I work on the assumption that everyone on the roads is an idiot so when some one proves otherwise its a pleasant surprise !

Its a bad move to try and change someone else's bad driving - it tends to piss people off and make the situation worse - just stop spending  you time looking at him in you mirror ( and not the idiots in front of you) and they will pass you soon - normally at the worst overtaking point you can think of!

No point getting mad about it - it just ruins your day and makes you die younger than you should - chill!

« on: 04 March 2013, 05:36:46 pm »
never met anyone who uses the clutch changing up on 3rd 4th 5th and 6th  except guys who ride big heavy cruisers  -  clutchless changes are a lot smother at the upper end of the rev range.

Modern bike gearboxes are designed to do this as they mesh with out the cluch at roughly the mid point in the rev range going up the box - but I wouldn't try it coming down the box - now that would bugger your gearbox up!

well spring may have finally arrived to the frozen wastes of North East Scotland - took my fazer out for the first run of the year ( yes I'm a fair weather biker these days) - bring on the summer!

Today was the first chance to try out the new double bubble screen - I know they don't work for all heights but I'm 6'4 and it seems to have stopped the blast hitting me square in the face - result!

I seem to have opened a can of worms - I wasn't really asking for opinions on the merits of the 'hero blobs' - I've been through my scrapping pegs on the ground with my knee down period of my riding life.

I use the hero blobs these day to remind me to stop being a silly old fool and not to lean so far I scrape my frame or exhaust - you also have to remember that bike magazine journalists are super heroes who of course would take them off.

I have now got the part number for the technically named 'bolt' (4SV-27435-00) so will order some up - thanks and sorry for bringing it up!

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Wont Run Without Choke
« on: 18 February 2013, 08:31:39 am »
With out getting too technical running with only choke would indicate one of two things - too much air (without choke) or not enough fuel - I would gues not enough fuel as I doubt you have aquired an air leak with it sitting over the winter.
A few simple checks would be to check any fuel filters for gummimg up , check non of your fuel pipes are kinked or twisted and you could even run a bit of new fuel wit redex though the carbs.

Does it die if you take the choke off when you got some good revs on ?-  if it does not and will run then this would indicate that the pilot jets are blocked as some one said earlier.

Hi Simon - sorry to hear your have so many problems with you back - as one of the earlier post said - there are two types of people who have back injuries , those who give up and those who keep kicking .
I know its a shit to keep kicking (  I fractured two lumbar vertebrae which subsequently sliced the adjoining discs to shreds) but long term its worth it - with the help of drugs and a sense of humour ( and a supportive wife) I'm still active even though its taken a long time ( just returned to motorcycles after a 10 year break).

What ever happens best of luck with your opp - and remember you can always buy another bike in the future,

thinking of you

attached are a pic of the front bracket and the rear bracket - both sides are similar fittings, hope this helps.

Please excuse the state of my bike - its been sitting outside all winter and is due a jolly good spring clean.

« on: 05 February 2013, 06:32:09 pm »
I think huggers keep a lot of shite off your bike as do fender extenders which are cheap enough.

Probably the best mod/ upgrade is to change the front sprocket nut - cheap peace of mind.

My bike runs a lot better with a K+N filter - I guess that's a Mod, the belly pan don't do much but I like the way it looks.

My belly pan took a lot of fiddling to get in the right position - I put all the fittings on loose and then shuggled it about until it looked right - then tightened every thing up .

I can take some photos of the fittings if it would help

General / Re: locks
« on: 03 February 2013, 11:34:58 am »
As you see from the attached video link people dont " pick"" euro locks anymore but snap them - this method is so easy and reliable way of getting in that some councils  and  police forces are using it to force entry to properties.

Unfortunately all the "scrotes" also know how to do this and with a bit of practice can do it very quickly - the solution to it is a snap proof lock which has a flexible section in the centre that is not solid and brittle metal.

I not promoting any particular lock shop - I just put this link in as it had a large selection.

If you have not changed your front door lock I would because this method is sweeping across the UK

« on: 03 February 2013, 08:45:26 am »
The picture below is a euro lock that is used in UPVC front doors on houses - they are super easy to break in to through a recent discovered method called snapping and bumping ( look it up on youtube) - if you have one on your house get a snap proof one quickly before your burgled! They cost about 25 quid on places like screwfix and take about 30 mins to fit - the best 25 pounds you will ever spend!!!As for bike security disk locks and roller shutter padlocks are hard to break , also U locks  are good - but remember you get what you pay for with locks so if its cheap it tends to be easy to cut through.

Just in case you were thinking I was some kind of "Raffles" the gentleman thief I'm not - I've been in the fire service 25 years and have cut and forced many locks and chains

Hi there - I too am a rider who returned to bikes after a spinal injury  ( L3+4 vertical fracture) , I find the riding position very good as you body is upright with you heels tucked slightly up which takes the pressure of your sciatic nerves.

As for problems - yes some have the sprocket nut problem - ask if its been changed , down pipes rot , brakes seize if not used but on the whole they are a pretty hardy bike and a million miles from prima dona sports bike which need constant fettling to keep them on the road.

does anyone know what laws and regs apply to a 1959 motorcycle - particularly in relation to the exhaust requirements ?
I can find the info on modern bikes but was wondering what applied to the older MOT exempt bikes - I am currently riding one with no silencer and would like to know my facts if stopped by a copper younger than the bike  (which is most of them!)
