FZS600 Fazer / Re: Headrace Bearing change
« on: 31 May 2014, 05:07:10 pm »
Took the stem to the garage to get the lower race removed and a the replacement drifted on, managed to do the seats myself and rebuilt the brakes, passed the MoT this morning so all good. :)

Bike really feels different with new head and wheel bearings.

Three or four on ebay at the moment at around the £50 - £60 price. Not worth the risk at all.

I'll be doing the races and hopefully getting the the lower race off the stem, will be taking it to a garage to get the new race drifted on as I could quite easily balls it up. Will try and post some pics when I get round to it, got to wait for the rain to stop as it is an outside 'garage'.

Found this: http://www.garagenight.tv/ep-5-replacing-steering-head-bearings/

Other than a vice I've got everything else but the garage have offered to fit the lower bearing for £15 so looks like it will be going ahead. Ordered the all-balls taper-roller set from wemoto so looks like this weeks job.

FZS600 Fazer / Headrace Bearing change
« on: 24 May 2014, 01:56:20 pm »
Had the bike fail it's MoT on binding brakes (I have the rubber grease so no probs there) and a notchy headrace bearing. Having never done a headrace bearing change before is it something that can be done without bearing pullers and drifts or is it best left to the garage?

Thanks bbb

Re-assembled after cleaning the exhaust ports with wet and dry but still blowing.

Dis-assembled and ashamed as I am to admit it a smear of Fire Gum on the faces of the downpipes has stopped it blowing. Would seem the downpipe on cylinder 4 wasn't fully mating with the gasket.

Got the pipes off and have cleaned all the carbon blow-by off the new gaskets ready to re-assemble when it stops raining. Does it matter which way round the gaskets go in? They have a flat face and a slightly rounded face, does the flatter side go to the engine?

MoT tomorrow so a bit of a rush job.

Thanks

Replaced my rotten pipes with a set of motad Venoms and genuine Yamaha gaskets but cylinder 4 is popping at the head  :'( . Don't want to tighten them any more as I will snap a stud so it looks like all the pipes off and another set of gaskets but can I use a bit off assembly paste?

Spent ages soaking the nuts with Plus Gas so they came off fine then ran a tap through the nuts before I put them back on with plenty of copper grease. Feeling very pleased but the sod started leaking.

FZS600 Fazer / Rear Caliper Joining Seals
« on: 05 December 2013, 10:20:16 am »
Split and rebuilt my rear caliper yesterday using new piston seals, the joining seal had seen better days and wemoto don't a seal for the FZS but...

... I had four unused seals left over from when I rebuilt the brakes on my old GSXR 750 and they are the same size. If you need to replace the seal you can use a '99 GSXR 750's (six pot SRAD).

Could be useful.

When you say it had an 'extra' spring do you mean the top-out spring or something not in the pics. Just curious.

How clean is the back of the sprocket cover? mine would click/pop when I pulled the clutch lever, since I cleaned greased the actuator its a lot quieter and smoother.

I put a trx 850 alloy one on mine, £10 off ebay and a straight swap. Matches the swingarm as well.

Can I be bothered to strip and rebuild the rear caliper today???
Wanted to wait until I had some braided hoses but times are hard but given how seized it is...

Not one of my favorite jobs.

Really need to do the plugs, probably go for some iridium ones as they made a noticeable improvement to my old funduro, not cheap though.

Decided to do a bit on the bike today, balanced the carbs and changed/rad-flushed the coolant. Whilst the tank was off I thought I would have a quick look at the air filter as well. Result! its a K&N looked a bit yellow though so bought a re-charge kit and cleaned and re-oiled it, nice and pink again.

Will have to wait until tomorrow to see if it rides any better but the holed collector box probably doesn't help.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Clutch Pushrod - ok to pull out?
« on: 16 September 2013, 09:32:23 pm »
Fazersharp - you went to town cleaning that out, just left mine on the back to clean and then liberally greased up. Rode it to work today and it feels much smoother both clutch and gears. Also wondered if the shiny/rusty bit was a damper plate and tried to remove it but the heads chewed, I really need to invest in some JIS bits.

Sweet  :) , had visions of having to pull the clutch apart for what should have been a 30 minute job. Need to order the sprocket nut and tab washer and also replace the gasket. I seem to remember pulling the rod out of my SRAD a few years back without any problems but you never know.

Just have to re-assemble it in the dark now  :rolleyes .

FZS600 Fazer / Clutch Pushrod - ok to pull out?
« on: 14 September 2013, 08:05:17 pm »
Decided to check the sprocket nut and clean out the crud/relube from behind the sprocket cover. The nut is the old 9mm so will need to head to wemoto for the 12mm but the sprocket is solidly on and the threads look ok (phew), the amount of crud was as expected.

When I took the cover off the clutxh pushrod was stuck to the actuator and pulled out by a good 4cm, pushed it back in but it doesn't feel as if it is pushing on the clutch springs just a hard dead stop. Could something have fallen out internally? looking at the parts  fiche it isn't obvious if anything can.

Cheers.

FZS600 Fazer / Headlight Mod
« on: 08 September 2013, 11:42:08 am »

Did the headlight mod yesterday, very good write-up, bought the connectors from Autostar on ebay (cheap and next day delivery) included a waterproof connector that now sits behind the clocks in case of any MoT issues. Just need to adjust the beams (inner for vertical??) now.

Also ordered a 2.8mm female connector from autostar to replace the blue heatshrink part that should in theory enable me to use the blue connector under the tank.

Considering removing the metal cover over the dipped beam, has anyone had any issues at MoT time with the cover removed?

Cheers

« on: 07 September 2013, 10:33:43 am »
Looking to replace my rusty arm with an xj/fz/thundercat torque arm, have found one for an FJR1300 but can't find any info on it's dimensions. Does anybody know if its a straight fit? Not bothered  if it pushes the caliper round a bit just don't want something that won't fit.

Cheers.
