1) When you come to see it, check if the engine is cold. If it's not, that means the seller warmed it to have a good start from it. Better ask the seller to leave the bike cold.
2) Check the compression.
3) Check the rubber intakes between carbs and cylinders. There may me cracks.
4) Ask him to have ride. :) Try shifting the gear, see how the bike goes. If the bike twitches, that's a problem. :) If you experience collapses in acceleration, that's also a problem.
5) Check the electrics: lights, alarm (when all the light are flashing).
6) See if the speedometer and tahometer work properly.
7) You can also take the spark plugs out and see their condition.
8) See the front work - there might be oil leakage.
9) When the engine is warm, spit on the down pipes - from 1-st to 4-th. If saliva stays there, then touch the downpipe - it might be cold. :) If it's cold, then cylinder doesn't work.
10) That's all, I guess... :)

OK Tatastha. I will join in the banter with you mate. Here is a couple of my films  :D

Very lovely countryside and nice accurate roads!

Hey tatasha, is that Russia???, pretty gridlocked with traffic, there is a youtube video of a guy on an r1 absolutely flying through that type of traffic in Moscow, he is co pletely insane & probably dead now.

Do you have any footage of the countryside, like the vid from adeejaysdelight??, would be interesting to see.

There are a few video threads now but if you havent managed to find them yet then here is my latest & very squint creation.

Quite a few of us now have cameras & this year has been for practising....maybe next summer will see some nice creations. :)

Yeah, noggy, that's Moscow. The traffic jams is one of the greatest problem of this city. Still people buy more and more cars. I've got some other videos (and with countryside as well), but I have to edit them first. I'll post them here as soon as I do that. Maybe this month. :)

In Russia almost everyone has camera. There's almost in every car one. Bikers also use them a lot. Some yse chip Chinese stuff (like me:))), some buy GoPro and Contour. It's damn dangereous to ride and to drive here and in case of an accident the video record can be your best witness. Well, and many Russian people like to watch crash compilations on YouTube as a "How to survive on a road" tutorial.

FZS600 Fazer / VENHILL throttle cables
« on: 11 November 2013, 08:16:04 pm »
Has anyone tried the VENHILL's throttle cables? Here's the link: http://www.venhill.co.uk/Cables_-_Components_&_Kits/Universal_Cable_Kits/U01-4-150_UNIVERSAL_TWIN_THROTTLE_CABLE_KIT.html
I'll have to replace mine the day after tomorrow and I'm guessing what's better. I can either use cheap repair kit from LOUIS and purchase the original Yamaha cables from Japan in winter or buy this VENHILL stuff. What's better? VENHILL or Yamaha?

I've heard many stories how protection sliders caused more harm to the bike. Especially, when it slides down not very good surface. Most riders in Russia use such kin of protection:

I personally have these and  they are great. I know that previous owner fell twice on 50-60km/h on the corner (there was sand :] ) and once fell my girlfriend. Bike is OK, these Crazy Irons are also fine. :) But if you have a belly pan, then I'm not sure if you can install them.

The throttle was fully opened.

This is my first bike. I bought it last winter and purchased engine repair in our local service, They said I have to put new rings, so I agree. They put new rings and told me that compression was 9-9-9-9 and that's damn good for 18 years old bike. throughout the season (since May to today) I've added about 2 litres of oil. Well, of course, they could have mistaken by fitting rings incorrectly, but I prefer not to think about it.  :\ Hope valve clearance check will solve the problem. I'll do it myself.

Here in Russia it's very difficult to find 400cc bike in good condition, because it's considered to be a bike for a newbie (not by law, but by bikers themselves). People buy old 400cc from 90s for 1-2 years, ride like madmen and then change it 600cc/1000cc, not bothering too much about compression and so on. It's considered to be unwise to spend money on 400c. But I love my bike and I feel, that its 53hp with 180km/h is enough for me, so I've already spent more than a half from its start cost for different repair works. Well...  :rolleyes :rolleyes :rolleyes :)

I understand that there is nothing wrong with smoke in wet weather. I mean that the smoke was visible and if there had been any leakage, I would have seen it. :)

unfazed, compression is a strange thing. :) here in Moscow nights were cold in the beginning of October, it was -3C, so I could start my bike only by pushing it on the 2nd shift. then I decided to check compression on COLD engine. and it was 6-0-1-4. After two days the weather became a little warmer. I warmed up the engine and it was 9-8-8-8. Then I put 5ml of oil and it jumped to 11-10-8-14.

And yes, I'm planning to do valve clearance check in winter. I have 45000km already and I don't know if previous owners cheked it. I changed the rings this spring, but valves are unobserved.

hm, but they are hot. and when it wet outside, then there is a lot of white smoke from the exhaust. also, when i checked the compression two weeks ago, i put some oil in the cylinders and then i started the engine. there was a damn lot smoke from the exhaust and, I must say, from the point where the exhaust meets downpipe, but that place where downpipes meet cylinders - there was no leak there.

Thanks for replies, fellows.

Yes, it might be camchain, but the sound comes mainly from the right side of the engine and camchain is in the middle. Or it doesn't matter?

I've checked to temperature if the downpipes. The third one was just a little warm. Then I checked the spark plugs. The third one was all wet with oil and petrol, black as coil.

Then I installed the new spark plugs and the third cylinder switched on. Now the engine works better, the bikes goes better. The uplift that goes after 6000 came back.

Well, but the noise is surely still there. I made another video with new spark plugs. Here it is:

Hello. Noticed this metallic noise about two weeks ago. Seems that is comes from the right side of the engine. Is it valves?
