General / Scuffed someone's bumper...
« on: 21 April 2018, 12:42:51 pm »
Yesterday, whilst rolling my bike back, I managed to misjudge my position and put a scuff on someone's bumper :(

Fortunately (-ish) it was someone I knew and since it was only a slight scratch, I offered to buy them a repair kit to deal with it.

There are lots of options out there, although some are for reparing breaks, which I don't need, so can anyone recommend something cheap and easy?

General / FZ6 Front Sprocket Hooked
« on: 31 July 2017, 01:13:06 pm »
About 6000 miles ago, I replaced both front and rear sprockets and the chain with a DID Gold X Ring set.

I've had up to 18,000 miles out of a chain and sprocket set before, I've always kept the tension adjusted properly and have a Scotoiler on it to keep it lubed, but the front sprocket has become noticably hooked. The rear is ok and so is the chain.

I know the advice is to always change the whole lot in one go, but is this really necessary? I've read that the front tends to wear more than the rear, so can I just put a new front one on?

General / Adjusting Clutch Cable on FZ6
« on: 14 May 2017, 07:09:29 pm »
I need to adjust the clutch cable on my FZ6, but the adjuster by the clutch lever is already all the way out.

The Haynes manual says to remove the tank, battery and airbox to get access to the other adjuster which is down between the frame and the engine, but I don't want to have to do all that if I don't have to.

If I lift the tank I can see the adjuster, but there's not enough gap to get tools into the space.

So does anyone have any suggestions to sort this out without all the palaver of removing the battery and airbox?

General / FZ6 dragging brakes?
« on: 21 March 2017, 06:24:04 pm »
Recently, when trying to get my FZ6 out of the shed, I found it very difficult to push and found that the front brakes were seeming to drag on the discs.

There's always been a bit of noise when pushing it because of the twin-pot floating caliper design, but this was worse than that.

I've squirted some brake cleaner behind the pads and pushed them back with a screwdriver between them which helped (it doesn't feel like it requires more than the usual effort to push), but I've got an MOT coming up pretty soon and I'm a bit concerned that the front wheel doesn't spin freely enough (if I give it a good shove with my hand it only makes about half a revolution before coming to a stop because of drag from the brakes).

I really don't want to have to disassemble the calipers if I don't have to, so does anyone have any useful suggestions or comments?

General / FZ6 Headset Bearings
« on: 15 February 2017, 11:37:28 pm »
Pretty much ever since my FZ6 has needed an MOT, I've had Advisories on the Headset Bearings (either loose or notchy).

The next MOT is coming up soon and I'm thinking it might be good to get them seen to (and replaced if needed) but I've heard that it can take around 4 hours and cost a couple of hundred quid or so for labour and given that I'm porbably going to need a new rear tyre as well, that's going to be very expensive :(

So can anyone confirm if that is how much it's likely to cost and if there's anything else I can do to get them sorted (or, at least, stop it failing the MOT)?

General / Stuck footpeg pivot pin
« on: 22 January 2017, 04:15:41 pm »
A few days ago, the right footpeg on my FZ6 sheared off. I've got a replacement, but I'm unable to remove the old pin.   :(

I've used a Dremel to cut off the head of the old securing split pin, but, despite the application of lots of WD 40 and 3-in-1 penetrating oil and tapping it with a rubber headed mallet, the old pivot pin just doesn't want to shift.

I don't have access to a blow-torch etc and I don't think a cigarette lighter is up to the job to heat it and help it move.

Anyone got any useful suggestions for how to shift it?

General / Traffic update...
« on: 22 December 2016, 10:46:03 pm »
A lorry overturned on the M27 earlier today, spilling its load of Vicks Vaporub over all three lanes.

The Police have managed to get the traffic moving again, and don’t expect any congestion for the next eight hours.

General / Injunction taken out against bikers in Harlow
« on: 22 May 2016, 12:10:02 am »
WTF??

Quote
Bikers in Harlow are being warned about a new injunction that comes into force today banning them from taking part in unauthorised ride outs.

Ok, if people are ridiing stupidly or anti-socially, then doing something about it is ok. But punishing all bikers for the actions of an irresponsible minority??

