FZS600 Fazer / Tank size
« on: 25 April 2012, 03:31:13 pm »
OK, please feel free to take the p1ss if I'm being blonde here, but....

I was just trying to work out my rough fuel efficiency, so I looked on this site and saw that my bike should have a 20 litre tank.  It's a mk1, registered on an 02 plate, so I'm guessing one of the last box-eye ones.  According to a page on this forum about changes to models, means I've got a 20 litre tank.

This go me thinking..... I always fill up a few miles after the petrol light comes on (usually about 20 ish).  I fill up and it normally costs me about £21 on todays prices so about 15 litres, but a 20 litre tank should cost £28, that's quite a bit of difference.

Is it that the petrol light is set to come on when you efectively have a quarter of the tank left?  Seems a lot to me.

I've been riding in these, pretty much every day for the best part of 3 years, in all sorts of weather.

It was tipping it down on my commute today, nice dry toes when I got to work....I'll be buying these again when they wear out!

General / Re: Kent Fire Bike - Biker Down Course
« on: 23 April 2012, 03:38:17 pm »
I attended the biker down course at Medway Fire Station on Friday and I can honestly say, what a brilliant, informative evening, I can't recommend it enough to all bikers out there.

The evening is briken down into 3 sections

1)  what to do in the event you come across an accident involving a motorcycle, taking control of the situation, personal safety, information the emergency services will need, what to do and what not to do.  This was run by the Biker Down team who are all serving firefighters and bikers.

2)  First aid, focusing heavily on helmet removal.  this was great, it was run by fireservice personel and track medics one of whom has apparently removed over 3000 helmets from injured riders/drivers on the track so they know what they are talking about.

3) A talk about hi vis and being seen, WOW a real eyeopener!  I won't look at high vis in the same way, and will almost certainly be laughing at the legislation that's come into force in France.  Don't get me wrong, it has it's place and can be useful, but isn't the saviour of biking safety.

So, if you live in Kent, get on facebook and like Kent Fire Bike and sign up for the next course.  :)

General / Re: Mod 1 test
« on: 17 April 2012, 01:04:00 pm »
Congrats, just Mod 2 to go.  I was in your shoes almost 2 years ago now.

I was told with regards to Mod 2 that the examiners like to see you make progress, my instructor (toungue slightly in cheek) reckons I passed within the first couple of minutes because we left the test centre (Herne Bay) and went straight on the the dual carriageway, I came off the acceleration lane just as a lorry had passed, a gave a good life saver, straight out in the overtaking lane and overtook him!  Apparently that's how to get on the good side of the examiner!  :D

Practice hill starts and pulling out from being parked up behind a parked car.

Ride confidently with good lifesavers and great road positioning, especially at junctions and you'll be fine!

Sounds interesting, do you have details?  I live in Sittingbourne, Kent so would head down A229 through the Weald (nice riding). Never done a big ride out before.

Is the cable easy to replace?  I've noticed the adjustment at the handlebars is right at the end of it's adjustment and I was thinking of replacing it.

« on: 26 March 2012, 04:31:52 pm »
I never take my lid off and have never been asked to.  BUT, what I do is park bike and put on centre stand.  Take one glove off and take wallet out from pocket and place on the bike.  I always feel this shows the intention to not quickly ride off (i have to put glove back on and take off centre stand) plus maybe they see the wallet.

Might be coinsidence but as I say, helmet always stays on.

I've got an 04 reg Skoda Octavia estate (Laurent and Clemment model with all the bells and whistles)  it was my friend's company car and I bought it from the lease company for peanuts.

It's a FANTASTIC car.  60mpg on a long journey, 48 mpg combined.  comfy, loads of room in the boot.  I'd buy another.  It's currently on 115000 miles, I reckon it's worth a look.

there is a gasket.  When I removed mine to check it disintegrated in my hands.  I bought a new one from Yamaha, think it cost about £6.

What an amazing day for a ride, sometimes I am so glad I commute on the bike, it means I have the bike to hand for days like today.

Amazing weather down here in Kent, popped out at lunch and took the bike through the Wingham Bends (just outside Canterbury), I've not stopped grinning yet...warmer riding weather is coming!  :D

I use a scottoiler too, the outside plates on my chain are beautiful, the inside ones do get a little rusty, I use some castrol GTX that I've had lying around from when I had a petrol engined cage.  put some on a rag and apply at the end of each Friday evening commute, seems to work.

Biker Down - Aimed at motorcyclists of all ages and experience, the free scheme offers the chance to learn practical skills to help avoid being involved in a crash, as well as essential first-aid training and advice on what to do should they find themselves first on the scene of a crash where someone is injured.

Devised by KFRS’s Fire Bike team and delivered by Fire-fighters alongside KFRS Emerge...
ncy Life Support Instructors and Survival Skills Advanced Motorcycle Trainers, the aim is to help reduce biker injuries and fatalities.

The scheme is delivered, free of charge, to participants at local fire stations in small informal groups. The course is made up of three modules, including accident scene management, motorcycle specific first-aid training i.e. CPR, managing major bleeds and helmet removal and classroom-based tuition on group riding techniques.

Participants receive a certificate of attendance, a biker safety pack and first-aid kit designed to be carried under the seat of their bike.

Hi All,

If any of you live in Kent you may be interested in the Biker Down Course run by the Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

Details can be found on Facebook if you search for and "like" Kent Fire Bike.  From there you can register your interest in attending a free course.

I've not been myself as yet, I'm hoping to go to one they are running in April.  From what I can gather it's a mainly first aid course aimed at bikers and especially group riding.  The course also covers what to do in an accident involving a biker, things to look out for, legal things to take not of, etc etc.  It's run by bikers in the Fire service for bikers.

Reading posts on the Kent Fire Bike facebook page the course is well received among those who have attended.

At the end of the day it's free to attend and in my eyes all help gratefully received.  :)

@Stevierst - can't stick any abuse your way, I think what you say is spot on, but it's also I think why so many people are doing so many little rule breaks now; because they know they'll normally get away with it, because as you say a cop is hardly going to spin round and engage in a pursuit after them.

I like your question on the windscreen wipers.  :b

@Steeeve66, I find the ones where the rear light cluster is circular and the indicators are a circular light inside the rear/brake lights.  When the brake lights are on the red from the brakes seems to dull the orange of the indicators, making them less visible.
