Check out the Mobius, I have one and its excellent...

http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2013/7/8/the-mobius-camera-the-do-it-all-mount-anywhere-1080p-micro-c.html

It also has a bit of a scene community and you can get lens ribbon extenders etc so you can maximise how you mount it with the body tucked away and the lens on a remote lead to poke through fairings etc

It also has cheap replacement parts and a capacitor to replace the battery if your using it a lot with power running to it

Thanks! That's now my first choice.

Thanks all. Based on feedback, here are my current possible choices considering my (lack of) budget.

103
I've been googling and googling and it's just a flood of SEO spam and vague information, so i'm coming here in the hope of getting some hands-on recommendations.
I'm not after a go-pro or anything so fancy, i just want a camera to back me up in case of accident etc. Not looking to start a youtube channel, and i can't even consider the big-brands as i'm just poor.

The present seasonal down-turn in weather and what seems to be an increase in inattentive drivers is starting to make me worry, so i figure this may at least help in the event of an incident.

Ok, so let's move on to needs

  • 480p @30FPS minimum (720p would be nice)
  • Swappable memory card
  • Passable low-light recording
  • Rain proof
  • Record on power (from bike, so it'd be wired in and rain-proof or at least a 1.5/2hr battery life)
  • Reliable mount for use on handlebars
  • Overwrites old files if mem card is full (so record in X minute chunks, i guess)
  • Easy enough to remove the unit from the mount when i park the bike, but secure enough to not fall off while braving our obviously well-kept roads.
Refurbs/2nd hand acceptable, would rather not have no-name import junk if i can avoid it or unless someone has one and can vouch for the quality/suitability.
One current consideration is the Hitachi HDSV01U

So far, it looks like my options are thus:

Cheap option: Generic action cam. About £40 all in.
Passable with an average battery life.

Economy option: SJ4000. About £65 all in.
Seems the best trade-off with features and cost. Added advantage of better battery life, and GoPro accessory compatibility.

Upper option: Mobius. About £85 all in.
A good option if i want to really mess around with things and there are plenty of DIY bits for it.

Getting expensive: GoPro Hero. About £115>£130 all in.
Best battery life and quality.

--
My other option is a used Drift HD, but i haven't included this in the above list as it'd be an item i'd have to bid on, isn't new, and so forth.

i use 758's love em but you need lower risers - i grind off the nibs then were the switch gear goes 3 wraps of insulation tape and never had em move

Interesting solution. I had my Renthanls (748's i think) drilled to hold the switches, but i'm not 100% on the positioning.

Went out to Bruntingthorpe airfield to have a look around. From Central Leicester. Fun ride with friends who just got a ZZR.

106
Make sure you're getting the right caliper.

The FZ1 caliper wont fit. only the blue spot one from the fzs1000 01-05 will fit.

Chris

Thanks for the heads-up on that!

Today; I finally got the speedo mount shaped how i want it so that the instruments sit as neatly as i can get them.

It's now so snug that i don't even need bolts to hold the speedo on. Still used bolts, though...

108
Yes and yes. But fzs600 bracket needs a little filing off and you'll need a couple of washers to centre caliper. Ive put post on my blog with some snaps or search past posts on here as others had some good pics too.

Thanks, had a look through, found the info. Appreciated.

109
Nope, stick with FZS600 bracket. FZ1 bracket isn't compatible.
FZS600 hose fits.
If you fancy the matching tension/torque arm, you'll need the one off an Thunderace.

Cool, so:

Calliper from an FZ1 IS compatible and WILL fit existing FZS600 bracket
Bracket is NOT
?

110
Just a thought at this point.

Thinking of replacing the rear brake calliper on my '99 Fizzy with an FZ1 rear brake calliper.
Why? Cosmetic reasons. The front and rear brake callipers don't match. The rear is a generic looking calliper.

Would i also need the bracket for an FZ1 rear brake?

I was just unsure unsure of what you meant, while also thinking I knew (as I want to spray mine too), but was put off when you had a head gasket in your list on ebay! I reckon the cylinder head cover can be removed with almost everything insitu, if you have the right allen keys.

