FZS600 Fazer / Strange and intermittent electrical problem
« on: 20 June 2018, 07:07:44 pm »
Hello fellow Foccers (that will never not give me a giggle)

Have noticed that on some occasions my clock has been reset on the bike earlier, it's happened once or twice while driving as well (clock+ODO reset, dashboard and gauges reset before returning to normal).
One morning it 'hung up' and repeated the initial startup where the clock blinks etc endlessly. No lights, seemed to have no or very low power. I left it for a while, treated it to some well chosen words, wiggled some wires etc, few mins later she's back to normal and I've not seen the issue again (5 days or so ago).
Since the bike's already not behaving 100% right I've been suspecting the regulator is failing. Normal problem on this island they say, as it's very dusty and very warm.

Anyone seen the same or similar problem on theirs?

If your doing sprockets don't forget the upgraded front sprocket nut, 12mm instead of 9.
Already swapped on mine =)

Changed the H4 and position lights from Halogen to LED (Well, half of it so far).

If you're getting a shop to do the work did you got a price off them for the parts? It might work out cheaper if they source the parts. Would be worth asking anyway
Thanks for the tip, will check with them! They're not brand specific though, and on this island there's not a lot in stock (and anything in stock has a good markup).

Generally I've found parts to be 10-50% more expensive here than online.

Hey foccers!

Got a shopping list ready, anyone spot anything missing/unnecessary on it (Full service, front brakes, bearings and shocks, chainswap, carb clean+balance)? I'm sourcing fluids locally and having a shop do the work, especially the crab cleaning and balancing - i heard you can get pinched real bad  :rollin

Buying the front reservoir gasket locally as well.

Service kit details: https://www.wemoto.com/bikes/yamaha/fzs_600_fazer_sp/02-03/picture/service_kit

Well know and noticeable, gets rid of the holes in the rev range and make the bike sharper and nicer to ride.  Fit a quality end can (Quill in my opinion) and a K&N that's it, just make sure the crabs are properly balanced and enjoy.
I'm with you mate if the crabs are out of balance nothing feels right.  :rollin :rollin
I present to you; The self balancing crab.

Bought it very cheap with the thought of trading up soon. But the Fzs600, even on a bad day, is a fun ride.

I'll try to get my crabs in balance, thanks for the tip! :rollin

Original air filter?

I'm replacing the original with a KN.

K&N all the way for me.
Make any changes to the airbox or snorkel?

Appreciate all the good tips! Shopping list is almost complete, Fazer is in for a treat. Might take it over to Sicily after it's been serviced.

Good evening foccers!
About to give the Fazer a bit of a makeover, since it's still not running 100% (has a cutoff at around 7-8k rpm, then pulls as normal). Have already cut some off the leads and changed to the NGK caps which fixed most of it, will send it for a service and figured I might as well get a KN filter or similar. As the tank is coming off, figured I'd have the carbs refurbished as well as replace the Regulator. I'm presuming switching to different jets is recommended with more air flow, and it already has a Mivv pipe on it. Got tips on what jets to get?

Second part, I've seen these LED H4 bulbs that have the inverter built into it, anyone tried these on their bikes? https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07B79C19R/ref=sspa_dk_detail_6?psc=1

Chain and sprockets are getting swapped, I've seen the cheaper kits with DID chains from about €90 (530 dimension), or the more expensive Renthal for almost twice. I ride on Malta, where the roads range from abysmal to just horrible so the suspension takes a beating, chain as well. Anyone tried the various kits available online and have recommendations?

Brakes will need some TLC too, from the clues (stripped head on the reservoir and really funky braking at times) brake fluid and bleeding is long overdue. I don't ride in the rain and i saw some thread here (which I can't find now) about how there's a kind of pad that works well for those conditions? After a search, seems I might have to swap the front bearing too.

... buy a cheap bike just for daily use, wont have to spend much money on it and upgrade later. Anyone else had that same thought, but then just loved the Fazer?

