When I did the front of my engine I took everything off, oil cooler, filter, pipes out of the engine, everything then just masked up the frame. Seemed the best and easiest way and it worked well

No. Lugs are part of the main frame.

Oh what a pissa!
Could you not put it in gear and press brake lever to lock it up to get it apart?

I'm interested in that.
Fingers crossed!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: FZS 1000 Manual Cam chain tensioner
« on: 21 May 2017, 06:53:00 pm »
I have fitted one of theses to mine but I'm not convinced it's worth it now to be honest.
Yes it's foolproof and cannot break but the chances of having exactly the right tension on the chain at all times with manual is nil so the chain will probably wear more quickly and even snap if overtightened. You cannot win.

I have just fitted one of these and am also impressed.
Well worth doing.

I still have that bike and stick by my comments even though they maybe unpopular.
Parts provided by marksman were a wrong fit.

I took mine off, repainted and replaced the o rings and pins.
If left like that till the next service pins will probably break off.
That's what i did anyway.

All the problems described could be caused by incorrect valve timing. As the cylinder head has been off check and check again.
That's timing, not valve clearances.

Take screen off and check connections at the 2 headlight relays you will see at the bottom of the screen.
If I remember correctly ecu sends a negative down the white wire to the relay when the engine has fired to bring on lights. Check wiring diagram to confirm etc. Could be a duff relay but they are normally reliable..
Before this check LOW beam filaments on both bulbs......

Hi, hard to tell from the video. I fitted a manual adjuster to mine and found it fiddly to set up.
Knowing what I know now I wouldn't have bothered.
Just make sure you have it right obviously...

I got my powerpole connectors from vehicle wiring products. That name should show up online.

Note the link Falcon has posted above. That is the place to look.

Assembled!
Great description, thanks. Fiddly isn't it.....
I cannot see how one of these tensioner can let go to be honest, worth taking apart to check though!
Thanks anyway.

Hi Joey, I too made the decision to take my tensioner apart and cannot get it back together....
Can you explain how you get 5 turns on the spring?
How far should the threaded worm be screwed in before assembly?
Advise to anyone else...don't take it apart!!
Maybe manual for me , dunno if I can trust it now

If you follow the line back Yamaha suffered from the same problem on the xs1100. Second gear on them was very fragile on them and they didn't seem to correct it on the early 1000 boxes. Mine is 03 and seems ok but being a xs11 owner I never harsh change second...

Hi Aj, it came off easily. Undo screws and a tap with a rubber hammer and it was off.
Coolant pipes were tight but nothing a bit of pulling and leavering didn't solve.  AIS system was already off which made things easier.

Took the top off my gen 1for the first time to check valve clearances this weekend. All OK thank goodness. Some only just....but OK.
Only thing to note on the job is be careful all the detritus that lurks down the water coolant pipes holes doesn't fall into the engine when you lift the cam box up. I nearly had a long lost waher go down in my engine. Poor design Yamaha..
While apart I sprayed the cam box lid and removed and painted the corroded metal coolant stubs. A job well done I think.

A lot of work but worth it, looks great now.
I took the cam cover off mine yesterday for a valve check. That's a bit tatty, looking at your work I may give that the simoniz treatment.
Good work.

Check chain tension carefully. Sounds like its too tight.

Yep. 1.1s
I've had some scary moments on that. Little more than a high speed death trap.
Fazer is a different world, hence my concern about making it unstable by altering geometry.
Sounds like I shall enjoyvmy BMW shock!
Cheers.