Good idea with the vinyl! I'll bear that in mind :D Good about the glare too, my clocks are mounted similarly, but at a different angle (less flat) and get a little glare at times. The size of them is one of my biggest bug-bears too! I wish they were more subtle and smaller!

I'm VERY tempted to get a Koso DB01+ as the standard speedo really is massive. Also considering some standard dials.

As for removing the head covers; Tools aren't an issue, thankfully. My technical skills, however.... ;)

Vinyl is pretty cheap on ebay, and you don't need a huge amount to get it all done. Just be aware that you may need some good spray adhesive on the back to keep the edges from peeling up, which i'm having a problem with. Also: Get the good stuff: 3M vinyl is a decent option.

I'm quite tempted to relocate the ignition and just move the speedo all the way back. But yeah; Would rather get the Koso...

See, this is why i like it here. People ask questions, accept answers and offer insight. Not judgement. Excellent :D

Thanks for those suggestions. I'll certainly look into them.
The rear pegs have been used a few times and seem to be standing up to the rubbing pretty well so far. I've also wrapped some black vinyl around the mounts to help reduce wear and discolouration. They're also working well, though application was a pain and didn't go perfectly.

Sunlight doesn't seem to be much of a problem, certainly haven't had any moments where i've noticed glare. At least none that i can remember.

I'll keep the powdercoating in mind for when i can afford it. I also want to get my wheels done properly. The front is a spray can job i did, and it turned out pretty good, considering. The rear is in reasonable condition, but could do with some love. Tempted to go for.. not black. Not sure yet. Would also get several other bits coated at the same time. Mostly the top yoke, bar end weights, risers and maybe the forks, as i sprayed those myself, too.

I guess i do mean the valve covers, but i'm just going on what the manual is calling them:

I fully accept i may be wrong, though.

I've now made some additions/adjustments to the lists based on your suggestions.

Small difference in performance, big difference in pocket savings when you never have to replace it again.

Bike looks good though - what fork gaiters did you use? I've got some old style rubber ones on mine, but after less than a summer of UV exposure they've fallen apart. I like all the small details being black - pegs front and rear, but I'm surprised you didn't do your swingarm at the same time? I've done mine and it looks much better. (powdercoated or painted btw?)

Thanks.
I used some Acerbis motorcross neoprene gaiters. Cut them in half to cover top and bottom, stretched and secured with jubilee clips and cable ties.

The pegs etc are just spray canned black. Powder coating costs money i don't have, but would very much like to do the swingarm. I imagine it'll take a few days to get a good coat of primer on there, then there's the several thick coats of paint, then several of lacquer to seal it all in.

Or maybe i could just primer and coat it in VHT black, though i'm also thinking of doing it a matching grey, which i also want to use to paint the cylinder head covers, but that requires a new gasket which is about £30. One option is to buy a spare swingarm, paint that and then just swap it out. It'd certainly keep my bike on the road, and given that it's my only transport, that's a good thing.

Also: Time of year. If i do it now, it'll only get ruined over winter. Very much want to do it, though, so will have to wait until spring. It'll be around that time i'll also get the paint work buffed professionally as well as adding yamaha decals and getting some more lacquer on there to really finish it off.

I'm also tempted to get some C&C'd foot pegs (silver, maybe) front and rear, and some matching grips. But that's all cosmetics, and i have a large list of that stuff... Here's a rough collection of the cosmetics on ebay, and another of other items i'm thinking of. Nothing is set as yet, and some are just there as place-holders. It's all part of the plan to get the bike finished to a standard i'm happy with and before the start of next summer, with luck money.

100% K&N filter

Easily noticeable improvement, then?

115
hi.... can you help with hard drive problems...... my laptop has become embarrassingly slow.... i need some recommended free software to clean up hard drive and remove any excess crap that's slowing it down.... cheers

Defrag it. Run disk cleanup. Delete some crap.

Might not be a hard drive problem, though. Could be any number of things from being clogged up with tonnes of apps, maybe too many apps in the system tray, hardware problems, or malware/virus. Too many potential issues to go through, and this isn't a tech-support forum/topic..well, not for computers, anyway ;)

I'd suggest trying the defrag/cleanup, run a virus scan etc. If that doesn't help: Find a local PC repair place (and check to make sure they have good reviews etc), then take it there. Failing that: Find a local friend who is good with computers. Buy them some beer or whatever in exchange.

