That makes good reading Major, let's hope the police keep it up and it's not a 6 month fad.  Some of them (lower front fog lights) do seem extremly bright, usually on older beemas.

I'd love to be a traffic cop (paperwork allowing) I'd nab them all, phones, fog lights, tracksuits, tail gating, middle lane hogging, undertaking, I'd be like Cartman when he was a traffic tricycle cop - RESPECT MY AUTHORITY!  :rollin

Is anyone going to the bike show this weekend?  I'm going with a couple of friends on Friday, riding up (weather permitting) from Kent if anyone is interested in joining us.

I was always led to believe that front fogs are supposed to be a low angled light that illuminates the road "below" the fog and as you say, lets you see the verge etc, it's not about seeing into the distance because any lights pointed into fog just reflect back.

If I turn mine on (despite being in the main headlight cluster) the only extra road I see illuminated is just in front of the car, it adds no benefit to what I can see at night.  Most people just think it makes their car look cool, not caring if they are dazzling other drivers/bikers or not.

WOW, so far so good, very impressed with Yamaha.

I've just phoned up the Faversham Bike Shop, Yamaha dealer (never used them but I've always heard good things) and explained my bike is an 02 reg, had it 2 years, no idea if the nut is correct or infact ok.

They've spoken to Yamaha head office, they have confirmed it can be done under warranty (not bad for 10 years later) and they will call me back to arrange getting it checked out......watch this space......

I agree with you Crishner, I don't think I've ever used my front fogs.  Mine are part of the main front lights rather than 2 that hang down below the bumper.

I didn't realise about all car manufactures having to add front running lights, that explains the increase in cars with these, (one's on Audis are very noticable) BUT, IMO an own goal by the authorities who decide this because it's just encouraged a load of tw&ts to turn their front fogs on to look "the same" as these newer cars!

I don't mind those running lights too much, it's when you get a wall of effectively 4 headlights per car coming towards you.

I do flash them and point at the front of their car, but all that probably goes through their head (if anything) is "why's that biker just lit a candle on the front of his bike?" God bless Fazer headlights  :o

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Cagers using fog lights, FFS they don't make your car look good, they dazzle me, especially when it's dark and wet, plus they just make you look like a C8NT!!!!  Double plus, it's ILLEGAL!  TURN THEM OFF!  :grumble

If I didn't have a Fazer I'd dazzle you back with my main beam!  :\

IMO car manufacturers should be forced to make one switch for fog lights, one that turns on the front and rear at the same time, this might make people less likely to turn on just their fronts, or, reverse the switch as it is on most cars at the moment, you turn on the rear ones before you are able to turn on the fronts.

It's really starting to p1ss me off on my daily commute!

Locksmith, you are quite right, but it don't half p1ss me off when I really think about what people get for sitting on their arse at home all day, especially the stuff I can't afford.  BUt I know I'm not alone in my thoughts, Dilligaff sums it up rather well too.

please don't rattle my cage on this one.  *sits on hands*

BBrown1664, HERE HERE and that's just the tip of the iceburg

Bugger, I'm off...family down the road, in a 100% identical house to us, she's a mature student and he sits at home all day, they have one child we have 2.  I work, my wife is a stay at home mum.  We are desperate to move, we love our little terraced house but with 4 of us in there it's all of a sudden VERY small.  But, we can't afford to move because of stamp duty, movings costs and the increase in the mortgage, council tax and heating bills etc that a bigger house would incur.  BUT, people down the road are on benefits, they say the house is too small and get moved into a nice 3 bed semi in a nice part of town, nothing too grand but a house that would suit us down to the ground, so, REMIND ME WHY I WORK!!!!???!!  and breathe *sits on hands again*

FZS600 Fazer / Re: My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. HELP!! :-(

re tools for spark plugs, the Fazer tool kit, located under the seat, behind the rubber cover towards the rear lights, (if that makes sense) has a plug spanner, I've used it twice now and it does a fine job.

Just be careful not to cross thread them when you put them back in oh and TOP TIP, get an air duster and blow all the dirt and crap from the area around each plug BEFORE you remove them otherwise it will drop into the space vacated by the plug after you've removed it.

Maybe get a haynes manual, very useful for doing DIY on the bike.  I'm no mechanic, I know my limits, which is about 3 spanners in Haynes world, that more than covers the basics such as spark plugs, checking air filter etc.

Also worth considering getting a manometer for balancing your carbs, another easy job, there are some great instructions on this site that I followed with no problems.  Balanced carbs will help the bike run smoother.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Heated Grips
« on: 06 January 2012, 10:43:13 am »
My garage fitted mine and I wanted the same, they wired it off the fuel pump, not sure how correct that was but it works.  I did subsequently read in the instructions that the oxford grips I have will only work off a certain voltage and that the engine has to be running and the alternator charging the battery to achieve that voltage, hense they can't be turned on by mistake.

Still prefer them being linked into the electrical system.  I work at a Uni and I was worried students might fancy a laugh, leaving me stranded when it came to home time.

Big Mac, i dont see the difference between a Motorway or a dual carriageway whether it is a A, A(M) or a B road surely the national speed limit is 70 on all of those?

National speed limit is 60 for single carriageways (country lanes, A roads etc) and 70 on motorways.  If if single carriage way is a 70mph zone it would signed as 70.

Take a good supply of Avon Skin So Soft (the green spray bottle) for the little biting Foccers, stinks to high heaven but does keep them at bay a bit. :rollin

But it does leave you with baby soft skin!   :D

Honestly though, it's true, it's good stuff, the midge hate it!

« on: 25 November 2011, 02:43:08 pm »
Funny you mention this, mine has just come up for renewal for a princely sum of £20 plus the cost of the photos  :eek

I'm sure I heard stories from a while back about licences going off to the DVLA and coming back without motorcycle entitlement, so I'm planning on photocopying my licence before it goes off.  How much do the Post Office charge, I noted that there "may be an additional charge for this service"

What's annoying me the most is I only passed my bike test in June 2010 and they didn't think to renew the photo then, maybe it's because that was free and they now get to charge me £20 for the privillage, thieving bastids!

My rear caliper is sticking, if I don't go down the replacement/upgrade route, what parts do I need to be looking at replacing/purchashing?  Seeing as it's brakes I'll be getting my local garage to do it, but I'd like to make sure they replace the correct bits.

Cheers

General / Re: New helmet time!
« on: 22 November 2011, 02:49:44 pm »
This is making interesting reading, I've only ever bought one helmet, it's a Lazer Fiber D1.  I bought it when I got my first bike, sales guy recommended it because it's composite.  They stuck a pin lock on for me which I love and while I think it's loud, it's never leaked, seems to be quite good from a mist point of view (saying that I don't know what good and bad is) but I know that as long as I am moving over 30mph it clears a treat.  Seems noisy, but I don't know what a quiet lid is, but I do wear earplugs because my ears used to ring after my 17 mile commute on 60/70 mph roads.  Cost me about £140 just over 2 years ago.

Nice to hear that some of the makes/models I would look at for my next lid are far from perfect.

The problem with buying a lid is it can cost a fortune but there is no way of seeing how it performs before buying.

Watching the footage made me feel sick, such a shocking crash, I feel for Edwards and Rossi too.  I wonder if that will be the last time Edwards rides a moto GP bike?

Such a tragic loss, I've found Moto GP quite dull this year, but Simoncelli had been great to watch.

A very sad week for motorsport with Dan Wheldon's crash too.
