FZS600 Fazer / Sudden change in clutch action
« on: 17 January 2017, 12:39:31 pm »
The clutch action is noticeably lighter today and I've no idea why.  It feels like I'd expect a clutch on a new bike to feel, I can operate it with one finger now.  The slack and bite points are the same as they were before and driveability/useability seem unaffected too.

Last week I rode home in the snow.  Yesterday I gave the bike a clean, but only a general wash down and didn't pay any particular attention to the clutch lever and haven't lubricated it.

Any ideas what's going on - it's unnerving.  I don't like it when things suddenly change what they are doing.

I use the butler to do mine and everything comes up spotlessly clean.

If he's not available then the footman, but the results aren't as good.

You can also address fork dive by either filling forks with heavier fork oil (15weight instead of 10weight) or by reducing the size of the air gap within the forks slightly.

That's interesting, how much is 'slightly' though?  What would be the effect of too much - reduced travel?

I'd try putting some standard plugs back in it.  It may not be the problem, but it's a cheap thing to try.

Personally, I'd advise against doing the High beam one.   I did, due to the aforementioned comment of it being too dim during the day.

The problem is, when you actually use it when it's needed (i.e. it's dark), the LED light is so bright it's distracting.  I swapped back to the standard bulb.

Not too difficult to do, done it a few times now, trying different bulbs.

No need to remove the fairing, just the screen.  With that out you can unplug the wiring going into the back, and get the access you need to the 3x 10mm nuts holding the cluster to the frame.  With the cluster out, theres about 8 cross head screws to open it up.  There are 3 bulb holders that 1/4 turn to remove, then you just pull the bulb out and put the new one in.  I recommend that you plug the harness back in and test all the bulbs before you re-assemble anything.

Another 'listening' tip, is a short piece of hose, 12-24 inches long would do.  Stick one end in (or near  :o ) you ear, then move the other end around the engine to narrow down where the noise is coming from.

I don't think it works - have you seen the state of the chain they are 'cleaning' with it?

I used Halfrauds High Temp Engine Enamel.  They do it in gloss, matt and satin (and red?)    I went with the satin to tidy things up (not a full repaint) and it matched really well.  Was a good match to tidy up the wheels too.

I wrapped some insulation tape aroung the bar to increase it's diameter, making it a compression fit rather than glue. (I did spray with hairspray too though - for some lubrication when fitting, and just a bit of bite when dried).

Wrap from the inside to out, so that the overlaps are the right way round and don't snag when pushing the grip on.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Tyre inflaters for underseat
« on: 18 July 2016, 01:35:07 pm »
Thanks for all the replies.

I've got a new tyre on order and went with an AA branded inflator to keep me on the road until I get it fitted.  Can't believe how small it is. Even when still in the box I could it 4 or 5 more of them under the seat.  I think I was worrying too much about the size.

Im looking for a 12v one really, something that can top up a slow puncture when needed. I have seen the CO2 canisters,  but they are one use only.
I need to get some idea of which ones are small enough to fit, as I don't want to waste money on one that's too big.

Anyone got some recommendations for a tyre inflater that will fit under the seat?

I contact Herts and Beds police about the footage I get.  The repsonse I got (from the same person for both forces !?) was that unless there was an actual incident then they don't want it.
Regardless of whether the footage shows someone clearly, they would still want you, as a witness to attend court to testify.

No experience of this problem on a bike, but on a car I used to have I got those symptoms from a sticky starter solenoid.

A common fix was to whack it with a hammer to free it off, but the best solution was to get a new one.

FZS600 Fazer / Checking engine mounts
« on: 29 June 2016, 12:54:45 pm »
I'm getting lots of vibes from the engine through the frame, and want to check the engine mount(s).

Not sure what that entails though.

What and where do I need check and what might be wrong?

Who did you pay to do the repairs?  If you paid the AA as part of their service then your contract and complaint is with them.  Depending on the level of cover you took, I suspect the AA may only liable for the recovery/transportation of the car to a repairer.  If you then pay the repairers bill, then you complain to Halfords.

Whether it was AA recommended/approved isn't relevant as you the customer would have the right of choice.

Bumped it up to 1K when warm (sounds too fast  :D )

Seems to have sorted the problem.  Thanks all.

800 to 900RPM is too low. I'm surprised it can keep running that low. The manual says 1150 to 1250RPM.

I didn't know that.  Perhaps all is fine then, I just need to tweek the idle speed up a bit.

« on: 13 May 2016, 01:05:13 pm »
I'm on my second fazer now. The first one (2000) didn't have these symptoms and ran fine, so I know there is somehting not right about this one (2003)

In short, the bike struggles to run on cold startup without choke.  It doesn't need full choke, just enough to get it to idle above 900rpm.
Without choke it will start, but idles very low (600rpm and slowly drops) and will stall within a minute unless I intervene with a touch of throttle.   This is even now, when the weather is warm and it shouldn't need any choke.

Once the bike has been run a while the idle is normal, approx 8-900rpm, so the idle adjustment is OK.

The bike is garaged, I replaced with new plugs a couple of months ago.  It has a K&N filter and a Scorpion exhaust (without baffle).

Any ideas?  Is there anything other than the idle speed I can adjust?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Help me to diagnose/fix knocking through footpegs
« on: 16 March 2016, 02:31:35 pm »
You mean put a penny washer between the exhaust and the mount here (middle of pic).

What's the logic behind that?  Could it be something that was missed when the previous owner replaced the system?

As for the pivot bearings, I can't detect any movement.  I can't tell if it's my technique or if there's no problem.   I'm assuming you have to have the back wheel out to be able to get to the lower shock mount, so will have to find some time to pull it all apart and check with no loading on it.

FZS600 Fazer / Help me to diagnose/fix knocking through footpegs
« on: 14 March 2016, 12:28:24 pm »
I have 2 distinct, but different scenarios where I am feeling knocking through the footpegs (both sides).  I have recently replaced the chain and sprockets, and the symptoms are the same as before:

Symptom 1 - engine vibes.  During the normal lumpy band 5.5-6K revs I get the knocking.  Happens in all gears, feels stronger in lower gears. Occurs when accelarating up and when letting off and slowing down, although to a lesser degree on the way down.   It's nice and smoooth, no knocking above and below that rev range. My previous fazer of 3 years had the same rough patch, but didn't vibrate through the pegs.

Symptom 2 - rough road.  Not really that rough, just some slighly broken up tarmac, or odd bumps.  Kind of feels a big more like grinding, but is still felt through both pegs.

I've tried moving the swing arm to see if the bearings are shot, but there is no movement. Not sure if I need to remove the wheel shock linkage to get rid of any pre-load.

Not sure if they could both be from the same thing, based on the similar feeling, but I'd like to cure both of them.

Any ideas?

I buy it in four litre tins it's only about £9

I prefer the aerosol cans personally.

I buy the big tins too, and a manual pump sprayer.  Cheaper to buy and more controllable too.

Make sure you get one with resistant seals, otherwise they fail and it doesn't spray anymore.

If you've just changed the plugs it could have significantly changed the spark/fire characteristics, meaning you don't need as much choke angle/duration as you are used to.

I've recently changed my for the first time since owning the bike.  Before the change I needed choke on for a couple of miles before I could take it off and not stall.  With new plugs I can take it off after a couple of hundred yards.