Want more pictures? Pictures of the bike before work?

Here's an album of progress so far (Dropbox link, so will constantly be updated, most are high-res).
Here's how it was when i got it (Also dropbox/high-res).
All sorted by date and with descriptives in file name.
I'd have done a nice little album in imgur, but it was being a tit.

AVG Free has done me proud all these years, no need to change what ain't broke!  :)
I used to always have a hooky version of AVG that a friend got me. When we bought our last computer my MRS wanted everything Kosher so she paid for the  full fat version, somewhere around £40 odd a year. No different to all the free and counterfeit version we've had in the past except cost £40 a year.

If you're still paying £40/year. Stop. Try the Comodo antivirus app i linked to. Free. Good. Not AVG and will not chew up system resources as much.

118
Back light? That's a bit lah dee dah isn't it.  What's wrong with timing your glance when a streetlight flashes it's luminating glow across it :)

I guess i'm just too upper-class for my own good.

119
Asda sell mountain bike computers for a fiver.  I used one on my crf450 enduro, they work well enough, waterproof, power up automatically.  If your in need it's a nice simple way to get one on a bike.  I took the bike out without it for the first ride.  I thought it was all good until I had to negotiate a speed camera...

I have something similar. I might have considered using it if there was a way to make the backlight stay on when activated, rather than turning off after 6 seconds.

120
On music, I also recommend Grooveshark. It's like Spotify, but free! Listening to Meatloaf there now.  :)

Likewise, there's also ShoutCast (anything and everything on various channels) and Digitally Imported, but that's all electronic genres. Both are free.

121
I post a fair bit on here, asking for help. I figured it was about time i gave a little something back.

Here's a list of mostly free/safe etc software for Windows (Mostly related to Win7 and up, but most will work on Vista or XP) that almost all of us can find useful.

Internet, security and safer browsing.

Firefox (obvious, i know), or if you use a 64bit install; Waterfox.
Recommended addons for fire/waterfox:
  • Adblock Plus (because who wants to see adverts?)
  • Betterprivacy (For vastly reduced tracking cookie bullshit)
  • British English Dictionary (It surprises me how many people are using the default US dictionary)
  • FaceBook Purity (Lets you filter out all of the crap on facebook, tells you when people have deleted you, and lets you remove things by keyword)
  • Ghostery (Another privacy addon to stop advert tracker cookies)
  • HTTPS everywhere (Automatically selects a secure connection to a website if supported)
  • iReader (one you'll use occasionally, but appreciate when you do - It's a little button which shows a pop-up of JUST the article on a page, and not the other crap)
  • New Tab Homepage (Instead of the default page, you can set any page you like as your home page for when you open a new tab)
  • No YouTube comments (Because they'll all worthless, anyway)
A lot, if not all, of these are available in Chrome, too. Using Internet Explorer? Stop that.

Let's move on to Firewalls. You need one of those. Get Comodo.
I agree the website looks a little spammy, but i assure you it's fine. I've been using it for quite a few years.

This one is a firewall, antivirus and (dodgy app) behaviour blocker, too. It's also free for the basic version which does all of that. The paid version includes tech support. Granted; If you get the version with all the fancy features; It will ask a lot of questions to begin with, but once it's done, it's amazingly good.

Internet storage / cloud storage
Dropbox. Excellent service, supports everything. Sycns files over said everything. 2GB free storage, but both you and I get a little more from this referral link.

http://keepass.info/
Keepass (Free, has windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone, Win Phone support, can link through dropbox so you have all your passwords all the time)

Most people use the same username or even the same password for everything. That's how you get your accounts broken into and your dodgy nudes splashed over the internet.

With Keepass you have only to remember ONE password to unlock the database file, then you can store and create lists of sites/usernames/passwords as much as you like. It even has a feature to generate a password for you, and to tell you how strong it is.

Now you can have a different username and very strong password for every site you visit.

Music and video playback
For music, i use Musicbee. It's free, it's awesome, it looks great, works equally great.
I used to love WinAmp, but it's glory days are LONG gone.

