FZS600 Fazer / Re: Where the fff did this come from?

Looks like the dowel that sits on the screw on the clamps that go on the carb to head rubbers....did that make any sense?

http://www.yamahamotorcyclespares.co.uk/genuineparts/9796/10/yamaha%20fzs600%20fazer/intake?uid=0

Item number 6, a dowel sits on the screw (presumably to prevent overclamping) they're very easily to lose but not really nessecary...

If you've recently taken the nuts off then they should be fine to get off again, it's only when they've been left a long time that they're really at risk of snapping the stud. Take them off and refit, if they gaskets are fairly new, reuse them, if they're the original ones then replace as they're fairly cheap anyway.

Where about are you based buddy? Also, what's the mileage?

Blue smoke is burning oil, white smoke is burning water. Pull the spark plugs to investigate symptoms, hopefully it's nothing bad.

Looks tempting, what's the mileage like?

FZS600 Fazer / Timing question
« on: 27 April 2014, 10:31:03 pm »
I'm setting the timing on my camchain but I appear to be a tooth out on the exhaust cam. Can I remove the camshaft holders on just the exhaust camshaft, rotate it and tighten them down again without damage? Or do I need to undo both the exhaust and intake camshaft holders?

Cheers

For Sale & Wanted / WANTED: FZS600 Mk1 Engine <30k

Will probably be needing a "new" engine in the coming weeks, just thought I'd see if anyone has one going?

That being said, if I was in the position again, I would contact these guys as they charge £39 for a rebuild, or £62 for a refurb and paint job. Didn't know about them though so can't comment on their quality of work.

I split the caliper and used a £10 portable air compressor to remove the stuck pistons, cleaned, lubed, new seals and refitted.

This one.

I think you're right, new braided lines and thoroughly bled system might mean they're now working optimally, will put some new GG pads in and see what happens. HH is sintered and GG is ceramic, correct?

Not sure what they are but same as before I refurbed the caliper

« on: 20 April 2014, 08:20:51 pm »
I've just replaced all the seals on my rear brake caliper, including the tiny joint seal. Fitted braided lines and bled through, however, the braking is now very sensitive, not even remotely progressive, tapping the rear brake pedal almost locks up the tyre. Would appreciate any advice on how to adjust this?

Ye, compressions not TOO low but the pressure is pushing oil up the crankcase breather into the airbox. Maybe I'll just swap out the engine then, would be cheaper in the long run probably.

Old barrels had a small crack in cylinder 3. The current barrels are brand new as a garage was closing down and getting rid of stock. The current pistons/piston rings are original. I'm essentially trying to find a way to solve the problem of blow back without spending £200 on new piston rings.

I can't comment as to why one of the cylinders had a crack in as I bought the bike like that but the cooling system works as it should so I'm not too worry about it reoccurring.

The idea would be to buy different barrels together with their respective pistons that are already bedded in (ca. £40) rather than 4 sets of new pistons (ca. £200).

Is there anyway to tell which piston belongs to which cylinder or are the all identical? I ask as i'm considering buying some used pistons/barrels as my old piston rings aren't bedding into my new barrels. Problem being, most sellers appear to have mixed up the pistons so there's no way of knowing which one belongs to which cylinder, any chance the pistons are labelled 1,2,3,4 or is that wishful thinking?

Damn it! Thought as much as I hadn't noticed them when previously removing/fitting barrels. Cheers for the info.

So after some research it seems there's actually an O-ring at the bottom of the barrels that I wasn't aware of? It's in the service manual, however, it's not in the parts catalogue... does this thing even exist? Section 4-25 in the service manual, item 6. Can't seem to find it anywhere else, nor have I seen it. If it exists I thought I'd change that first to see if it helps.

Yeah, maybe the most sensible option is swapping the engine out. Although a third option would be to buy some second hand barrels and pistons that are already married up and put them in the engine. Not sure how feasible that is but it would only be £50ish

Replaced the barrels in my engine as the last one was cracked in cylinder 3, but couldn't afford to replace the piston rings at the time. Well the obvious happened and the old piston rings aren't bedding in to the new barrels so I'm getting combustion pressure going into the crankcase and forcing oil into the airbox. It's not a huge problem, but...should I replace the piston rings and hope that solves it (ca. £200) or buy a "new" engine for £250-300? I'm confident in changing the piston rings, but I've never replaced a whole engine and it sounds a pain in the arse considering the tight fit, opinions?

Check your carb to head rubbers for a vacuum leak, easy to check, not so cheap to fix though.

FZS600 Fazer / Engine Replacement
« on: 01 November 2013, 10:11:26 pm »
Evening guys, just wondering if anyone can tell me if I'd need any special tools to swap out my engine? Will I need something to lift the engine or can I get a friend to help me lift it in and out?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Tinkering

Just the one CCT at the back of the engine, a front guide which slides out, the top guide you can see and a guide at the back which the CCT pushes against. The camchain can lift off a bit like that if you've turned the engine anti clockwise. Turn the engine clockwise till TDC and the camchain should seat better.

Check your clearances, if they're alright then think about replacing the camchain (see how far out the CCT is by removing the middle bolt first (being careful it doesn't shoot across the room) then removing the CCT and counting the clicks out). If it's near the end, replace the camchain, some people advocate endless ones but a riveted one is fine in my opinion.

When does it misfire? If it misfires at idle then I'd suggest checking the pilot/mixture screws and ensuring theyre all 2 turns out.

Not 100% sure what you're asking, but tighten the camshaft caps down like you would torque a cylinder head down, in a criss cross pattern to avoid snapping/bending a camshaft.
