For all you Londoners that don't have anywhere to do your Spanner work try out Oval Motorcycle Centre. Simon and Matt have set up one of the best DIY maintenance workshops I have ever seen! And for all of you who are a little unsure about spannering your own bike, don't fear Matt is a fully qualified mechanic with heaps of experience and is always on hand to guide you through any procedure!

Try them out! :)

FZS600 Fazer / Stretched chain and long miles?
« on: 31 July 2012, 09:34:45 pm »
Yeah mate it does! Definitely dampens the sound from the chain down! Also the chain is an endless chain, so if you don't want to break the link to fit it, then your swing arm will need to come out! I cut the link off and used the split link provided to re-join!

Hi guys,

Just an update! Changed the chain and sprockets today and had a general strip down, clean and lube session whilst the bike was in bits, and the OEM kit is SO AWESOME! My bike feels brand new! Worth the extra dosh!

FZS600 Fazer / Front Sprocket Upgraded nut torque????
« on: 31 July 2012, 08:20:41 pm »
I just changed my chain and and sprockets today, my mechanic who has worked on race bikes for BSB race teams and ran his own outfit in a organised race series recommended torquing the new nut to OEM spec, 70NM but using 3 sides of the lock washer to secure the nut! His reasoning is that the thread is quite a fine thread and you risk damaging the thread should you over torque it!

He assures me that he has used this method with numerous Fazers in the past and has had no issues!

Hope this helps!

Also, if anyone is on the verge of new chain and sprockets the OEM kit from fowlers is fantastic! My bike feels like a new machine and so quiet compared with the aftermarket kit that was on the bike before! Definitely worth the extra dosh! ;)

Hi Guys

Just wanted to start this thread to share some or all of the things I love about the FZS600 Fazer! So feel free to share your thoughts or indeed any things that you find annoying about the bike and solutions to the issue!

This could be a great thread or a complete waste of time but here we go!

I bought my 01 box eye fazer with my head, not my heart. I have a history of GSXR's for previous bikes and I still love them! But I have grown to love my fazer as it does everything really well and is easy to live with! It's a work horse, and never complains no matter how hard I ride it or if I miss out on a wash for a few weeks! Most importantly, it never fails to put a smile on my face and sane speeds with truly useable power, something most sports bike riders will achieve in day to day road life!

It's not a perfect bike by any means, however it's quite close and it won't take much to make it so!
Last but not least, any newbies asking the question, should I buy a fazer for my first bike? My answer is, you'd be stupid if you don't!

FZS600 Fazer / Stretched chain and long miles?
« on: 21 July 2012, 01:13:26 am »
Alright, time for an update!

I did the trip and I'm not sure what I was worried about! It did it easy, but I have parked it up until I have the time to fit the new chain , sprockets and 12mm front sprocket nut!

For the benefit of others, the chain wore considerably on the journey to the point where I was worried it might jump off the sprocket due to how much slack was in the chain by the end of the trip, but there was adjustment left in it so I re adjusted and all was well! However like I said, I have parked it up for now!

The chain is a renthal and although there is more adjusting left in it, the chain has worn very un-even in its 12,000mile life, I would not recommend a Renthal chain to anyone! I have purchased a OEM Yamaha item to put on the bike so hopefully that fairs much better!

Take it easy guys!

Thanks to all you for your advice/insight and experiences!

I obviously would love to change it prior to the trip if I had that luxury, but I don't so it's either do the trip and go easy on the chain or abort the trip? I have ordered all the gear from Fowlers and I thought it would have got here in time to change out but I was wrong! It's my fault for not getting it done sooner, but I think it has atleast another 500miles left in it.

So I have decided to take the trip and deal with anything that happens along the way! Touchwood it's all ok!

This might be a good way to see how tuff modern chains are? I will let you guys know how everything goes and thanks all again :)

I have a question guys, my chain is stretched to buggery and I have ordered new chain, sprockets and the new 12mm nut  but I will not have time to fit the new gear before I head off on a little trip down south west! Will the chain last about 500miles round trip?

The chain has been adjusted to its tightest point @ 35mm however at its loosest point it's more like 50mm! It causes a surging on a closed throttle, so is it likely to snap on my upcoming journey?

Cheers for any advice guys :)

I agree and have decided to keep std gearing, also I think I should suss out whether the sprocket nut has been updated :) eek! I do tend to thrash my little Fazer as she enjoys it so much, so I need to keep on top of these things ;)

On that note, does anyone else feel that the fazer feels absolutely sublime above 6k RPM? Mines slightly rough below this and fuel consumption has gone up slightly over the last 6 months so I suspect the carbs need balancing!

has anybody noticed the obvious question (s) not asked as yet ? like are you a ballet dancer or a 5 ton porker ? are you 2 foot 8 inch tall or a team player for the harlem globetrotters? all effects the power to weight theories / drag.also the obvious rev difference when idle and `under load`.
I agree with you Ade, but surely a drop of nearly 1k in RPM  points to gearing being molested? My bike has std gearing and sits bang on 6k @ 70mph. I'm 5'1" and 85kgs BTW! ;)

well done blue!!...glad you got it sorted?....like being on rails now isnt it?...