For films and TV programs, XBMC (now named Kodi) is an excellent, free choice. It's a nice visual way to browse what you have, it can even grab all the info and covers from the internet.

Tagging a sorting music, fixing the sound levels.
I use MP3tag (free) to get all the info on my music collection correct, get it all tagged with the proper info and in whatever way i choose. It's very powerful, but also easy to use if you just want to stick to the basic features. It can also organise your collection for you if you like.

To keep all the music at the same volume; I use MP3gain. It analyses each track and adds a tag to the file to tell a music player how much to turn it up or down. No direct editing of the file at all.

Backups
Yes, you should backup data. Often.
Use FreeFileSync. It's excellent.

Office
No, you don't have to use Microsoft products. There are some great free alternatives which can both read and write in MS formats, so you don't lose compatibility. Try LibreOffice.

Updating non-windows apps, the easy way.
Ninite is a great solution to keep other apps current and secure. It automatically skips the 'option' to install toolbars or whatever else.

That'll do for now. If there's interest, i might expand this to include such things as: Linux and Mac apps, and maybe some more specific software for everything from mass naming files, to tweaking how windows works and so forth.

122
Heard rumours about this wire back to the ecu, but there's been a few on here to contradict that. I think it's a case of 'suck it and see'.

As for riding with no Speedo, can you not mount your smartphone on there with a Speedo app? Or a satnav?

Gotta be better than getting nicked for not having a Speedo fitted ;D

Actually; You don't have to have one. But if you DO have one, it has to work, and it has to show or be able to show both MPH and KPH.
But yes; Valid point about phone app/sat-nav.

123
I fitted a Koso clock to my old R1 a couple of years ago. I decided to make my own multi plug loom out an old set of clocks. Not as simple as it sounds!

The majority of the wiring was easy, just the fuel gauge had me stumped. (it wasn't compatible in the end)

The instructions are pretty clear, just download a wiring diagram for the Fazer. (get a colour one if you can!!)

Worth it in the end though.

Well, at least i know it's somewhat possible.
I have a manual for the bike and i know which wires do what for the instrument cluster connector (as above) and which wires do what on the Koso speedo.

I hear rumour that one would need to loop a particular wire back to the ECU when using a custom speedo to avoid some kind of running issue?
I think that's probably the larger concern, though i could see if it'd be a problem by maybe going for a test ride without the instruments connected... Just as long as i avoid speed-camera areas just in case my estimation of speed isn't up to the task...

124
Struggling to get/find information on this.

I'm looking to get rid of my standard cluster as my 99 FZS600 is a bit of a streetfighter (not much, just a bit) and the instrument cluster is massive.
I'd like to fit either a KOSO DB01 or some more traditional pot gauges (on the small side).

I'm facing a number of problems, some of which maybe you can help with:

1. I need info regarding the fitting/wiring of a Koso to a Fazer. Problems? Solutions?
2. Info about other speedo's you've fitted. Recommendations? Issues?
3. Have a used Koso speedo you want to sell for a nice price? Maybe some small pot gauges?

What i DO have is a wiring diagram to connect a Koso DB01 to a FZS600, so i *think* it'd just be a case of snipping wires before the connector and adding connections per-wire and mating them to the equivalent wire on the Koso.

Here's that diagram:

And here's an idea of what i could do with the instruments compared to how the OEM part is currently mounted.

I'd be more than happy to go for the 'Cafe' option above, but finding matching gauges for reasonable money is proving amazingly difficult. Most gauges with a backlight cost a damn fortune and i wouldn't know how to connect them to the bike.

Realistically; I only need a speedo and fuel warning light. But a speedo with matching rev counter and built-in idiot lights would be great. I don't know. I'm just testing the waters to see what i can and can't get away with as i think how i currently have the bike set up looks a bit clumsy and messy.

125
Why not buy a  top yolk from the breakers and cut the Ignition lock section off so the yolk is straight across allow you fit the standard clocks closer to the Yolk.
You could remount the ignition on the side of the frame near the horn or thermostat housing, only disadvantage is that you will no longer have a steering lock

It's certainly an option. I'll agree there.