Snip
Great action shot!  8) Bike looks v.nice!
Thanks! There's a strip of road where bikers ride up and down every Saturday and Sunday, and photographers usually set up at different places to both train and earn a few extra quid by sharing them in local biker groups later. If you visit Malta you should rent a bike and join  8)

Cut off 5mm of the leads and swapped to NGK SD05F plug caps. Filled the tank with 99 octane and fuel system cleaner.
And found a leaking front shock.

Hey Foc-ers.
Small update from the med: Been running on 3-4 for a while, so i switched to the NGK SD05F (Found locally for €10 or so total) today and there was an immediate difference. I cut of 5mm each lead gave them some WD40, and put one of those fuel system cleaners as recommended in a few other posts.
Back to it's normal, bang-on 1200rpm idle, great pull from low RPM and no hesitation or spluttering on 7-12k. Cheers everyone for the help!

Now, since it runs fine the left front shock has begun leaking. Perfect timing for a brake/bearing service and upgrading to 15w.

PS: Any tips for smoked/clear front blinkers are greatly appreciated.
PPS: I'm slowly moving the bike back from having supersport bars etc and when I ride it's like I'm "tipped forwards" in the saddle, can't seem to get my arse planted properly. How would I see if the bike's rear spring/shock setup is raised, if that's the case? Perhaps some Fazer guru can see from the pic above if it's the case?

OP said his TDM would also run rough after washing. As someone who has previously owned a TDM I was wondering - how did he tell the difference?

Sorry - couldn't resist...  :lol
The speedo moved slower, that was a dead giveaway  :rollin
Speaking of rough, used to ride a '86 Moto Guzzi V650...

The Fazer is still a bit rough from time to time, will give it new NGK caps and cut 10mm from the leads this weekend and check the drain holes. Might go overboard and do coils+regulator since I'm already messing around with it.

Got a pic of it from last weekend as well:

Update!
After a bit of drying in the Mediterranean sun, bike now seems to be running as normal again, more than likely it was caused by water around the plugs/cables.

Anyone remember the feeling of buying a bike, thinking that 'ah, no more expenses for a while' for the first day or so?  :D
I think I'll replace the leads and sparkplugs later on and I'll make sure to get some O-rings to seal them better.

i wouldnt be suprised if its just your ht leads shorting out
my old chop was missing a rubber cap and started to run like sh*t in the rain and when i went to play with the plugs i got a bit of a shock.
if its fine again tommorow remove each boot and put a smear of silicone around the lead and slide back onto the cap and it will seal it and stop any more water ingress
Hoping it's that, I live in a place where it's sunny and warm 300 days of the year, and the previous owner had it garaged and handwashed. After being rained on heavily it started doing this, and then once more after a proper clean.

The drain holes on the heads might be stuffed too.

If you've owned a tdm this one should be easy. Wrap the coils and leads in sa tape.
If you have COP's then they are likely shorting to the head and need replacing.
Will check what you describe pronto! Would you also elaborate on the terms 'sa tape' and 'COP's'?  :rollin

Thanks!

FZS600 Fazer / FZS600 runs rough after washing the bike
« on: 16 April 2018, 06:55:58 pm »
Hey!
First of all, thanks for all the useful info on this forum, has helped me a lot already (Renthal swap was by advice from this place, new front locking nut is about to be mounted when i swap chain+sprockets).
I own a 2003 FZS600, gave it a good wash this weekend and found it to be running like a parallel-twin after the washing was done. Looked nice but ran like crap - the exact opposite as before the wash. Running on 2-3 cylinders, had to be kept running by throttle, had no pull - especially under 5k.
Over 6-7k it runs like normal and pulls well, same if i give it a lot of throttle on low-mid RPM, it'd run fine for a while then start running rough if i kept feathering the throttle in normal traffic.
Have had the issue on a TDM previously, where heavy rain would gather around the sparkplugs/caps and make it run rough, similar problems with the Fazer?
I have half a thought of water in the air filter/housing, but in that case the bike wouldn't come alive on higher RPMS would it?

Appreciate all the help and input.