Yeah mate, it's really good now... Next step is some Renthal ultra low bars, and possibly a 25mm jack up kit to really liven things up!  :D

also thinking of changing the gearing, but still undecided on that one! Better sort it out soon tho, chain needs replacing ASAP! :lol

FZS600 Fazer / Braided front brake lines
« on: 30 June 2012, 10:30:12 am »
To be honest, any of the big names like HEL, Goodridge, Vehill etc. are great! I have tried all of them on different bikes over the years and they have all given superior braking performance and feel compared with standard lines. I have a race set up and rear line from HEL on my Fazer now and the difference is night and day compared again with the standard lines. All the brands that I have mentioned retail online for around £80 for a full set up.

Good luck :)

Hi guys, just an update on my last post! I had new tyres fitted the other day and the correct sizes this time; 110/70 r17 from and 160/60 r17 on the rear! And what a different bike I have now! No more heavy steering and the bars wanting to fold in and slap the tank! Before I have even thunk it, the bike is already tipping in and tracking as it should!

On a side note i run quite a stiff set up, 2 lines showing up front and second to stiffest pre load on the rear! I weigh 85 kg  and it can be skittish around town as the pace picks up it give loads of feed back to let me know what happening at both ends.

Take it easy fellas :)

FZS600 Fazer / Flat Drag bars? Will they fit?
« on: 16 June 2012, 02:41:26 pm »
Hi guys, just wondering if anyone has fit flat type drag bars to the FZS600?

42
Cheers for the advice guys. I think my best option is to return to the original sizes and see what happens! My forks are set ok but the rear is a little soft, I'm also looking into a jack up kit to sharpen the turn in and the general response, however this will be after I replace the rubber!

Thanks again guys :)

had the same prob with a bandit 600!!....that had a 120 instead of a110..and was a bstd and did what yours is doing now?....feels like you have to counter steer on every corner?...and feels like it wants to tuck under? am i right?....get a 110 on n enjoy the difference?? :)

Thats exactly what its doing! Did it correct itself when you fitted a 110?

Hi Guys,

I have standard rim sizes on my bike (01 FZS600) being 17x3.00'' on front and 17x5.00" or rear. When i bought the bike it was wearing, and still is, 120/70-ZR17 BT-021 on the front and 160/60-ZR17 BT-021 on the rear. I have never enjoyed the way it steers, especially at lower speeds under 35-40MPH, as when the bike leans the handlebars want to come in and hit the tank. It takes a fair input of pressure on the bar to get the bike to hold a line around a corner. Has anyone else experienced this?

I have always suspected the front tyre was to blame for this, however i'm not sure. I need to purchase some new hoops for the old girl and have been wondering about other peoples experiences with the original tyre specs, being: 110/70-17 for the front, and 160/60-17 for the rear?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as i want to get rid of the tendency for the handlebar to slap the tank at low speeds.

Thanks in advance  :)

FZS600 Fazer / To Dyno Jet or not to Dyno Jet?
« on: 06 March 2012, 08:09:10 pm »
Hi Guys,

I have been toying with the idea of a Dyno Jet kit for some time now, as my headers need to be replaced and so do my inlet rubbers. So my train of thought is this. Get new full exhaust and whilst changing inlet rubbers, give carbs an overhaul. Hence, the Dyno Jet.

Has anyone had any experience or bad experiences with installing a Dyno Jet kit on a FZS 600 '01' model?

Introduction / Hi People, newbie here!
« on: 03 October 2011, 08:13:24 pm »
A big hello as i'm new to the site and new to Fazers! :D

First of all I'm loving the little Fazer, but need some advice on model niggles and traits.

The drive seems very snatchy at small throttle openings, so much so that i find myself slipping the clutch upto 20mph to get a smooth take off. Is this normal for the 2001 FZS 600? I have checked the chain slack, which currently is at 35mm however i am reluctant to adjust this back to 30mm as i regularly carry a pillion. Could the chain slack be contributing to the snatchyness?

Secondly i seem to hear what sounds like to me the cam chain rattling when the engine is cold, once the engine warms up this sounds seems to go away. My engine has done approx 24k miles in 10 years. Not excessive, but could the cam chain need replacing? or could it be the spring in the cam chain tensioner that has gone?

I think thats it for now folks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers guys and girls.
