Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Here we go again...
« on: 13 May 2019, 04:44:15 pm »
Have you actually totally removed the valve as it is quite possible to trap it in position if it hasn't been put back properly and this will appear as if it is seized? The general consensus is that those aftermarket headers are not worth the money as they ruin the power delivery, you would probably be just as well off removing the EXUP and putting a blanking plate over the hole as you would still have a crap power delivery but a fatter wallet. Best bet is to try to get the EXUP working, you might not need new cables just take one step at a time for now.

Anyone on OEM brake lines should seriously get them replaced on safety grounds, Yamaha suggest a lifespan of 4 years for them !!!! Wezmoto on eBay is your best bet price-wise, exactly the same kit as Hel and the same lifetime warranty.

Have you checked the Reg/Rec cable block under the left hand side of the tank, it's a weak point that suffers with age / corrosion - http://www.yamahafz1oa.com/eskortsdefectiveconnectorreplacement.shtml

« on: 26 April 2019, 11:16:24 am »
Advancer gives a noticeable boost to bottom end and makes cold starting a tad easier, trade off is a slight loss of top end but unless you spend the majority of the time caning the bike the benefits easily outway the costs. Having said that I wouldn't say that it's worth risking engine damage to fit and in this case it's probably best leaving well enough alone unless you take it to a shop to have it fitted and they assume all responsibility .........

« on: 22 April 2019, 04:00:17 pm »
A jack-up kit will definitely have no affect on the peg position as the pegs are mounted to the main frame, I also doubt it will have any discernible affect on ground clearance given how close the pegs are to the swing-arm pivot. Having said that it will improve handling if you don't have a height adjustable shock, will allow you to stretch your legs out a bit more while sat at a standstill, and the bike will feel a better fit given your height, so is worth fitting anyhow.

Tony Archers are very reasonable for seat work, I paid £85 for a complete re-foam and re-cover - https://tonyarcher.co.uk/services/bike-seats/

Be careful with the damping adjusters, use a good coating of vaseline / grease to stop paint getting into them, they need very little excuse to seize.

Go with whatever you can find that fits your budget and height requirements they are not really visible when fitted so not a lot of point getting anything too fancy.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Jack up kit
« on: 31 March 2019, 09:32:56 am »
I would say it is very worthwhile, raising the rear puts more weight on the front of the bike which makes it turn in quicker to very noticeably improve handling, as does raising the forks through the yokes by ~15mm. The jack up kit also slightly adjusts the suspension geometry making the rear shock a little firmer which is also useful if you haven't replaced the rear shock yet. I have tried both 25mm & 50mm jack up kits on the Gen1 the 25mm works well with raising the forks through the yokes but the with the 50mm this puts too much weight on the front from my experience, so it is best to use the 50mm kit with the forks in the standard position.

Sounds good, I'm a similar weight to you and that's what I have in my forks  :thumbup  I found raising the back end helped a lot with handling, I'd reccomend a 25mm Jack-up kit if you're not too short in the leg department - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/K-Yamaha-FZS1000-Fazer-00-05-Jack-Up-Kit-25mm-Dog-Bones-Suspension-Linkages-/223098198451 - I have these fitted along with my Nitron shock at max ride height adjustment.

Yeah another ride is definitely on the cards when it's next mild and dry, I'll PM you on the SWB forum. Did you decide to keep the Fazer?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Pod air filters
« on: 19 November 2018, 05:06:28 pm »
Question comes up fairly regularly, the general answer is it's not a good idea as you will struggle to get the fueling right. If I recall correctly the intake system is designed around the large volume of the airbox for back pressure or resonance or some such, you wont get the same effect with pods so the fueling will be off and not easily fixed.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Ignition advancer Gen1 ?

An advancer makes the bike more tractable at low revs and easier to start which is definitely useful, the trade-off is a slightly lower peak power figure which in the real world you won't notice.

It is easy to fit, the only issue is the retaining bolt which can be pretty tight, I put the bike in gear and blocks under the rear wheel to stop it turning, I'd invest in a replacement gasket before starting the job.

My bike has the full monty and a decent end can, I wouldn't go back to the stock timing.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but you will still get at least the expected cold voltage readings even if you have a dead cell in the battery as the other cells will still be outputting the volts but not the amps. This was explained to me by a battery specialist when I couldn't understand why my battery optimiser was saying the battery voltage was OK but the battery still wouldn't crank over the engine. Needless to say a new battery resolved the issue.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: 143bhp
« on: 26 October 2018, 07:50:09 am »
I don't know if they still do it but manufacturers always used to quote max BHP figures taken from the crank rather than the rear wheel which is most likely where the 143 BHP figure comes from. The rule of thumb is that you get about 15% power loss from the drivetrain between the crank and the rear wheel so from 143 at the crank you would expect around 121.5 at the wheel. Hence if you check Ivan's Dyno Charts you'll see that his benchmark bike at stock made 121.7.

As dazza says with an Ivan's kit you can expect mid 130's or higher if you invest in (if you can find one) a top quality replacement exhaust system.

Can someone post a link to the recommended fuel additive(s) as there are lots of offerings from the different manufacturers - thanks.

Thanks for sharing, I've added a link to this onto the Gen1 FAQ as I'm sure it will benefit others.
