FZS600 Fazer / Gear box shaft replacement
« on: 22 July 2012, 01:04:53 pm »
It looks like the thread on the end of the gear box shaft has been damaged by the locknut coming loose from the front sprocket. Anybody know how big a job to is to get it replaced or whether the end can have a new thread cut in? Any idea on cost for labour etc would be useful if I have to take it to the local mechanic.

You need to check. When I went into the dealers at Huddersfield and mentioned the modded nut, they said that the modded nut would automatically replace the original one. It doesn't. The one that they ordered from Yamaha was the 9mm nut and it has a different part number to the 12mm nut. The nut and lock washer come separately.

Not done this route but
A57 to ladybower resevoir ,A6187 to Castleton ,then back to MC on A624

And from Ladybower you could always go over Strines Moor up to near Stocksbridge, you could could have a chuckle at your mate going around the hairpin bends  :lol

The 'ideal' road for a cruiser! The hairpins are terrible. More like motocross with the gravel and debris covering them from all the rain we've had.

Mine started doing that and it was the nut that had come loose holding on the front chain sprocket.

Ponkster, there's no chance of your nut coming off as you ride if you can't shift it! Mine had come completely loose and had had all the inner thread worn off by the spindle. Just keep an eye on it.

Got a new nut (the 9 mm deep one) and new lock washer and fitted them yesterday. Out today for a 100 miles before the GP. Amazing the difference: reduced vibration and no issues with low revs running. I was thinking the carbs were out but obviously not. Had to invest in a 32mm socket and half inch breaker bar. Still going to order the deeper 12mm nut and replace it for peace of mind.

I got this mesh textile outfit. Much, much cooler and more comfortable than leathers in the heat. Mine were relatively cheap. I got it in black, with matching trousers.

FZS600 Fazer / Nut size?
« on: 12 June 2012, 07:33:05 pm »
Hello

Does anyone know which size spanner/socket is needed for the large nut that secures the front sprocket on a 2001 FZS 600? None of mine are large enough (sockets, not my nuts, of course).

Thanks.

Thanks for the replies.

Ordered one off Wemoto. I do my own oil and filter changes and hand tighten filter. Sometimes its still a bugger to get off because access isn't easy with the pipes. last change, I spent 15 minutes swearing and vowing I'd get a oil wrench filter before the next change. So I have. :)

My PR2s are just about ready to need changing and they've done 7000 miles in all weathers. Very impressive grip levels. I'll be replacing with same.

I used to do a lot of cycling and found that my glasses misted up. I used the washing up liquid on the inside of the lens and then polished it off and it does work for a while.

General / Strange sight today
« on: 26 February 2012, 07:34:15 pm »
Just dropped the kids off at the local sports club this morning in Huddersfield. Waiting at the junction to pull out when along came 6 Lambrettas/Vespas with riders in full Mod gear AND in the middle of this 60s timewarp an FZ1 ridden by someone dressed in 'normal' bike gear.

I hope he wasn't going too far with them. 90 miles to Scarborough at 60mph and plenty of stops to let the engines cool down won't be much fun. Still, be good for fuel economy: might even get 200  miles before having to refuel :)

The A65 is crap IMO. Too much traffic unless its VERY early. The Dales only gets good once you get past Settle and head up to Hawes.

Fridaythorpe Cafe or Willingham Woods offer quieter roads. This weekend will be relatively mild (8 deg on Saturday). I'll probably be heading out to Brid then return to Fridaythorpe Cafe for about 11.30 am Sat or Sun.

I'm Huddersfield based but do most of my riding in Lincolnshire or North Yorkshire with Summer blasts up to Northumberland and Cumbria. Some good riding round Huddersfield/Peaks as well.

Well done. Keep it up.

I've stopped 16 years but even now, every now and again, I get a MASSIVE craving for a fag. Sat having a tea at Willingham Woods Bike cafe this afternoon and I could have just had one.

Like others, I replaced fags with exercise. You'll never regret the day you gave up. You need to keep busy and try changing your routines so that you can avoid those moments when you normally have a cig. In the pub I used to have to sit on the hand that wasn't holding my pint because it felt so odd not doing anything with it.
