAT somehow too plus £8 admin fee to the Post Office

I ordered a Skylift from M&P along with a 10% discount which brought it down to about £420 including adapter and shipping.
Buyers remorse then kicked in as it seemed a shed load of money and I could see tables were coming in @ £50 or so less. I was also a bit concerned that whilst different adapters fit  350 bikes they weren’t necessarily the ones I might buy next. I liked the idea of the table being universal so I ended cancelling the order.
I was looking at the tables again when a Big Blue bike lift came up on Gumtree for a price I was much happier to pay, it was also only 2 miles away from me so I bought that instead.
Quite impressed with it so far too!

:lol  I’m Ok going down, but can’t jump up like I used too!
Still haven’t bought the Skylift either as I made up my mind, went to M&P to order it (have a discount code) and it’s out of bloody stock!! :'(

I got mine from these people. Had no problems with it, good value for money https://www.kmsdirect.co.uk/tools-equipment/liftingtools
Personally, I would prefer to have a scissor style bench to keep the floor space as those types are longer when down.
Something more like this:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sealey-SEAMC454-MC454-Hydraulic-Motorcycle/dp/B00U7OPNU6

That’s a point that I’d not considered.
My latest thought is to go for the Abba Skylift as I like the idea of being able to move the bike around.
The only slight negative is the need to have a bike specific fitting kit and the need to remove the swing arm pivot cover every time  I use it.
I’ve got a single garage and whilst I know I can park the bike on the table I still think the Skylift gives me the best flexibility.
Just need to get one at a good price.
