Get yourself a Haynes manual first and it is easy enough for someone with basic spanner skills. Checking the clearance involves tank removal for access, cam cover and alternator cover off and then spin the engine round by hand so its at TDC for each cylinder as you check it with feeler gauges. Once you know how out of size they are you need to work out what shims need replacing. Unfortunately the actual replacing of the shims is a lot harder as you need to remove cam chain/sprockets in order to get under the buckets and replace shims...Haynes will walk you through but only attempt if you're competent

nope, just be careful with the rubber gasket on the cam cover. It is fairly strong but can be damaged by strong hands!

checking clearances is easy to do and not worth taking to a stealer, 1hrs casual labour (with tea!) had the tank off, cam cover off, clearances checked and bike reassembled. Decided that 2 intake valves were only 1 thou (inches) out of spec on the tighter side so will leave them be for now. Since it's the intake it'll be cooler than exhaust side so burning out due to poor fit against head is less of an issue.

Looks like my rattling is just the bloody cam chain! Poor design Mr Yamaha...

Thanks, that was some very comprehensive and informative posts guys! So the exhaust I think is fine as I only have a 0.2mm feeler so can't measure the exact 0.21mm minimum clearance, however 0.2mm went easily with very low drag and 0.25mm wouldn't fit so I'd say exhaust are around the 2.1mm tolerance.

Intake on the other hand, most of them measure 0.004" which is 0.1016mm so that should be fine. Unfortunately one of the intake valves measured 0.003" which is 0.0762mm so that probably does need swapping by the sound of it!

I am not entirely surprised that the clearances would get tighter as you say Major Rant, surely the head would wear faster than the oiled cam/bucket assembly? I think that I will have to stick to the manual on this one and pop in some new shims to be on the safe side!

sorry, i meant 'what problem are you suggesting is caused by the cct?' I know what it does but my query was about valve clearances and whether the cam chain should be tight against the upper guide (found between the intake/exhaust sprockets on the head). Not sure what you are suggesting is caused by cct :S

FZS600 Fazer / valve clearance question (again!)
« on: 30 October 2012, 09:37:25 pm »
Hi all, Just check my valve clearances (its bloody freezing out!) and exhaust are all at 0.2mm whilst intake varies from 0.076-0.1mm. From memory Intake should be 0.11-0.2mm and exhaust 0.21-0.3mm, so what affect will my clearances have if left unchanged (it's a real ballache)?

On a side note, whilst the cam cover was off I noticed that the cam chain is continuously held tight against the chain guide on the top of the engine (between intake and exhaust sprockets), is this normal?

Thanks!

I have an old set that bolt to lower engine mount and then to the lower frame rail (under the sump). Look discrete but work well, yours for £30+PP

I cut down a modern FZ6 touring screen for my FZS and its a marvel when doing long mileage!

this may be too simple but are you sure it wasnt a lock up/re-grip moment in the wet? Ive had this before and feels like ABS but is the tyre just skipping on grippy/slippy tarmac. just a thought!

the bbq high temp stuff is very matt so wouldn't use on covers etc

I used BnQ black BBQ paint and worked great! 1 year later in all weathers and its still there :)

FZS600 Fazer / Re: My bike is ticking...
« on: 08 October 2012, 07:17:07 pm »
sounds like you need to balance carbs, check spark on 2 cold cylinders and try resetting cam chain tensioner. It can come on suddenly, at least it did on mine, and then disappear just as fast. Apart from ticking it sounds like a very rough idle, does it pickup easy and smooth when you rev it or does it bog down at all?

thats guys, useful advice as always! Any ideas how you'd check if oil getting to the top is an issue? other than taking the cam cover off whilst engine is running....;)

not the cam chain as it was that quieting down that allowed me to hear the new tapping. exhaust nuts were torqued down only a week ago so thats sealed nice.

Thanks Darrsi that is really interesting for a sad git (engineer) like me! So the standard filter and unbaffled can was better? Sounds sensible to me. Can't believe how flat that torque curve is above 8K, lovely engine!

no idea, its a replacement motor i put in. Estimated at around 35-40K miles on it but don't know history. Will have them checked at next service but do you get any tapping noises with valve clearance problems?

FZS600 Fazer / top end rattle - valve clearances?
« on: 28 September 2012, 02:33:30 pm »
Hi all, so my fazer has had a noisy, clackety cam chain for aaages but out of the blue decided to quiten up on the way back from Assen BSB. Thing is, now I notice a relatively loud tapping noise coming from the head which rises and falls with engine revs in a similar way that the cam chain rattle would. Now I know that when valve clearance wear they become tighter and therefore less noisy, but can it cause the bucket/shim/cam lobe to make a rattle?? It is definately NOT cam chain and does quieten down significantly when warmed...any ideas foccers?

good to hear it noggy! You should be ok just rolling off slightly, idea is to reduce the torque load to the gearbox so shifting is smooth

FZS600 Fazer / Re: false neutral between 1st and 2nd
« on: 20 August 2012, 11:55:34 am »
Thanks Darrsi but I don't clutchless shift often and NEVER from 1st to 2nd as it is far to big a ratio step so isnt very smooth.

How much did it cost you out of interest to get that work done? (its an engine out and cases-split job yes?)

« on: 20 August 2012, 11:53:06 am »
Totally agree Lawrence, had to do it with my Fiat when the clutch hose burst, it is far easier on a bike's box though with no need to match revs and get angry at the dude in front for stopping for no reason...

Major Rant, do you mean adjust the linkage/selector shaft (with the dot on) or the height or the gear lever relative to foot peg?

Thanks guys!

FZS600 Fazer / false neutral between 1st and 2nd
« on: 19 August 2012, 09:07:46 pm »
Hi Foccers, Any advice on managing the false neutral between 1st and 2nd gear? I've noticed it recently when changed up it is very 'clunky' and will occasionally go into neutral instead of 2nd OR grind a little before clunking into 2nd. Either way, it isnt very smooth! Any tips on gear change technique so it doesnt get worse? (cant be arsed swapping engines as its not THAT bad)
