Introduction / Re: Good evening from Herts

Hi Chris, I'm in St Albans and ride a gen 1, which is anything up to and including the 2005 model. What year is yours? I recently had mine serviced and asked the mechanic to service the exup valve, only to discover that a previous owner had cut the cables! Worth checking on yours.

It might be worth looking at the Honda X11. Google that and you'll find a YouTube review by MenAndMotors.

It's essentially a naked Blackbird; a very smooth and refined 1100cc that's been proven to be bulletproof.

I know a highly experienced biker that has been riding gen 1 Fazers for years. In fact owning one at a time has never been enough and he often had a couple of runners and one for spares. Until recently.

A good friend of his is a Blackbird enthusiast and kept going on about them so much that he bought one from him. He enjoyed riding it but unfortunately the riding position lead to discomfort on longer journeys. He learnt about the X11 and bought an example from eBay for approx £1,500, if I'm not mistaken.

Now this is a man who was a devout Fazer owner and kept banging on about how the Fazer was the best all-round bike he'd ever ridden; that he couldn't imagine ever finding a bike more suitable, that he would go to his grave a happy and fulfilled man thanks to the inspired vision of Naoki Segawa and Yutaka Kubo.

And now? The Blackbird has gone, but that was expected. However, his dearly beloved, much pampered and cossetted Gen 1 FZS 1000 is likely to go to pastures new. I personally feel that will be a step too far when it comes to the crunch, but he does seem pretty determined!

This is the man who's words of wisdom and passion for the FZS 1000 lead me to buy one despite having previously loved an Aprillia Shiver 750; a grunty twin that's light, powerful and surprisibgly smooth.

I haven't ridden the X11, but I did ride the Blackbird and the levels of refinement were sublime. The X11 is tuned for more low to mid-range torque and my friend clearly loves it.

My sights are set on a BMW S1000R. IMHO it seems to be the modern successor to the wonderful Gen 1 Fazer that so many people on this forum love, including myself of course! The BMW doesn't come cheap though and a Fazer or X11 will give you a shed load of bike on a budget. For outright value, fun and availability of great second hand models, I think the Fazer still has it. The X11 is well worth a look and I look forward to an opportunity to ride my friend's new pride and joy when the opportunity arises.

General / Re: Commuting

I commute most days, St Albans into Central London. It's been hot recently but I'd rather be a bit warm on the bike than in a train. Despite taking the same route every day, each journey is different. I just enjoy being on my bike. Keep relative speeds low, eyes to the front and assume everyone's an idiot. :-)

Last time I use smilies here. It just cut off everything after the first sentence. I wrote a long post too... Boo! I start a new topic when I can spare the time. Just near Double R motorcycles in Leyton. I have to go in with my new rear shock and disc to get them fitted! TTFN.

Thanks Luke, already seen your sticky. I find it difficult to tell if it's the right one from most of the sellers' pics. I'll keep searching.

I need a new shock and am wondering about getting an R6 shock fitted. Do you know the year that the correct one was produced? Is there a unique part number or something? I'd like to source one here in the UK using part finder or eBay. I've got a 2003 FZS 1000.

Fzs 1000 for sure then wutang. I love the effortless power of mine in the low to mid range and then the transformation into a rocket ship from 7k+.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Modern Day Gen 1 Replacement?
« on: 21 May 2014, 10:01:00 pm »
With the passion that Fazer owners have for their bikes and the respect that Fazers have from the rest of the community, they must be considered a classic. Especially the Gen 1.  In that sense there is no replacement. Maybe I used the wrong word. Modern equivalent perhaps? We'd expect over a decade of development to result in a better bike in terms of performance and handling.  In real terms I suspect the BMW is cheaper than a brand new Fazer was in 2001 too.

« on: 21 May 2014, 01:13:51 pm »
I've been looking at reviews of the BMW S1000R recently and it struck me that it might just be the kind off all-rounder that could tick many of the same boxes as a Gen 1 FZS 1000. Unfortunately I don't think looks is one of them...

If you were in the market for a brand new bike with all the latest bells and whistles, what would you go for?  I'm not in the market by the way, but I thought it would be interesting to see what my fellow Foccers would consider worthy.

Thanks Falcon & nicko. Mine's a 1000 but my club buddy's wife probably has the 600. I'll tell him she needs an upgrade! ;-)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Headlights - have mine been modded?
« on: 07 May 2014, 02:25:04 am »
Hi All,

I recently bought my '03 model and last night I was asked what had been done to the headlights.  The enquiry is from a fellow at a local bike club I've just joined.

My bike has the foxeye style headlights, they both are on constantly and I just have a rocker switch for hi/low beams.  Apparently only one light should come on with the low beam and the other on high beam. That sounds bonkers to me. Also, they're a lot brighter than standard bulbs he reckons.

I hope someone here can set me straight. It all seems normal and what I'd expect to me.
I'm not really questioning my fellow biker from the club as his wife has a Fazer so his experience is from that. If anyone knows what kind of mod has been done, I'll pass the knowledge on so he can sort his better half's bike. They're doing some kind of charity run soon; 1000+ miles in 24hrs, so I guess half decent lights might be a bonus!

Can any of you Foccers shine some light on this one? Excuse the pun... ;-)

My fear about the pricey T30s would be getting a puncture and having them written off. I liked the BT21/23s for longevity. Only got my fzs1 a couple of weeks ago. It's got weird treads on the side. Might be Metzler? They do the job.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Fazer 1000 or FZ1 eternal dilemma
« on: 16 April 2014, 01:48:00 pm »
I bought a 2003 Fazer 1000 from a guy on eBay last week. I'm astonished by how much bike I've got for a couple of grand. There seems to be two modes with which you can ride it:

Gentleman Biker Mode: 3-6,000 rpm. Plenty of torque for effortless progress along Great Britain's highways. Engage 6th gear from 45mph upwards and there's still plenty of acceleration for civilised overtaking. 6,000 rpm = 90 mph in top gear, so keep a little under that and you get to keep your license too!

Hooligan Mode: 7-11,000 rpm. Keep the engine on the boil and you're really just telling Scottie which warp factor you desire. You'll hit over 70 mph in first gear in this mode. Lots of fun to be had in second gear launching off slip roads and suchlike.

I test rode a '09 FZ-1 which was also a lot of fun but I'm glad I went for the FZS.
