I stuck a set in my Fazer when I bought it back in 2006. Never noticed any difference riding, but sold the fazer (last month) after adding 30,000 miles to it with the same plugs. They needed a clean and check every now and the but were still going good....

So they do last.

Had several tyres plugged. If the plug is in the tread then fine - never in a sidewall.

Mind you, I wouldn't assume a plugged tyre still has it's Z17 rating, so stick to sensible speeds.

problem is if I put the concrete 100mm below surface level, the ground anchor will be below the drive when it's laid - once fitted the anchor can't be removed (you drive hardened ball bearings into the allen bolt heads).

I hadn't though of the chemical agent - so maybe it would work. If any would be thief has to demolish a 3 foot hole in a block wall to get the anchor out it should satisfy the demands of the insurance co.

The new shiny thing needs a little more security that the old Fazer did, so have had a ground anchor in a box in the shed for the last 6 years.

Problem is at the new house, I'm a) garage less and b) the drive where the shiny lives is gravel. Now correct me if wrong but raw bolts in gravel don't work too good.

I know the obvious is to dig a big hole and fill it with concrete, but we're probably having the driveway done later in the year and I don't want to a) waste the money and b) (more importantly) have to dig it all out again in 6 months time.

So, the next best option is the 6 foot block wall next to us,

Would that be solid enough? Or would it be worth just using a heavy (circa M12) raw bolt hoop?

Perfect - thanks for that. Fowlers were trying to pull the "you must use a dealer (us)" one on me today. I told them that was illegal as far as I was aware.

Sold it (well part-ex).

It had 19k on the clock when I got it 9 years ago and it had 55059 when I got off for the last time.

Bloody good bike - I did just over 35,000 miles and other than 2 punctures (one at home and one at work) I never broke down.

I know for cars you can take your new car to any qualified mechanic for it's service and they cannot legally refuse to honour the warranty.

Is the same true for motorbikes? I would assume so and would imagine any manufacturer having a hard time should it come to court...

no vid but would be rather easy (from memory):

1) remove tank (or just remove bolt at front and lean up. watch the breather pipes don't get kinked when you put it back).
2) id coil pack - will be just below tank on bracket secured by 10mm bolts.
3) disconnect wiring
4) replace with new

If the thread about carb balancing is still working look at the pics - you can see the coils as they are moved to access carbs adjustments.

Thought I'd bring this one back and post a final update.

The Fazer will be part-ex in under a week so this is the final update on the long gearing.

Overall it worked out well. The mpg increased a little: I used to get about 150 miles to a tank and now I get about 165. The power has dropped obviously, but if you stay in a lower gear you can still enter warp speed when the rev's hit 7k although it's not quite as fierce as it used to be. So for commuting that makes no difference at all. I found with the long gearing it was easier to ride in traffic and low gears were not as torquey. Mind you this suits my style of riding - in traffic I tend to ride with low revs and use the engine torque.

I can't say if this would have improved tyre life as it's not been long enough.

So. Thats that. I'm glad I did it and would do again.

Well the mpg counter on the demo bike was reading 68mpg and I cannot for one minute imagine people taking a bike for a test drive and riding like a saint! So, I used to get about 50 to 55 out the Fazer, I hope to get 70 to 80 out of the NC. I might join Fuelly and log it. I'll report back once the bike has run in and I've got stable numbers...

Did the test ride today. The NC750 and the MT-07

The MT-07 was more fun to ride, but the bike is quite small and I'm not lol. Also the saddle isn't great and the indicators etc are awkward and fiddly.
The NC750 was a different ride - the engine gained nothing from revs, it has a constant torque all the way through the range. That took a bit of getting used to. It was also a more comfortable position.

So all in all it was a finely balances, each had it's good and bad points. In the end I went with the sensible option. 99.9% of my miles are to and from work so I went with the NC750. Got a good deal from the dealer - £600 for my old Fazer, plus accessories fitted for free with a couple of hundred off the bike.

So - it should arrive around the 28th. It'll be the first time I've ever owned a vehicle less than 10 years old!

Oh - and it's red lol

Shame really as the bike is quite good. Most annoying is I had to put new chain, sprockets and battery on it in the last few months of 2014 and feel like I haven't got my money's worth yet.

Continuing on a changing bike theme, whats the old one worth?

The details:
Mk1 Fazer 600 S Reg (Jan 1999). Engine is good, new chain and sprockets + front tyre in 2014. Stainless steel downpipes, pure rust end can (original, leaks but always passes mot "Exhaust leaking but not excessively noisy"). Acumen Cat 1 alarm. Double bubble windshield. Oxford heated grips. Tatty givi rack (no box). Headlight mod.

About 50k miles.

No service history, but has everything done as needed and oil & filter changed every year (about 6k miles).

Dry miles only, except when it's raining.

Cosmetically it's in need of some TLC - a few scratches here and there etc.

No pic at the moment as it's dark and pissing down.

Not sure whether to part-ex it or sell private.

The honda finance will be hard to beat - 4.9%apr. EDIT: I take that back - there are quite a few available at the same APR!

No idea about the Yamaha as couldn't find anyone to go through the numbers today. Will call them Monday and find out.

Had a look at the MT-07 and sat on the demo bike. Quite like that one.

It's all gonna come down to test ride and finance...

To be honest, at the moment I hope the Honda drives ok - it's gonna be a lot better for the commute; better MPG, lower power means the back tyre should last a little more and no need of a back box with the tank storage. Then again ..... arrggghhh lol

Thats the issue with the Fazer - it's ok, but the maintainance it becoming a pain - and there is always something that needs doing. Besides, the lights are shite and I would like something new for once.

Hmmmm.....

Well, I've got the NC700X booked for a test drive. I'll see what finance is available on the MC-07/MC-09 and book a test drive for one of those at the same time.

Since 99.99% of my biking now consists of the drive to and from work - 8 miles each way, I'm not too worried about excitement - there is only so much you can do that's exciting when you're filtering through the traffic on the motorway.

I've had the fazer for 10 years now and at 16 years it's getting a little long in the tooth. Still runs well but getting scruffy.

So finally decide to get a new bike. That bit was easy. Deciding what to get isn't.

I've narrowed it down to two. Sensible vs Fun.

For sensible we have the Honda NC700X. Average 65MPG, excellent commute and service every 8000 miles. Zero miles on the clock and Honda finance at 4.9%and my old bike as deposit comes in at about £132 per month.

For fun we have the FZ8 - the bigger fazer. Nice familiar with oodles of power but only 40MPG. About 8k miles and with standard dealer finance probably similar to the Honda.


Sort of leaning towards the Honda, as I'm more interested in economy now.

Anyone have/tried either of these?