April 2016 - Surface Dressing on the Morestead Road:
Surface dressing of roads between Morestead and Corhampton from 14 April
A road surface dressing treatment will be undertaken between Morestead and Corhampton, along a route including Morestead Road, Belmore Lane, Stakes Lane and Corhampton Lane, beginning on 14 April.
Weather permitting, the works are expected to take five working days to complete, with a further two-day phase one week later.
There will be road closures on individual sections of the route between 9.30am and 4pm each day. A diversion around the whole route will be in place throughout the works.
The roads will be closed to through traffic.
Morestead Road will be treated first, from the end of the new surfacing near the junction of the old drovers’ track, Old Down Lane, to the Longwood Road junction. Access will be maintained to Hazeley Road and Jackman’s Hill, at all times.
This will be followed by Belmore Lane, from the Longwood Road junction to the junction with Salt Lane and Stakes Lane, then Stakes Lane will be treated, followed by Corhampton Lane to the junction with the B3035.
As part of the treatment process, there will be loose chippings on the road surface for a short time, and drivers are advised to drive as slowly as possible to prevent damage to cars at this time. Signs will be put up to warn road users of the risk, and the loose material will be removed by a mechanical sweeper as soon as possible after the treatment.
A week later, a further two-day closure will be implemented, for a final treatment that will help to make the dressing on the roads more resilient to the impact of heavy traffic and wet winter weather.

FZ6 / Fazer / Changing FZ6 Fazer Rear Brake Pads
« on: 13 March 2016, 09:03:07 pm »
I need to replace the rear pads on my FZ6 (04-06 model) and, according to Haynes, I need to put a piece of tube over the bleed nipple when I push the pistons back into the caliper.

What I don't know is what size tube I need (or how much).

It suggests putting the end into a "suitable container", but if I have a long enough length of tube (securing it to the grab rail for instance), surely I wonldn't need to as it would just flow up into the tube and I could avoid getting any bubbles into the system.

Anyone know if this would work or got any helpful advice?

General / I've got a screw loose...
« on: 26 October 2015, 10:59:16 pm »
Well, actually a couple of them!

I have the Power Commander III with the multi-map option and the screws that hold the switch onto the handlebar bracket have hallen out (probably vibrated loose).

According to the people at PC, they are #2-56 x 3/8 Phillips Pan Head Machine Screws

Does anyone have a couple of these (and maybe a couple more as spares) that they could let me have so I don't have to buy a packet of 100 of them?

General / 100 nm without a torque wrench
« on: 29 July 2015, 08:21:34 pm »
I've finally got around to replacing the chain and sprockets on my FZ6, but I've hit a little snag...

The Haynes manual says the bolts on the rear sprocket should be tightened to 100nm, but my torque wrench only goes up to 50nm... :(

So how do I get to 100nm?

General / Equity Red Star
« on: 15 July 2015, 07:23:48 pm »
The insurance on my FZ6 is up for renewal, but when I got the quote from Bennetts, instead of the £178 (including Legal Expenses Cover and RAC) that I had last year, it was over £600!

So I phoned up to check and this time it wasn't the insurers taking the pi$$ bumpting up the renewal, but the fact that, for some reason, Equity Red Star (who'd always been willing to cover my bike previously since I got it in 2007) decided that, this time, they weren't going to do so.

Eventually, after some faffing around, I got the quote down to £206, but even when I tried Carole Nash, they came up with a similar figure. (I can get a quote around the £80 mark, but the Power Commander adds £70 to it).

Has anyone else had an issue like this recently?

FZ6 / Fazer / FZ6 Spark Plugs
« on: 09 July 2015, 11:47:51 pm »
I've just bought a new set of plugs for my FZ6-SA (2006), but noticed that I've been sent CR9E plugs which have a single "horn" going over the electrode, rather than a pair (one each side) as the standard ones on the bike have which are, apparently, CR9EK plugs.

Is there a difference between the two more than just the design or are these ok to use?

General / Copper slip on Exhaust Studs?
« on: 22 May 2015, 12:51:23 pm »
Whilst looking at somethng else on my bike I noticed that the exhaust stud bolts were somewhat(!) rusty.

Although I have no need to remove the downpipes at the moment, having seen various posts about people snapping off studs etc when trying to take them off, it occurred to me that it might be a good bit of preventative maintenance to do so before they end up corroded solid.

If I do, would applying coper slip grease to the threads before re-attaching them be a good idea?

Four motorcyclists in hospital after A32 collision

Quote
Four motorcyclists are in Southampton General Hospital tonight after a collision in West Meon near Fareham - with one having been airlifted to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

Hampshire Police are investigating the accident on the A32 towards Fareham just before 8pm. The road will remain closed for a few hours. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to call them on 101 quoting Operation Direction.

NB There has been a lot of speculation, rumour and gossip on Facebook and in other places about what happenend in this incident. I'd be grateful if we didn't do that here, I'm just posting this so if anyone was there and has any information they can contact the Police.

Your Suggestions and How you can help / Foc-U and Facebook
« on: 23 April 2015, 04:07:17 pm »
Someone was asking a question about a Fazer on a Facebook forum, so I put a link in to the Foc-U forums and the image that came up alongside it appears to be pie, chips and beans!

Now I've got nothing against a nice bit of nosh like that, but perhaps having something more Fazer related might be good?
